I'm running into the same thing with "Dexter" on Showtime. We just finished season 1 on DVD, and season 2 starts on Sunday, so we're trying to wrangle my sister into recording it with her DVR and then transfer it to DVD for me so we don't have to wait until NEXT year to see the next season.
Let me see what I can do. We're taping it anyway (we'll be lucky if we don't burn out a few VCRs this week; with all the new shows on, we took a yellow highlighter to the schedule to make sure we don't miss anything. We've got several nights this week that all three VCRs will be going at once. )
In any case, we're taping the entire NBC lineup tonight, along with some other stuff, so if you don't mind analog cable transfered from VHS tape, recorded on LP or EP (sorry, no HD Tivo or anything here! :o ), I think I can transfer the Heroes eps to DVD and maybe send them out every couple of weeks or so...

Well I know that nbc puts them up on the website the next day to watch and iTunes usually has them within a couple of days for 1.99 or so, at least here in the states. There are sites that will let you browse anomalously on the web so if nbc is blocking other countries that are trying to watch the episode before the series airs there, you should have a way around it.
BTW- Can't wait for tonight! Lets hope this season is just as good as season 1.

Hey,
Sorry, I got a phone call, been occupied for a moment. As I write this, I am videotaping episode 1 of Season 2 of Heros. I am going to see about taping the rest of them and getting them converted to DVD for you. But I can't promise anything. I don't have one of the converters, but I do have a friend who does. I will see what I can do Jason. If I can get this show on DVD for you, I will. I will let you know more soon. I will PM you or something.
The same goes for you as well Emily. If things don't work out for Karen to do this for you, and I can get Heros on DVD, I will ship it out to you and Jason. I will keep you guys posted. Really hope I can do this for my Gomer buds.
Blessings,
Mary

Mary, if your connection doesn't pan out, remember this is what I DO for a living. :) (Actually I'm sitting here duping Episode 1 behind me as I type this. JVC VCR in the middle of the shelf to the Panasonic DVD burner on the bottom shelf. 22 minutes left on the dupe. I LOVE my job! :P )
87922
It would be a piece of cake to dupe off one more DVD for Jason and mail it when I do Emily's.
I figure a DVD holds two hours generally, so unless y'all are in a HUGE rush for it, I'll wait until I get episode two, then finalize it and send it out. Or if you can wait a little longer, I can flex record it to get 4 hours and send it out once a month (or even 6 hours and send it every month and a half)... What do you think?
And haven't seen it yet, I just taped the whole night, and watched Prison Break and that new comedy Big Bang Theory instead. Funny stuff.

We are in no hurry Karen, so the more you can fit on a DVD the better - that's just us though!
That's some set up you've got there girlie!!
The Unknown Gomer
09-25-2007, 12:43 PM
Isn't that quite the set up? When I came in for my interview a few years ago, I walked in, saw that rack, and mentally started jumping up and down thinking "I SO have to work here!"
14 VCRs (plus one that will convert to PAL), 3 DVD burners, two 8mm handi-cams, the DSR-11 (which handles mini-DV and DV-CAM tapes), and a partridge in a pear tree. :D
And what's funny is with all this great equipment, look what we're using as a monitor stand. LOL.

I meant to say Karen if there are any British comedy things you'd like me to do for you - you'll have to give me a shout. Some of the BBC drama's are also worth a watch.
Yeah I had to watch the episode online today since I was working last night.

:D Hey Emily,
It looks like Karen has you covered!!! It would take me a whole lot longer to get this done, (since I have to get my friend to do the transferring from VHS to DVD), so I guess the best way to go is to let Karen do this for you. I hope that the thought counts and that you still love me anyway!! :D So just disregard the e-mail I sent to you, or at least the part about me taping Heros for you!!
Same for you Jason. I was going to try, but seems that Karen is the queen of Video-technical-electrical equipment. I am not even a novice compared to her!!!!!!! I really wanted to do this for you and Emily, but Karen will be able to get them to you much faster and at a better quality I am sure. Thanks so much Karen for doing this for them. And don't forget, I will be sending you a DVD of the 3 hours of Third Day programming that aired on GMC about 2 weeks ago. My life is finally calming down now that vacation is over and I think my friend and I will get the DVD made this weekend. I will keep you posted. Gonna send you a copy too Emily!!!!!!!! Do you want one too Jason?? At least I can do something for you???? :D :D

