Beleive it or not, there are less than 24 hours to go before the kickoff of the new college football season. There are many questions to be answered this year.....

Who will be #1?
Who will win the SEC?
Will Nick Saban be loved in Alabama?
Who will be the Cinderella team this year?
Who will be the most overated team?

What do you think and what else is of intrigue?

I have no idea....I'm just hoping beyond hope that Butch Davis will bring the Tarheels around to at least win SOME games!

1. Hopefully Auburn, but doubtfully so. We've already had a couple chances.
2. Auburn or LSU. Tough to pick right now.
3. Not after he loses his first Iron Bowl to Auburn.
4. You mean like..wearing a dress? Alabama.
5. LSU...as always

oh yeah...I'm an Auburn Fan/Grad/Employee :)

Who will be #1?
Much as I hate to say this, probably the University of Spoiled Children again. (AKA USC). Pete Carroll's built such a monster that Urban Meyer appears to be raiding his players.

Who will win the SEC?
Gotta go w/LSU, just because of their returning depth and how badly the Gators were depleted by the attrition from graduation.

Will Nick Saban be loved in Alabama?
Sadly, 'bama fans have proven their love is about as fickle as a Black Widow. Nick can't graduate his players or honor his contracts. Tide faithful had best remember that you get what you pay for.

Who will be the Cinderella team this year?
I badly want to say Notre Dame, but though I think they'll do better than what many so called 'experts' predict - I think they're gonna shut up a lot of people - I honestly don't know. However, Matt's got a pretty good point - the thought of Nick Saban in a dress is pretty funny.... :)

Who will be the most overated team?
Don't know yet, but with their schedule and inexperience no one can reasonably say Notre Dame this year. If they manage to win 8 or 9 games they'll be worthy of national recognition.

My Teams in order of preference.

Bug Eaters (Nebraska for the less informed)
Razorbacks (I have my HogHead for the Hog Pit)
LSU (for a friend!)
Auburn (one of the first schools to recruit me)
Texas (one of the schools interested in me and I was interested in going to)

After that it really doesn’t matter…:P
Personally, Saban ditched his kids for money (in the middle of a possible college dynasty) and didn’t have what it takes to be a pro. I hope he flops and has to go back to teaching phys-ed in a high school some where!! Leaving on top is just a copout for not having the confidence to repeat your success.

* Who will be #1? USC whom I dislike as much as Notre Dame when they were a top five program.
* Who will win the SEC? I don't know what teams are in the SEC and always confuse the conference with the ACC. Go Big Ten!
* Will Nick Saban be loved in Alabama? No.
* Who will be the Cinderella team this year? Iowa
* Who will be the most overated team? USC

Kent State, preseason choice to win the MAC, beats the team up the road from me last night.
Kent State 24
Iowa State 14
Gene Chizik has a lot more work to do at ISU.

1) In the highly unlikely event that LSU runs the table (it is the SEC after all), or if USC has one loss going into the end of the season, I'm picking LSU. If USC is undefeated at year end and meets anyone other than LSU, then I'm picking USC.

2) LSU

3) Alabama, regardless of what ESPN or other sports/tabloid entertainment media may tell the general public, does have many realistic fans who know it's highly unlikely that Alabama will win more than 8 games this year (it will probably be 7). That said, Alabama fans will love Nick Saban, and realistic fans know that Tubberville's all-around better team will likely beat Alabama again.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The Board of Trustee's (Idiots) at Alabama should be shot for: #1 not hiring Bobby Bowden in the early 80's, and #2 not firing Schula after year 2 and hiring Spurrier who, and I quote "would have crawled to Tuscaloosa" for the head coaching job.

4) It could very well be FSU. Bowden has Jimbo Fisher running the offense, which will definitely make them more potent.

5) Notre Dame. Again. But if USC had to play an SEC schedule, then I would say USC.

...But if USC had to play an SEC schedule, then I would say USC.Okay, I need to vent about something that's been bugging me for a couple of years: last year the Big 10 (yeah, I know it's actually 11 schools) played an average schedule that was tougher than the average schedule for the SEC.

