Tonight we played at a fair. And it wasn't fair. It was awesome. Read on, my friend.
We arrived in Sacramento late this morning at the California State Fair. The activity of choice today was walking around and looking at the sights. They had a superhero exhibit that was pretty cool. Seeing's how we were at a fair, I took advantage of the opportunity to seek out some good fair food. I ended up getting pizza and it was pretty great. We had an extended soundcheck today to get prepared for an extra special surprise. More on that in a bit…
After soundcheck, Mac and I visited the good folks at the FISH radio station in Sacramento. We spent time on the air with Max, talking about the new record and single. We even got asked about Gomers. Speaking of Gomers, we also met several fans and contest winners at the station. While at the station we ran into a new band called Love & the Outcome. Thanks to the Fish for having us - we had a great time.
Upon arriving back at the venue, we did a short meet and greet with some of the fair folks. Then it was time to bring the rock to California. It's funny how I'll think we haven't played somewhere before and then the most random detail will remind me of a previous show in the same place. This time it was seeing that the stage was surrounded by water. It was like a moat. After asking around, I realized that we played the California Fair back in '07. So it was good to be back.
OK, now for the surprise I've been talking about. Peter Furler has been out with us for the last several days, and today was supposed to be an off day for him. We decided to join forces for something really special tonight. We invited him onstage with us. In addition to "Keep on Rockin in the Free World" that we've done for a couple of shows now, we added a couple of songs he made famous with Newsboys. We did "He Reigns" as well as "I Am Free". It was unbelievable how well it went over with the crowd, not to mention that it was a huge honor to share the stage with one of our musical heroes and mentors. A truly special night.
It was a great night. Beautiful weather, and even more beautiful people. It's a night we won't soon forget!
