The town of Nome is actually pretty pissed about this whole thing. The community had a number of people reported missing with about 80% of those people accounted for (the usual - a homicide, drunk drivers under the water, etc.). They're pissed because they feel like the movie has exploited these tragedies and made them into lies for money. When it says "based off of true events", it means they can grab any event that took place and branch it out into something completely different. For example, I can watch a red car drive accross the lot. I can then make up this story about how a red car drove across the lot, began hovering over the ground, then took off into outerspace while melting the faces off of schoolchildren with it's propulsion system. I can tell you that it was based off of true events because a red car did in fact drive across the lot, but that's where it stops.
I believe that UFO's are actually demons in another who appear as UFO's or aliens and I have seen the trailer for this movie and I am all the more convinced.
