Not having grown up in Texas I really didn't know there was such a thing as a pledge to a state flag.

I attended school in several states and although we always said the pledge of allegience to the United States flag I never heard of a pledge to a state flag until I started working for a school district in Texas.

Something else I did not find out about until school started this year which I'm quite encouraged about is that the 80th Texas Legislature passed a bill (House Bill 1034) which went into effect June 15th, 2007 that adds a phrase to the Texas pledge, "...one state under God..."

The pledge of allegiance to the Texas state flag is now:
'Honor the Texas flag; I pledge allegiance to thee, Texas, one state under God, one and indivisible.'

Good to hear. I know we have a pledge to the Georgia flag that we used to do but we stopped doing it because no one really knew it.

I suppose that there was a pledge to the flag back when Texas was its own country. (I should brush up on my Texas history. :) ) I hadn't heard about the adding of the "under God" phrasing to it, though. Interesting.

Yeah, all my kids said the Texas pledge in school, but my wife grew up in Texas and said she didn't, that that was a more recent developement.

Proud to be a Texan! I never said the TX pledge growing up, but I learned it when I started student teaching back in 2001.

We recited the pledge everyday when I was in elementary school back in the late 80's and early 90's

we certainly didn't say a pledge to a state flag. We said a pledge to our nation's flag, because that's the one that matters. I don't understand the need for a state flag pledge.

Most conservatives believe in giving power to the states...in the early days of our country, the states basically governed themselves until we found out that wouldn't work...however, there's still the balance of power between the states and the federal government. The states still have sovereignty over most issues, such as when California recently took major steps towards legalizing gay marriage. That's why we pledge to a state flag...the states still have sovereignty.

Even though I'm skeptical of our nations Govt, even on the state level, I am a proud American and think a pledge to a flag and/or the USA is a good thing.

I'm always the one with my hat in my hands at events where the Star Spangled tune is sung/played. We have a lot to be thankful for. :)

I know that dearheart-I took civics too, as well as multiple poli sci classes. Doesn't mean I like it. :P We didn't ever pledge my state flag when I was in school. I guess MO doesn't get a pledge.

Only six states have pledges to the their flags: Texas, Alabama, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, and Mississippi.

Georgia has one too. We said it every day at the beginning of the year, but since no one knew it our principal kind of stopped doing it.

Plus I had to memorize it in 8th grade.

yep Texas is the best! it is the only state that can have its flag be at the same height as the U.S. flag....because Texas used to be its own country :D

I'm not sure, but I think it also has to do with the fact that not only was Texas its own nation, but that it was annexed into the US rather than purchased... not sure, though. (plug: Baylor University: chartered by the Republic of Texas in 1845. :) )

prayercloth sis... You had to put it in burnt orange, didntcha? :P

While we're on the subject... scbyd23, I really don't like your avitar ;) (I'm kinda hoping that the Baylor game is the one where they fail to regain their composure after halftime... but that's a thought for the sports thread :) )

Now to the original topic... I didn't know about "under God" being added, but it does make me proud to be a Texan.