And Ehud, I'm not picking on you. But sometimes it seems as though the majority of the college football fans on this section of the boards think that all college football revolves around just the SEC. (This thread is a classic example: the only conference that respondents were asked to pick the champion of was the SEC). News flash, guys: of the 3 winningest teams of all time, none of them are in the deep south. Taking nothing away from the quality of schools like Florida and LSU, you've got just as many doormats in places like Starkville and Nashville as you do in conferences like the Big 12 and Big 10. All college football does not begin and end in the SEC. ;)

one of best quarterbacks in the country (Reggie Ball).

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! :P :P

For one thing, Reggie Ball graduated.

For another, one of the BEST quarterbacks in the country? LOL :D

There's a reason why Clemson was able to put the beatdown on Georgia Tech last year...because Reggie Ball is HORRIBLE. He was NEVER good. Clemson held Calvin Johnson to 0 catches because Reggie Ball couldn't get him the ball! To even have a chance at being drafted he had to enter the draft as a WIDE RECEIVER who ran a 4.8 and couldn't even catch the ball! :D

The quarterback they have now started the bowl game against West Virginia...Taylor Bennett. He played great, but he's still an inexperienced quarterback.

I think Clemson's gonna surprise some people...they're one of the hardest teams to predict. Some have said 9-3 and an Atlantic Division title...Mark May on ESPN says 6-6, and SI says 7-5.

Hopefully they can get some momentum against FSU...I don't care what anyone says, we have the best running back duo in the country.

I think the SEC winner will either be Florida or LSU?

I think that Nick Saban will be loved in alabama.

The two underdogs this year will be ALABAMA and South Carolina

The most overated teams will be LSU and USC.

I think Mark May got kicked in the head one time too many while playing in the NFL. He seems to be one of the most consistently wrong commentators currently covering either college or pro ball for ESPN. (And I really hope the Irish wipe that gloating look off of his face he's had all week in talking about how Notre Dame will be lucky to score against the G-Tech defense and how prepared the Jackets are to come into South Bend. Like a guy who's been the offensive coordinator for 3 Super Bowl champs and groomed one of the 2 best quarterbacks in the NFL won't have his team prepared? Please..... )

Ooops - that one got a little carried away. Good luck to the Tigers Monday......:D

True, college football does not begin and end in the SEC, though it ended for Ohio St. and Notre Dame last year in the SEC, shamefully I might add. There are great teams in other Conferences, and the SEC has some doormats (all Mississippi teams, and often Kentucky or Vanderbilt), but the chances of 1 team going undefeated in the SEC is extremely slim, much moreso than other conferences. Just about the only way an SEC team has a chance to play for the national championship is if they are undefeated, and that still isn't guaranteed even if they are clearly 1 of the top 2 teams in the country (see Auburn 2004).
There is a reason FSU and Miami have refused to join the SEC all these years.

I would put the SEC champion up against the other best school in the country, and honestly believe the SEC would come out ahead better than 50% of the time. I think it would have happened in 2004 with Auburn. Also, had USC and LSU played in 2003, I believe LSU would have won.
Urban Meyer, Steve Spurrier, Tommy Tubberville, Nick Saban, Mark Richt, Phillip Fulmer....these are all very high-caliber coaches who have to fight each other for wins.

There are non-SEC teams I have always liked: Oklahoma, Michigan, Texas, Nebraska, who are, or have been, top-tier/elite teams. While these teams, and others, may be very good, I just don't see their conferences being as tough from top to bottom as the SEC.

I'm simply playing the odds. It seems like every year is supposed to be THE year Notre Dame returns to glory, only to seemingly underachieve yet again. If they go 5-1 or 4-2, then no I wouldn't say they were overrated.I certainly can't argue with that; they've got to become nasty enough to close out a season strong and whip up on someone considered their equal in a bowl game. They seem to be moving in that direction with Weiss having scored back to back top 5 recruiting classes (something that hasn't happened since Lou Holtz left) and also landing last years top rated high school quarterback in the country in Jimmie Clausen. They're young right now, but with new defensive coordinator Corwin Brown (who's every bit as intense as Weiss) and more Blue Chip studs than they've had in over a decade, I can't wait to see them in a couple of years. :D
True, college football does not begin and end in the SEC, though it ended for Ohio St. and Notre Dame last year in the SEC, shamefully I might add.Fair enough, though I'll also add it ended in the Big 10 for Tennessee and Arkansas. But at least they deserve credit for making a game out of it. Oh, yeah - even with last years whipping the Irish still have a lifetime record of 49 wins and 19 losses against the SEC; no conference school that has played them at least twice has a winning record against them. :)

