View Full Version : Help! My compact flash card is DEAD, Jim!

I'm thinking I probably just wore it out, since I've been using the same 1gb card in my PDA since I bought that PDA about three years ago, and have been using it fairly regularly to store my mp3s to play back at my desk for a while now.

It apparently went kablooey this afternoon. Now the PDA won't recognize it (it tells me it now needs to be formatted, and when I tell it to go ahead, it accepts my "okay" tap, but then doesn't do it), my USB plug in card reader on my PC doesn't see it, and as a last resort, I stuck it in my digital camera to at least try to format it there to allow me to reformat it on my PC afterwards, and the camera won't do anything with it either.

Any way to get it back? All I had on it was music, which is all stored on my PC and is recoverable, so if I need to reformat it, no problem there, but I can't figure out how to get anything to read it to be able to reformat it.

Or do I need to officially declare 11:30pm the official time o' death and figure I have to buy a new one at this point?

Any helpful advice would be welcome, since I've never had a CF card die on me before. *sob!* It looks just like it did when it was alive! :P

Thanks.

I've had several that Ritz declared officially dead. I hate to say it, but yours has probably met it's demise, too. :(

Thanks for the confirmation, Miz Barb. I sort of figured as much. :( But considering that it has been running as storage for the mp3 player software on my PDA for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week for quite a while now, I'm thinking I got a lot of mileage out of it before it bit the dust.

What I'll probably do is use the 1GB card from my camera to replace the deceased, and buy a new 2GB card for the Nikon. I've been using that one for a few years too, and would really hate to have that one go out in the middle of a concert sometime.

In the meantime, I do have another 512mb CF card that I'm loading back up with music right now, I just squeezed 10 3D cds on there before I ran out of space, that should keep me happy and singing along at work until I get another CF card in here.

Not too bad considering I'm the furthest thing from a trekkie that there could possibly be. :P I've seen all of one episode (but seen that one 3 times), and none of the spin offs or movies. But I do quote that one line a lot. That one and "Beam me up, Scotty, this planet sucks." LOL.

My husband is the trekkie. It's like comedy to me. We are always making those references in our house. William Shatner is a hoot!!!:)
