View Full Version : Starting that downhill slide into ancientness already...

But I think I just crested the "over the hill" hill when I turned forty, and have now begun my downhill slide, and here's my proof! I bought a new watch recently (the battery had died on my old one, which also had a broken band, so it was cheaper to just buy a new watch at that point)...

and...

and.. *sob* it's just so awful...

I.. I... I... *sniffle*

...had to get one with "EZ Read" numbers! Waaaaaah! Waaaaaah!

Isn't that sad? Sheesh! EZ Read numbers. Other than that, it IS a nice watch though. :)

What's sad is that my close up vision is actually FINE. But I wear contact lenses for distance, so with my contacts I can read street signs fine, but I have to hold my watch about a foot from my face so I can read it.

Actually I traded in that EZ Read watch for a different one. I hated the band on that one, it wasn't adjustable and it was too big for my wrist, PLUS I finally found the very cool moon face watch that I've been looking for. The numbers are a little smaller, but still legible if I hold it a little ways from my face (I decided I was willing to put up with holding it a ways away to read it to get one with the moon phases on it. )

It looks like this one, except that it's got a plain black leather band, and a gold case.

I had one of these before, but it broke, and I've MISSED it. Was VERY happy to find one again, even if I have to squint to read it. LOL.

I can SEE just fine- it's reading that I need specs for. I've had reading glasses since I was 18- *30 years.*

The kicker is that my distance vision is still 20/20. Maybe because 2/3 of my waking hours seem to be spent in front of a computer screen ....

When I was 21 and had my eyes checked for a new prescription, the Doc said that my eyes were equivalent to that of a 63 year old!
I have had a new script every year since then. Sometimes my eyes have changed enough in 6 months that a script has kind of been needed earlier:o

However!
Praise Jesus...I have gone 2 years with the same script! :D I love how He answers prayer!

Still cant see to save my life tho:rolleyes:
bwahahaha

BTW....I am 29...and hmmm10 months...almost. Couldnt be bothered working out the decimal point. ;)

It's comforting to hear that others have to have their script changed each year - mine's a bit like that at the moment.

I have three pairs of glasses - driving (for far), reading (for reading) and a pair with for far (sorry that's Thai for long distance! - truly!) and reading combined - I need these for shopping!

I was having really big problems reading labels, I'd try to see what they said and couldn't tell until I gave it to one of the boys to read and they would laugh and tell me it wasn't English, I was trying to read Thai!!!! I couldn't use these glasses for driving cos I was banging into things by looking out of the reading part instead of the for far part!!!

Eeek!

Cell phones are a problem - I have to check that I can see the silly things before I even consider using them!

Oh well....

So you cant have combined lenses? wow. Thats got to be difficult.

You ever go to rub your eye and you bang and smudge your glasses because you forgot you were wearing them? lol
OR!
Ever had an ant crawl along the inside of the lens? Not that is a spin out! one day I let out a huge "WOAH"! and ducked. Johns like..what? A fly had landed on my glasses right where my pupil would be and stayed there. LOL

Is that old age....or am I just a little strange ;) lol

I used to wear glasses with plastic lenses and half frames (no metal on the bottom.) I cannot begin to tell you how many times I spent 5-10 minutes looking for the things (which were on my face.) Worse than that, I cannot drive with them, and I've done that as well!

I just got my bi-focals 4 weeks ago. The good thing about them is they don't have the line separating the lens but I'm still trying to remember to look down to read close-up. Now I have a twitch from the left eye that is driving me crazy. I was told that's just my eye getting used to the new glasses. Pain in the butt getting old.

Yeah they take a while to get used to - especially driving - but I love them now - sometimes I don't wear them though I wear my for far ones, but then freak out when I can't see things up close...

I just got my eyes checked for the first time in a couple of years yesterday (had to get it done, I was on my last pair of contact lenses, and I wouldn't be able to get more without a new prescription.)

And the doctor said that evil word -- "bifocals", since I said that one of the things I didn't like about contacts was, since I'd gotten them for distance vision, I couldn't really see stuff up close too well (see my original post about that watch.) And he mentioned "those things" which I vetoed immediately, or possibly breaking down and buying some drugstore reading glasses with the weakest prescription I could possibly get. Not too keen on that either, since if I wanted to deal with glasses, I'd just wear glasses.

So what he actually ended up doing was weakening the prescription in my left contact lens a little bit so while I could still see fine for distance, it would make seeing things up close (like my watch, or a menu, or a map) a little easier.

Then after checking out the prescription on my existing contact lens boxes, he said the magic words that suddenly made my $90 exam $140 instead - "you know, this company (coopervision) makes better contacts than these now." Well, since the first thing I do when I get home from work usually is make a beeline for the bathroom to take out my contacts, I was definitely interested. So I ended up getting a new contact lens fitting while I was there as well, and a trial pair of the "new and improved" contacts to try out this week. I'm not sure but I think they ARE actually "new and improved", it's almost 10pm and I still have them in and they're just now making themselves known by being scritchy a little bit. We'll see how they are tomorrow after being in my regular solution ovenight.

But so many things have changed in the two years since I last got my eyes checked - they've done away with the *poof* test, in favor of that "stick the blue neon light right up close to your eye" one, and they make you ring in like on Jeopardy when you see the white spots on screen (to check your peripheral vision). But they still use the same ole put the drops in your eyes to dilate your pupils. I thought since I was getting out at dusk I wouldn't have to worry about being blinded, but as soon as I turned my first corner *WHAM!* It was like I was staring into a billion tiny brilliant suns, with all the headlights of the oncoming cars. Very interesting ride home...

Nice though, that when he checked the prescription of my glasses, that it didn't need to be changed at all. Nice to know that my eyes aren't really getting any worse.

What are you talking about - the 40s are the best years! :P That's when you start feeling all the aches and pains and each year gets worse. (j/k) Nah, it's not that bad... (I'm 45)
(Btw, I have TRIfocals - I have an astigmatism  )

I turned 40 last year, and so far it feels exactly like 39.:P The only harsh reality was, I went to a new Sunday school class in Sep, supposed to be for young families (new parents). I soon discovered I was no longer a new parent. There were members of the class I can remember back when they were in the youth group from when they babysat my friend's son . They are now the young families of the church. I stayed in the class anyway. I still feel 25 inside, no matter what my body tells me.

Back at ya, Bon-Bon... ;) Here's a question for everyone to ponder:

Why is it, as we get older, that hair starts growing out of places on our body that it has no business whatsoever growing out of?!?!?!? :P

I worked at Lenscrafters for almost 8 months...the store closed, becuz we couldn't keep a DR and get a LAB Manager....all that happned b4 i got there...

anyway i sure learned alot and truly enjoyed helping people see...

I had to have my eyes checked and the Dr. told me i needed bifocals...i opted for reading glasses...as my distance is great....

1.25 on my reading....not bad at all...but i hate having to get glasses out to read the back of med. bottles...or very small print...

God Bless your eyesight everyone....and mine too...

I had to start using "reading glasses" about 4 years ago. Started with the 1.25 lenses, but the most recent pair I bought I had to get a 2.00 lense. Yet my distance vision is perfect! But my baby brother (he's 43) now needs bifocals! Revenge is soooooo sweet - especially when God is the one who gets even with him for laughing at me!