However, I'll agree that the SEC is stronger top to bottom than the Big 10 (and definitely than any other conference). And it undoubtedly has more hostile road enclaves than any other conference, which makes a win there even sweeter for any team outside of the conference that is able to escape with one.

So here in Waco, it's officially Saturday morning. And that means one thing....

IT'S GAME DAY!!! GAAAAAAAAAME DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!!! ! GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA ME DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYY!!!!! !

My beloved Baylor Bears are playing TCWho later today, and the entirety of the Baylor University Golden Wave Band (of which I am a part) is travelling to blast out the brains of the opposing team's fans. How will the Bears do? Good question... I haven't heard anything about this year's team. One thing's for sure, the sad soul who is taking over Shawn Bell's QB position has some big shoes to fill. (I still maintain that if A&M had not knocked out Bell, we would have one that game and ended up going to a bowl game. That's in the past, though....) Anyways...... I'm excited. It's not a home game, so we don't have the excitement that comes along with that type of atmosphere, but I'm still looking foward to the game!

*whistles Superman theme, and waves the Baylor Trumpets flag high over his head*

On a side note, let it be known that being a mere spectator at a college football game offers no comparison to being a band member at a college football game.

Since the USC 1st game slaughter a few years back, Auburn fans have always been worried about such sluggish starters. And indeed, this one was a nail biter. I think if we get our act together and play the whole game like we played the last 5 minutes, then we'll be contenders for the SEC championship. If not though, we're going to have a tough time against Florida and LSU...especially with those being away games!

.....No matter how you look at it, a Division II school beating a National Championship contender is a HUGE deal.Dan, I agree that the upset was a huge deal, but also want to make an important clarification: Appalachian State is actually classified as a D-1 school, not DII. (They compete in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision, which prior to 2006 was called Division 1-AA and still uses that title on an informal basis).

I don't mean to seem like a semantical nazi, but there are big differences between 1-AA and D-II (the biggest being the number of players on scholarship and size of the athletic department budgets). 1-AA is still an extremely competitive level of ball, having produced NFL stars such as Jerry rice, Walter Payton, and Doug Williams. There are many who thought that the Mountaineer teams of the last two years may have been a stronger team than many BCS elgible teams; I'm actually not totally surprised that they beat Michigan, because this is a very good football program.

In a nutshell, the thinking by the Board of Governors appears to have been this: College football was the only NCAA sport where the labels 1-A and 1-AA were used, and it was causing confusion with the press (not to mention the fans) because there are many schools that were classified as Division 1 in other sports (such as basketball) but as division 1-AA in football. So they voted last August to implement a name change, and it went into effect last December.

For those unfamiliar w/the new names - which is probably just about everybody - the 'Football Bowl Subdivision' - previously Div. 1-A - is comprised of the 11 conferences currently included in the Bowl Championship series format, along with the major independents. The 'Football Playoff Subdivision' - previously Div. 1-AA - is comprised of 15 of the 19 remaining conferences in Div. 1 football. Their National Championship is decided by a single game elimination, 16 team playoff. There are a number of factors that determine which category a school/conference falls into, with enrollment and home attendance being two of the key ones.

See? I told you it was as complicated as the Infield Fly Rule....:D.

Well, our qb basically handed ASU the game by throwing 5 ints. It wasn't like ASU players made great plays on the ball, Sean Canfield just threw it right to them.

Had he only threw 2 ints, we would be talking about a different result. ;)

I'm not sure I would complain about that. I'd be happy just knowing our qb could actually complete a pass, regardless if it were to the other team.