Are you good with 4-6 episodes on a single DVD, Jason? Then I can do a single 4-6 episode DVD off the VHS and just do a straight dupe, one for Em and one for you, then run them down to the post office (there's one within walking distance from work) at the same time.
...I'd prefer to watch the 'Karen version' anyway ;)!
Just wait, you've not gotten my bill yet for this! :P
(And yeah, the monitor stand in the pic IS an old camcorder case! LOL. We don't skimp much on equipment that will result in better end product [they just bought three HD camcorders that make me absolutely drool] but MacGyver cheap fixes for other stuff where we can. You'd be amazed at what Bob can rig up with a roll of gaffer tape and a few paperclips. ;) )
Mary, did I read right, you HAVE gotten your hands on a tape of the GMC 3D stuff? Woot! Just give a holler and let me know how much it is to dupe and ship out a copy to me and we'll work out the $ details. Times like these I really wish I had digital cable. Between this and the TBN Glory Revealed thing (and then Dexter on Showtime), that's three things in just a couple of months that I've not had access to here at the house. Waah. Someday we'll get it. (Probably when the TV goes on the fritz and we end up getting an HD set to replace it, we'll probably pick up the HD digital programming as well...)

Yes ma'am!!! I do have in my hands a VHS copy of the 3 hours of back to back Third Day shows from Gospel Music Channel. My friend with the VHS to DVD converter has said we will try to get the tape transferred to DVD this weekend. Once I have the DVD copies, I will get your address, as well as Em's and Jason's and I will get them in the mail ASAP!!! Don't want to keep my Gomer Buds waiting!!
I also wish I had the chance to see Glory Revealed on TBN. But no such luck. When the Glory Revealed CD first came out, I heard that there were plans to release a DVD of one of the live concerts, but I have not heard anything else about it. I do hope the rumor is true though. Have to wait and see!!

The Glory Revealed thing should be available in the TBN video archives (http://www.tbn.org/index.php/2/37.html) on their website within a couple of days after it airs. It looks like they're pretty quick at getting them online, the one from yesterday's PTL show is already online.
Hopefully I'll remember to tune in to the website at the time it actually airs - 7 pm Pacific I think it was, so 10pm ET, so I can at least get an idea of what part of the show it's on and see if I can't split just that part off from the rest of it after I download it from the archive, assuming it'll download okay.

I didn't see it yet, so got the timer on and the screen switched to blue screen so I don't get tempted to cheat and watch it before I get home tonight...
Two more eps after this one to fill the disc and I'll dupe the extra copy and get it mailed out to Em and Jason...
Yay. I just love it when a plan comes together... :)

And it only took three weeks, and naturally, it's the first week out of the three that they're not airing it a second time on Saturday night, that I screwed up the recording tonight. TWICE.
My perfect system got all fouled up tonight when I had to record Prison Break (which we usually watch) for my mom, who's not home, instead of the block of three NBC shows. Figured I'd just stick Heroes on after Prison Break, forgetting that I'd already stuck Prison Break on the same tape as Shark from last night. So it recorded about the first 5 minutes of Heroes before it shut off and started auto rewinding.
Figured out immediately what had happened, so threw in another tape real quick, hit the record button, and sat down to watch Big Bang Theory on the other VCR. No sooner than I finished watching that that I notice that the top VCR is NOT recording anything. Apparently the REC button on the front of the unit is flaky.
So at this point, we've got the first 5 minutes and the last half hour of Episode 3 of Heroes tonight. And I'm irked because I haven't seen it EITHER. GRRRRR!
88121
Sorry guys! Trying to record 3 things and watch a fourth, and in a completely different VCR configuration than has worked just fine the last two weeks, well, it was too much for my wee brain to handle tonight.
But I'm a computer nerd/AV geek, so I should be able to fix this. ;)

