The band has a film crew following them around at the moment for a fly-on-the-wall documentary called 3 Days with Third Day and so our devotions last night were done with the camera on us. I chose to focus on 2 verses from Ephesians: Eph. 1:17 I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. Eph. 3:20 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, Ephesus was a prosperous city of learning, full of self-confident people. Nevertheless, there was much superstition there as well. 'An Ephesian Letter' was a type of spell that you could buy in Ephesus to bring you good luck. The Ephesians had no concept of gods who would want to do you good or even be known by you-unless you were the Emperor. Paul had established a church in Ephesus and left Timothy in charge. Paul's letter to the church explains the positive consequences of the Spirit of God being in you, and of us being in the Spirit. In the early part of the letter, Paul talks through the prayers that he has for the Ephesian believers and in 1.17 he prays that they will have sophia- Godly wisdom ( Christ was often called the Wisdom of God) and apokalypsis-insight and discernment, not just to know information but to understand it's relevance as well. In 3.20 Paul prays that the Ephesians would have more from God- the word hyper is used meaning above, beyond, more than. Paul explains that God has more in store for the Ephesians than they could possibly dream of. So we spent our devotional time discussing what 'more' we yearned for from God for Third Day, and in what areas we desired greater wisdom and revelation. It was one of those discussions and prayer times that I believe we will look back upon in the forthcoming months and realize it's full significance.