I would like to take this opportunity to extend a heartfelt THANK YOU!!!!!! to both Anthony Morelli and Austin Scott for their superb efforts on Saturday against Michigan. Austin, thank you for fumble at the Michigan 7 yard line, your third in two games. Good job!!!!! Mr. Morelli, where to start  OH! How could I forget, thank you so much for protecting the ball as if it were a loaf of bread, allowing it to get snatched out of your hand (FUMBLE!!!) at your own 10 yard line. And, if that were not good enough, what an extra special effort you put into that final drive. That was a great 40 yard throw, into double coverage, on 4th and 10. YOU NEEDED 10 YARDS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Morelli sucks. It's good to see Big Blue turning things around. Maybe now they'll stop calling for Lloyd Carr's head.

Let me see... my impressions of College football so far.

McFadden is a STUD! probably the most impressive and dominant player in college football right now.

Kentucky is still not getting any props. Why is that? I still hear more about Loserville than the Wildcats.. Wildcats stomped them too...

LSU seems to be getting underrated because USC crushed Nebraska on the road. Troy dropped 40 points of the Huskers.. they ain't that good.

USC is the "factory" it used to be. their 3rd line of players start on 90% of Division 1 teams, but they won't be in the BCS game.

Notre Dame is just horrible bad.. Division II bad..

Michigan is funny.. the Big Ten is a joke. How could Penn State not watch game films?? Go 4 wide with your fastest players and Michigan has no idea what to do. Guess the Big Ten will trust in their NCAA nepotism to not match them up against the SEC or PAC10 in the bowl games. Big Ten D doesn't have the horses to match up with either conference at all.

Sad to say, but Auburn is not an elite team.

Sad to say Georgia is not an elite team.

Sad to say.. Florida is an elite team and will probably make it back to the BCS game with Teabow under center.

Once again, the SEC schedule is going to ruin 2 teams chances of a Championship bid (same in the PAC10).

Oklahoma might back-in to a BCS title game because the only test they have is Oct 6 against Texas, but I don't think Texas is a top-shelf team on the same level as Florida, LSU, and USC.

Biggest games coming up?

USC Nov 10th at Cal - both teams will be undefeated or Cal with one loss. This game probably decides the West Coast team for the BCS
LSU Oct 6th Florida - Probably determines the SEC team to the BCS

Must watch???
Central Florida and how many heartbreaks they can deliver during the rest of this season. After they beat West Virginia this weekend, there is no one else on their schedule to stop them from being undefeated. Wonder how the BCS will deal with that?

You know what? One would assume that to be the case, wouldn't they? At least if you are going to continually run that stupid draw play, line four up and sprint them down the field!!!!!!! But then again, you actually have to have some one that can get the ball to the receivers in order to be effective, and guess what? Morelli ain the guy.

3 and out, 3 and out, 3 and out, 3 and out. Illinois is going to kick the crap out of us. Their running game will have us wornn out midway through the third quarter becuase we won't make any first downs. I can assure Zook spent plenty of time watching, and rewatching the Michigan film.

Penn State football Q&A with Ron Musselman

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Click here to submit your question

Q: How could PSU not put together a spread package using Daryll Clark at QB after seeing how other teams had killed Michigan with such a package? UGH!

Dave Ketchda, Auburn, Ala.

MUSSELMAN: They wouldn't have even needed Clark at QB to pull it off - they could have kept Morelli in the game. Penn State had been using five-wide receiver sets earlier in the season to spread the field, but opted away from that strategy against the Wolverines. The Penn State coaching staff seems to freeze up every time they see the Maize and Blue uniforms of Michigan

Hey Jason, I was at the ASU/Cal game Saturday night and had a ball. It was a fun atmosphere and fairly exciting to be there. I noticed Lee Corso in his top 5 has Oregon #1 and Ohio State #2. Personally, I think Oregon is really good and should have beaten Cal but turnovers did them in during the 4th Quarter. Should be the game of the week this week as ASU heads to Oregon. Most folks, if they were to admit it, believed Cal would beat ASU.

For ASU to beat Oregon, they must have a better first half. They can not continue to rely on strong finishes to pull out victory. Oregon's qb is terrific and ASU must find a way to keep him contained.

