I want to love God with everything. I don't know what else my heart, soul, strength, and mind are occupied with, but I definitely know I'm not there. What is it to love God?
To love God with all your heart is to do. It is to have a love for and devotion to him. It is to want nothing else. Our heart compels us, motivates us, draws us, fuels us, and moves us. If we love God with all our heart then we are compelled to, motivated with, drawn toward, fueled by, and moved for him. Jesus loved his father so much that he sometimes spent the whole night with him. To love God with all our heart is to seek that substantial of a relationship with God. It is to chose him over all else.
To love God with all your soul is to have given him your life. It is to have trusted him with everything. It is to devote all parts of your inner being to him. Everything you feel, decide, believe, think, choose, want, dwell on, turn to, and pursue is a part of your soul. To love God with your soul is to give these things to him and allow him to use them in the way he sees fit. The soul is where we feel happy, where we are filled with joy and sorrow, where we have peace. If God has our soul then we will feel how he feels. If we give God our soul then our love for him will permeate through the rest of our lives, saturate our being, and unite us with God.
To love God with all your strength is to have a complete confidence and faith in him no matter what the situation. It is to put him above all else. It is to trust him with our bodies. We must realize that God has given us all of our physical capabilities and that everything we do should be for him and his glory. We love God by living for him. We must give him all we have and expect him to work with us. Me must stand up for him in every situation, no matter what the consequences. We are then loving him with all we have.
To love God will all your mind is to give your intelligence to him for his use. It is to occupy your thoughts with good things--things of heaven--and to think and reason about the aspects of God. Our minds are an amazing gift from God and he wants us to use them to find truth--to find him. In order to love God we must know him, and we can do this by using our mind through communicating with him, reading the scriptures, and thinking about how those tools lead us to the truth of God. We must use our minds to know Jesus. We must use our minds to resolve the questions God wants us to resolve. To love God with our minds is to think about him.
After we love God, we must both love our neighbor and love our self. We are not to figure out how much we love our self and love our neighbor that much; we are to both love our self and love our neighbor as much as God loves our self and our neighbor. We must love God first because to love God is to understand him, and If we understand God then we understand love. We are such a unique creation of God. He literally put us together to be who we are. He was involved in every detail of the process. He then died for us. That is how much he loves us! He also intricately created and died for our neighbor, no matter who they are or what they believe. We must love ourselves and our neighbor with this kind of love.
I want to do all these things. I strive to do all these things. Lord, help me to do all these things!
