Am I missing something here? Why is our country voting on this? How much $ have we spent preparing and debating this? Not to sound uncaring but what difference does it make to Americans in 2007 if genocide was committed against another country circa WWI? Are we planning war against Turkey?
Geez!

Still, many Armenians are still suffering the effects of the mass genocide, and it could offer closure for them if a major nation such as the U.S. recognized their plight. The band System of a Down is consisted of Armenians and some of their songs involve the genocide committed against their people, so it still matters to them, just like the Holocaust still matters to the Jews.
Personally, I think rejecting this proposal is kind of a heartless and selfish gesture by our president, and while I tend to agree with Bush on most things, I'm starting to wonder if he ever really was what he proclaimed himself to be.

I don't have time to read the artcile....when did these atrocities happen?
You guys are aware of the post I made about Indonesia and Chile? Those were declassified docuemtns availabel on the NSA website about our secret involvment with a doctator in indonesia and again in Chile. In Tibor, it went on for nearly 30 years with a total balckout in the US media...
We've been at this for quite a while....

WE didn't do it...TURKEY did it. Read the article. Back in WW1 we fought AGAINST Turkey (back then, the Ottoman Empire).

If it was genocide, then it's important that the world classifies it as such, it creates an atmosphere where people can have closure and healing... if young Armenians are singing about it still then the pain is still there in the culture - in the Bible there are times when people are called to confess and repent from the sins of their forefathers - same kind of thing I think...

I guess I just don't understand why the UN isn't the body that needs to classify it as such. Are we standing alone on this? Have other countries taken the same steps? I'm not being sarcastic (for a change! lol). I really don't understand how this works.

This appears to be poltical...
Turkey has complained that our relationship would be strained if its passed....and Turkey is a key alley in Iraq....we use their border and have a base there...i think.
So, it comes back to politics i guess....

Politics, it is. Just another attempt to sabotage the situation in Iraq by alienating an ally.

I just read that Turkey is recalling it's Ambassador to the US over this bill.

I do understand why Bush doesn't want to and I feel his point is valid. What I don't understand is why the US would even feel it was up to us to make this statement. That would seem to me to be the responsibility of the UN or Armenia. For example, Jews can easily say that Hitler's persecution of the Jews was genicide. They don't need ME to say if FOR them. They said it... it's true... the end.

Over this? It's sad that we have to deal with people like this because of a questionable war.

Yes and that is precisely why "some" in congress are bringing this up now... to try and hurt our efforts in Iraq. This type of resolution about the same even has been passed twice in the last 40 years already. It is pointless to bring it up again unless you see it as a chance to hurt US/Turkey relations in order to disrupt our ability to succeed in Iraq.
