It's these types of things that make me question why I'm even considering voting for Obama. I'm glad he talked to his kids about it, but it's not the school's right to force things like this on impressionable children and force the parents to have to have this discussion way before they probably should. Either way, even if you have the discussion, kids in 2nd grade are just too impressionable and there's no reason this book should even be read to a 2nd grade class.

Obama in his e-mail to me said he doesn't support same-sex marriage, because he believes the definition of "marriage" is a man and a woman, but that he supports civil unions. I have some problems with that, but I do believe he's a man of faith, which makes me question how he can support something like this for 2nd graders...although he never really said he supported...he just kind of side-stepped it.

The pictures in the book are disgusting...I almost threw up when I saw them. There's no need for this...there's no educational value in this, obviously no moral value in this, and there's just no point for it to be taught except to further the gay agenda.

Clemson, you don't really think he actually emailed you do you?

Yeah, this crap really bugs me about teaching kids about gays. Why don't we give them sex ed at age 8 as well?

Its something that should be taught as a later age....like age 18...

Kids should not be subject to ANY sexual thoughts or ideas at all until they're old enough to understand it....and I don't really know/feel its the right of the state to educate kids on it.

Its a very touchy subject...

I think children need to know as much as they need to know - for different kids and different situations it's different ages - our boys all know about transvestites, but they need to here as it's very acceptable and they've all seen men turning into women as part of daily life - our checkout operator at the supermarket did it over a period of a year!

But I also believe it is the job of the parents to do this - schools use the excuse that many parents don't teach their kids - well that is the choice of the parents - I think schools need to let parents know if things like this are being taught to their kids so the parents can with draw their children if they wish to...

As a parent in a non-traditional household, I think it's important that children know different types of families exist. That being said, I feel sex ed should not be taught before junior high (age 11 or 12). I think it's important for schools to educate children, rather than leave it totally up to the parents, however I think parents should have discussions with children shortly before the school does.

When I was teaching in NZ, we sent out letters to parents and parents were invited to come to meetings to find out what the children would be taught - we especially did this when we did a unit on keeping safe which talked about safe touching and bad touching - I personally didn't like this unit as it didn't really offer any solutions - can't really without God... with the sex education I think it is vital that the parents know what is being taught in the classroom - if sexual options are being taught then I would demand that the option of abstaining be taught as well, which I guess it would NOT be...

Grade two kids being taught this stuff - no way - they don't need to know things like that at that age... if they ask you what sex is when they're that age it's often because they've read it on a form and just want to know what it means by sex... eg male or female...

As a teacher, how did you handle when a child comes from a non-traditional family. How about if a child is being raised by a single parent, grandparents, same-sex parents, etc. When it came to class events, did kids ask why a child had different parents? How did you expain it?