Completely understandable, Karen. No worries.
I wonder how Emily will feel about an American actor doing a Brit accent this season?
EmmoGomer
10-09-2007, 04:17 AM
Hey don't worry about it Karen. These things happen - the fact you're doing it at all is above and beyond the call of duty!
It was Joel's birthday at the begining of September (as you probably know ;)). The BBC has a kids channel where you can send a card to be read out by the presenter. We made a fab card with a pic of Joel and everything. Off it went.
On Joel's Birthday I set the DVD to record all the slots that his card may appear on. We sat down to watch (at this point i'm feeling really smug as it's recording nicely). Lo and behold Joel's card appears.......... just as Mark announces that it's not recording !!! We then spend the whole time it's on the tv being read out scrabbling around trying to record what we can - which was nothing!
We were all sooooooooooo gutted.
Anyway. Over the weekend a freind who I've not heard from for ages (or seen in 16 years), send me a text asking if Joel's birthday card was on tv as she'd recorded a block of tv for her little boy to watch. Yes, YES, YES!!! She's now copying it for us so we will have a copy. These things often have a way of sorting themselves out. You know I think you're a star Karen. Seriously, don't worry!
Which American's doing an English accent Jason?
I just wish they'd employ an English actor - they need jobs too!
It's great to see Christopher Eccleston keeping his Manchester accent during series one - can you guys understand what he's saying though ;)?
We've just started watching 'The Riches'. Have you seen that? That's the other way 'round. Eddie Izzard and Minnie Driver doing American accents. Eddie's it a bit dodgy!
The Unknown Gomer
10-10-2007, 10:15 AM
Thanks for being so good about it. But so much stuff happens in a single episode of that show, I hate to miss ANY of it, and it's even worse when I mess up on something that I'm trying to record for someone else, that really drives me crazy.
However, it turns out it wasn't just MY goof. Even had I not botched it up the first time, I still wouldn't have gotten it; our ancient VCR has apparently finally broken down. I tried recording "Damages" for Mom last night, and even using the remote to start it recording, it would record about 5 seconds and then the entire unit would just shut down. I tried several times, with two different tapes with no luck. So it looks like we're going to be in the market for a new VCR that we'll need to have hooked up by next Monday night which is the next time we'll need three vcrs going at once.
They still make those oh so low-tech VCRs, don't they? ;) I'd like to get one that's a VCR/dvd burner combo, if they don't cost too much, so I can do some of this stuff at home. (And even better, go right from TV to DVD without the VCR middleman, so the quality of the next disc will be MUCH better.)
Anyway, got some good news thought. My favorite bittorrent site who shall remain nameless had no less than about 8 different versions of Monday's episode uploaded to the site by the time I got home yesterday. I had one downloaded before I went to bed last night. They recorded it from their HD signal, so it'll probably have the best picture of any of the episodes I've recorded so far. Maybe I should have technical breakdowns more often, we'll end up with a better quality end result. LOL.
The trick will be to get it from the DVD I burned of it this morning (which will not play on any of the Panasonic DVD players that we have here or the Panasonic player at home, but WILL play on my cheesy cheap trendy pink plaid :o DVD player that I got at Target many years ago. Go figure) onto the DVD that I've already started that has the first two episodes on it. But I've got a plan for that already in the works, so will hopefully have it added to the disc in plenty of time to add episode 4 next week.
Muahahaha! I just love it when a plan (eventually) comes together! :D
EDIT: All done. "Missing episode" crisis averted. *whew!* :D Just finished duping the HD internet version of Episode 3 onto the back of Episodes 1 & 2. Should just be able to squeeze next week's episode on there if I cut the commercials.
And then it'll be off to the post office.

[Your avatar is glaring at me! ;) ]
Not TOO stressed about it, I just hate to let technology win, you know? :) And up until about 1:30 last night, technology was pretty much kicking my butt. But I got it eventually.
The hardest part was trying to figure out the weird video format that the video file turned out to be last night, I've never dealt with MKV files before. But just had to convert that to AVI and then from AVI into DVD format, and voila! Ended up with a disc that would only play back on the cheap DVD player. Now I know why the wait time for the one I got was so short, everyone ELSE going for the other EASIER file formats. LOL.
But from there it was just a couple of mouse clicks on the PC here at work to reburn onto a disc that would play in ALL players, and from there onto the Heroes disc.
Piece of cake.
Thank you for shopping Techno-weenies R Us. :D

