Ahh, the Strawberry Festival. If you like strawberries, this is the closest thing to heaven. It's a fair-type atmosphere with a big midway with rides and shows and exhibits. But the main attraction is the strawberries. They have strawberries prepared any way you want them. We played here about 5 years ago and had a great time. I loved it so much that my wife and I came down a couple years and saw Kenny Rogers perform. Today was her birthday, so this time I brought the whole family.
One of the most common questions I get when I tell people what I do is "How do you get your equipment to the show?" 98% of the time, we have a normal tour show. On a normal "tour" show, we have all of our drums and guitars and amps in a big truck. Because we're in Florida today and then back on tour tomorrow, today wasn't a normal tour show - it's was we call a "fly" show. We bring our guitars and cymbals, but the big things like drums and guitar amps are rented onsite. It makes for a, shall we say, "different" experience. Kind of like Forrest Gump - you never know what you're going to get. Tonight it ended up being great.
But first, the Strawberry Festival. The Oak Ridge Boys played this afternoon, and they're as great as ever. We hung out with a few of those guys backstage. They're really encouraging. I really hope we can continue to encourage other artists like that when we've been around as long as they have. After their set, I walked around the festival with my family. We tried the famous make your own strawberry shortcake, as well as a "shortcake" made out of homemade doughnuts. I gotta say, the doughnut version might have been a little better.
Right before our set, we did a meet and greet. We were presented with a huge box of fresh strawberries. Let me tell you - if you've never had truly fresh strawberries before, you haven't lived a day in your life. I ate more of them than I care to admit, but man they were good.
Speaking of good, we had a good time performing tonight. It was a different crowd than those we've encountered lately on tour. They seemed to be a little more into the worship stuff, which is fine because we did quite a bit of it. We did a longer set tonight so were able to incorporate songs like Trust in Jesus and Sing a Song that we haven't done much lately. It was a blast.
Now we're faced with a true dilemma. Do we try to take these strawberries with us, or do we just eat them now? I vote we eat them...