A lot of people are going to be moving around. We've got Houston Nut probably going to be leaving Arkansas, Michigan's coach is leaving which mean's LSU's coach will probably go to Michigan, and A&M's coach is most likely leaving. Sorry, I'm awful with names, but Houston Nut is hard to forget. ;)

Hopefully Les Miles will go to Michigan. Most people think he will, but if he doesn't, I'm going to be upset that Lloyd Carr retired. In other words, I'd be happy seeing Les Miles at Michigan, but don't see anyone else out there that could do a better job than Lloyd Carr.

Well, this doesn't happen very often, so I'll gloat a little bit. MS State finished with a winning season and beat Ole Miss. Woo Hoo. I have to admit, I thought it would turn out the other way, though. Great comeback for the bulldogs. The highlight of the game, however, was an MSU fan holding a sign which said "I am not an Ole Miss football player, but I did steal something from Holiday Inn Express last night". :D :D :D

The first half of KU/Mizzou was pathetic on the Kansas side. They didn't look like an undefeated team at all. They lit up in the second half, but the defense couldn't keep Mizzou off the scoreboard enough for the offense to catch up.

kU didn't play OU. They played Oklahoma St. Mizzou is the hardest team they played against all year, and they lost. :D kU had the wussiest schedule in the Big 12, so of course they played that well before they met up with us.

I'm thinking Mizzou is going to do well this Saturday. We had the lead in Norman and self-destructed. We're a more mature team now than we were then and the communication issues have been resolved. And since we're playing in San An, OU won't have the home field advantage. I'll be cheering for my Tigers in San Antonio next weekend--we got tickets last night!!!

According to The Arizona Republic:

The Sun Devils (9-2) remain in the running for a BCS berth in the Rose Bowl should they beat Arizona and UCLA upset USC on Saturday. Otherwise their best chance for a BCS berth is to win and have Missouri beat Oklahoma in the Big 12 title game. Then ASU and Kansas likely would meet in the Fiesta Bowl, Jan. 2 in Glendale.

If Oklahoma wins the Big 12 title, the Fiesta could pair the Sooners and Kansas, who have not met this season. ASU at 10-2 then likely would play against Texas in the Holiday Bowl, Dec. 27 in San Diego.

If ASU loses to Arizona, the Sun Devils still could play in the Holiday Bowl if Oregon loses to Oregon State on Saturday. The final BCS standings and BCS bowl pairings will be announced Dec. 2.

ASU's worst-case bowl scenario is the Sun Bowl, Dec. 31 in El Paso.

And a joke:
What's the difference between the Arizona Wildcats and Cheerios?

Cheerios belong in a bowl.

Hawaii does deserve a BCS bid. I'm all for strength of schedule playing a SMALL role in determining this, but you can't punish a school for playing the schedule that they're given. Put them in a BCS game and then maybe next year you can give them a tougher schedule.

As for the National Championship game, I think Mizzou and WVU (I've been a Floirda fan first and a WVU fan second for as long as I can remember, so I'm happy), are both in a "win and you're in" scenario.

"Unless, of course, both Missouri and West Virginia lose, USC hops over idle Georgia in the BCS standings and Ohio State and the Trojans then get to meet Jan. 7 in the Big Easy."

How does #8 USC make it to number two by simply beating UCLA and having number one and two lose?

In this scenario:

3. Ohio State 11-1 - becomes number 1
4. Georgia 10-2 - season over - do they drop for not being in a conference championship?
5. Kansas 11-1 - season over - do they drop?
6. Virginia Tech 10-2 - must lose at BC
7. LSU 10-2 - must lose SEC championship to TN

So at best doesn't that make USC number six?

Should it read: "Missouri, West Virginia, Virginia Tech, LSU lose, and USC hops over idle GA and Kansas."?

There must be something in the BCS equation that I'm not aware of, okay there is a lot of stuff in the BCS equation that I'm not aware of, but who can enlighten me?

Typical East Coast bias and Big Ten love-fest to me...

There is NO WAY Ohio State should even be in the running. They beat NO ONE and lost to an also-ran AT HOME. Played less games and are now idle. They have not done anything to prove they are not the team that lost to a sort-of good Illinois team at home. Beating Michigan was a given since they now dominate that match up. They truly have done nothing to prove they are worthy of their current ranking other than not lose to a quality team.... which of course they won't play..