I'll squeeze episode four on there, get it finalized, and get the disc off in the mail next week for you and Jason (assuming his PC is back up to snuff by then  ), so you won't have long to wait before you can get started on the first four eps. :)
And just got done ordering the replacement deck for the VCR that quit last night. Turns out doing a search for "VCR" at the various electronic places turns up nothing but DVD/VCR combo units now. I guess they don't make just plain ole VCRs anymore? Really breaks my heart ;) since we should be picking up a DVD Burner/VCR (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8237008&st=vcr&lp=9&type=product&cp=1&id=1168043636161)combo from Best Buy tomorrow night. Was going to go with the real cheapie (but it had really good user ratings) but then for about $20 more, we got some additional wiggle room for future expansion to HD and additional disc type capability, including DVD-RAM.
So it looks like duping over Heroes just got easier. Gotta finish the one out on the same burner I started it on, but starting the new disc with episode 5, we should be able to do everything much easier right at home. Yay! :D

Except that I got an email back from them after I ordered that said that - even though the website said it was available at the store - I couldn't pick it up at that one. It's on sale and apparently was selling fast, the only place that had it by then was the store in Durham.
So I turned around and ordered it the same way - online for instore pickup, for the same price - at Circuit City, which is right across the street from Best Buy (talk about the ultimate neener neener neener to BB, huh! :D ).
However... was reading the manual for it off the Samsung site, and unless you have a cable box of some sort, you can't use this one because it doesn't come with a tuner. What VCR doesn't come with a tuner built in, even if it IS a VCR/DVD combo?!? I guess they figure a lot of people have digital cable or stuff that requires some sort of tuner already, so they eliminated it to make the units cheaper.
We, alas, don't have a cable box. So I got on the circuit city website this morning and canceled the order.
Now we just have to figure out if we want to pay more than we'd planned to to get the security of a unit that has the old familiar VCR in addition to the DVD burner and a tuner, or if we're going to skip the VCR and just go with a burner with a tuner to cut back on the cost a little. The VCR part of it really wouldn't be necessary, since we have one that works right below it that we could dupe from; it would just be a little strange to keep re-recording regular TV over DVD-RWs instead of VCR tapes half the time.
Sheesh. Whoda thunk that the simple act of replacing a dead vcr would be made so complicated by the fact that new vcrs are all but extinct.
The saga continues... ;)

We opted to spend the extra bucks for the security and convenience of the burner/vcr combo last night. It ran us another $80 to get one with a VCR AND a tuner *shakes head, still floored that they sell things without tuners*, but it just made more sense to have that extra VCR so we could continue to be able to playback the tapes from it on either vcr.
Glad I researched it online. They had the unit (http://www2.panasonic.com/consumer-electronics/shop/Video/DVD-Recorders-Players/DVD-Recorders/model.DMR-EZ47VK_11002_700000000000 0005702) in the store, but it wasn't reflecting the sale price that had been on the website, but they gave it to me for the internet price. Good thing, it was about $40-$50 more in the store than it was online.
So now it's home, but still in the box. Hopefully I'll get it pulled out and hooked up on Sunday (and hopefully have everything back together and functioning by 4pm - Doug's got a football game he wants to see then; it would be tragic if I were still fighting with getting everything working by then! ). If so, I'll try recording Heroes right to DVD on Monday and if it all works, I'll go ahead and finalize the first disc with just the three episodes on it and get that out to you and Jason next week.

Yay! Hookup was a piece of cake yesterday. Just yank the coax TimeWarner cables from the back of the old unit, plug them into their matching input/output jacks in the new unit, plug it in, run set up and we were off and running.
And we've got more channels than we had before!  I guess they're running the regular network HD channels right along side their standard network channel equivalent through the main cable line, so all of a sudden, since we've got that digital tuner in the burner/vcr unit, we're getting something like 3 and 4 each of PBS, CBS, ABC, and NBC. The regular AND the HD wide screen letterboxed versions, plus some of the alternate networks from different parts of the viewing area. PLUS the 24 hour weather channels of each of the main networks. :) No premium channels or anything, but still kind of a nice unexpected bonus. Woot!
I'll try to run Heroes right to the DVD side tonight and see how it goes. If it goes according to plan, I'll finalize the first three episodes that I did the other way and get them duped tomorrow. :)

ARRRGH! It didn't go according to plan. *bangs head into wall again*.
Oh, the burner works GREAT, it recorded a very nice hour of programming on the DVD at 9pm last night. Gave it its own little chapter stop, with a very nice thumbnail picture from the show it recorded.
On the wrong network! No fault of the burner, just a little miscommunication between myself and the instruction manual. Thought the tuner for the burner worked independently of the tuner for the VCR, so ended up picking up two hours of programming on the same channel that I'd recorded to from 8:30 to 9:00 on the VCR side and NOT the channel I thought I'd set for Heroes earlier in the evening on the DVD side.
Oy. We've got three Panasonic burners at work that are a piece of cake to operate, but throw a VCR into the mix and it's a WHOLE different ball game. :o
The GOOD news is that given that it WAS my first attempt at recording something with the new unit, I actually recorded Heroes on the old VCR as well as a back up, just in case. So I didn't actually lose the show this week (and actually used the VCR to DVD copy function tonight for the first time to go ahead and get it dubbed over to the new disc that y'all will get NEXT month.). Alas, I didn't get Journeyman which normally records after Heroes at 10, since it was still set to CBS instead for that too. Wah. Oh well.
In any case, now that I've officially started Disc 2, I'll go ahead and finalize and dupe Disc 1 tomorrow. So since Jason beat me to it and already PMed me about getting HIS address, Emily, if you could just PM me yours, I should be able to get the first three episodes out to you and Jason this week. Yay!

Recorded Episode 5 direct to DVD last night. And I even did it on the correct channel this time too! Yes, I can be taught! :P
The fact that I hooked up the remote control A/B switch on Sunday made things MUCH easier, no more arm strain from reaching around blindly behind the telly to flip from A (lower VCR) to B (new DVD burner/VCR) to see what I'm recording. I just press the matching button on the remote from the comfort of the couch and voila! I can actually see what I'm recording to DVD. Easy remote, too, it's got a whole two buttons on it: A & B. Even I don't think I could botch THAT up! :D
The current DVD will fit one more episode on it next Monday, so episodes 4, 5, and 6 should be mailing out not long afterwards.

I'm apologizing in advance for you having to crank up the volume on Ep 3 though. That was the internet episode, and even after I bumped up the volume 200% and then bumping THAT up another 200% before I reburned it, Jason says it IS still pretty low. (How's that lip-reading going, Jason? You should be an ole pro at it by now! ;) )
Internet downloads are "like a box of chocolates...you never know what you're gonna get." :P Very handy though sometimes. I forgot to tape half the show Men in Trees Friday night, I downloaded it, burned it to DVD, and we were watching it before the weekend was over. Commercial free to boot, since whoever captured it was thoughtful enough to cut the commercials. Course now I'm stuck with a DVD I'm never going to watch again, but I hear they make GREAT coasters.

WHAT?!!! It really happened? Noah's really dead? Spectacular death scene though, don't you think? Of course, there's always Claire's blood. ;)
I've enjoyed watching Hiro grow up. :)

I have not watched the show from the beginning, but when I heard Kristen Bell (still mourning the Veronica Mars cancellation) was coming on this season I have started watching. I'm still lost. Not sure I'll ever catch up!!! But boy is Peter cute. That's enough of the swooning. Just thought I'd mention it.

We have just finished watching this season. It was SOOOOOOOOOO fantastic (thanks Karen :D) - I really hope that Nathan is not dead. He is a lovely character now that's he's been humbled a bit, not to mentioned he looks mighty fine now he's grown his hair a bit too ;).
So what's going to happen next season?? What's Sylar going to do?? Will Adam escape from his grave......... so many questions!!
I can't wait!!! Please PLEASE PLEASE can you encourage your writers to go back to work!!!

It MADE it? Finally? MAN, but the post office really does get overloaded over the holidays. Did everything get there in one piece? (I think you should have gotten 4 DVDs total? It's been so long I don't remember what I sent you! :o )
And you should have one more coming. A little late to watch NOW, but at least you'll have it for next Christmas. :)

Okay die-hards, which character was "Zack"? Was he a boyfriend of Claire's?
The guy who played him just turned up in the new Terminator series, and it says he was in Heroes, and I'm just trying to place him. :o

I knew someone would know. :) So he was the guy that videotaped her falling/jumping off that structure way back at the beginning of season one then. I THOUGHT that he was probably Claire related, but wasn't sure which one.
Now it's up to him to stay alive to save the human race from Cyberdyne Systems machines. Not that it really matters, I guess, based on what happens at the end of T3! :P

How right you are! I could hear Claire say his name in my head and immediately thought of this season.
I forgot about the first season guy! He was the one that helped her video tape herself healing, wasn't he?

The season two DVD has some cool extras including a fairly long "documentary" on Takezo Kensei.