I never understood how a team that barely loses to the #1 team (that was already ranked directly above them) drops so far in the polls. Missouri should have beaten Kansas and did. Kansas should have made it close to prove they were worthy of their ranking and did.. How do they suddenly drop below Ohio State who still has done NOTHING..

I love Dan Wetzel's column on the playoff... sounds just about right to me..

It is highly unlikely that USC will make it into the championship. However, they are HOT right now and can probably beat anyone in the nation at this time. The key word is RIGHT NOW. Of course they had their chance. We are just fans expressing our frustration/disapointment. Nothin' wrong with that.

I'm having a difficult time understanding how USC "sucks?" They have been the most dominant team in NCAA football the past 5 years. Does LSU "suck" for losing two games? How about Georgia? They lost twice as well. What about Oklahoma(10-2)? I never realized only losing two games in an entire season was so terrible. Hmmm...I guess you learn something new every day. ;)

Nah, they don't really suck. I have an innate hatred for all things USC. ;) I just am getting frustrated with sports writers who won't put faith in Midwest teams like my own and stick with the normals like LSU and USC when they don't really have a snowball's chance in . . .to get into a nat'l championship. Let someone else take the torch for a while, ya know?
And believe me, I understand disappointment. I'm a Missouri fan. We feel it every day. ;) This is the first time since 1960 that we've been #1, and that position got taken away by us because of a loss to Kansas--a game that was later forfeited because Kansas played an ineligible player. Talk about a heartbreaker, yeah? :(

I mean heck, you're a witness to it. We don't have a great record at bowl games either. We lost to your team last year at the Sun Bowl by 1 measly point. We finally get to cheer at the end of an important game, not gripe about what could have gone differently like we have had to do for so many years. Its no fun making up excuses for why your team lost, as obviously any sports fan knows. :P

Ohio State plays no one and doesn’t go undefeated. Doesn’t play in the last 2 weeks while everyone else is killing each other and end up No. #1?

Other than total bias and money… what possible reason does the Big Ten have to say they are a quality conference? From what I remember when those top teams stepped out of conference that got beat down..

Vince McMahon probable runs the BCS anywho..:P

This is just the first strength of schedule that came up on a Google search.

15. Mississippi State (6-5) 0.202 first team listed that has a winning record
44. Georgia (9-2) 0.073
52. Virginia Tech (10-2) 0.041
57. LSU (11-2) 0.030
61. USC (10-2) 0.012
66. Oklahoma (11-2) 0.001
75. Ohio State (10-1) -0.064

Here are the top six teams in both the AP and USA today poll and their strength of schedule. OSU is down there and I would say Georgia is the one that deserves a shot at them.

http://web1.ncaa.org/d1mfb/Internet/toughest%20schedule/ia_9games_cumm.pdf

The NCAA puts OSU at 48th. Virginia Tech is number 3!

Gotta run but this is some more to chew on until the standings come out in a little over 90 minutes.

I'm Big 12 and wanted that, too.

So..... I think this should be sufficient evidence for the need of a playoff system. Anyone else?

yeah, I think that either they all have a championship game or none of them do. That way no one can back their way into the Nat'l championship game. I can hear the beeping now. . .

If you have a three game lead, lose your last two games, then get into a championship IMHO it is backing in. By MY definition OSU did not back in. Everyone else backed out. :P

Ed: "Tiger Woods posted a number and waited for them to fall." That was said by the commentator next to Chris Rose.

Number one and two lost SEVEN times this week out of twelve games. Heard that on the radio.

OK, now I'm triple pissed. LSU v. OSU for championship, and Mizzou didn't even get a BCS bowl. No, no. That went to kU, who does NOT deserve it. Even the sports dudes know that. I'm not just saying that because I'm ticked. GRRR. I'm crying now.

Georgia probably got robbed, but Mizzou DEFINITELY got robbed, and I'm not even a fan of Mizzou. Kansas has the 109th toughest schedule and has only beaten one ranked team...#24 Kansas State.

This season has been ruined by money and politics. I went to a college football PLAYOFF game last night (Richmond at Wofford) and the atmosphere was great. The only reason why we can't have this in D-1A is money. Money, money, money. What a joke.

Plus, Ohio State didn't deserve to get in it either because of their 75th ranked schedule. They haven't beat anyone. Georgia beat 4 ranked teams. Virginia Tech beat some great teams. Oklahoma beat the #1 team twice.

Ohio State only moved up because they were #3 last week...Georgia was #4, so why didn't they move up since Ohio State moved up? I don't get it. I thought it was bogus that Florida jumped Michigan last year, but that's another story. The BCS is ruining college football for me. I wonder if we could get people to stop giving money to the schools by buying tickets and merchandise, if that would convince the college presidents that it would be in their best interests to think about their fans instead of their wallets.

EDIT: According to the computers, Virginia Tech was the #1 team. Thought that was interesting.

Surprising Kansas to face ACC champ Va. Tech in Orange Bowl

Associated Press

Updated: December 2, 2007, 8:38 PM ET

A week later than it wanted, Kansas beat Missouri. And an Orange Bowl bid is the surprising Jayhawks' reward.

The eighth-ranked Jayhawks (11-1) got their first Bowl Championship Series berth Sunday and will meet Virginia Tech (No. 3 BCS, No. 5 AP) (11-2) in Miami on Jan. 3.

Kansas, which set a school record for wins, was an at-large pick. The Hokies got their Orange Bowl spot by beating Boston College for the Atlantic Coast Conference title.

The programs have never met.

Kansas' national championship hopes were dashed in a 36-28 loss to Missouri on Nov. 24, a game that sent the Tigers into the Big 12 Championship.

In the final BCS standings, sixth-ranked Missouri was two spots ahead of the Jayhawks, yet the Orange Bowl went with Kansas, a move certain to spark controversy.

Missouri led the BCS standings entering the weekend, then got knocked from the title game by losing to Oklahoma Saturday.

No conference can have three BCS representatives, so the Tigers ended up losing again Sunday when the Orange Bowl opted to give Kansas its first invitation to a January bowl game since 1969.

Neither Virginia Tech nor Kansas has ever won South Florida's showcase college game.

Kansas lost to Georgia Tech in 1948 and to Penn State 21 years later. The latter was the so-called "12th man game" when the Nittany Lions got the winning two-point conversion with 15 seconds remaining after Kansas was flagged for having 12 men on the field for the first try.

Virginia Tech's only Orange Bowl appearance was Dec. 31, 1996, a 41-21 loss to Nebraska.

:( I can understand the drop in our rankings completely. I was at the game last night, and Mizzou DID NOT show up. But to drop us out like that? Yeesh.

And now they're going to be in Dallas, and I can't even go. :( We're celebrating Texas Christmas that day. (we're going to Missouri for real Christmas). Boo.

And on a side note, I'm going to whine. I blew a tire on the way home from San Antonio today, and then once I finally got home my laptop fell out of my backpack (I thought it was zipped and it apparently wasn't) and now I have a busted compy. There's broken-pixel lines all up and down the screen. Boo. Worst weekend ever.

I'm feeling your pain. My Oregon State Beavers got ripped-off. They finished third in the Pac-10 and got sent to the Emerald Bowl, which is for the 4th pac-10 team. The Oregon Ducks, who the Beavers just beat, had the same record and are going to the Sun Bowl, which is designated for the 3rd place Pac-10 team. I know the Sun Bowl can choose the teams from the designated conferences, and probably wanted a new team in El Paso this year.

ASU should have been in a BCS game(along with Mizzou) which would have moved OSU up to the Holiday bowl. But instead, we got the short end of the stick and are playing 6-6 Maryland in the Emerald Bowl. I can only say that the Beavers better annihilate the Terrapins to prove they deserved a better bowl. GO BEAVS!!!

ESPN (mostly Herbstreet) are such bowl whores..
They can actually report, and try to sound intelligent, that Ohio State deserves to be in the title game because of their record, but deny Oklahoma because “if they’d looked all season like that did last weekend...”. So, if that is the standard, then how does Ohio merit a shot after looking sooo good against Illinois?

I seriously hope LSU does an ever better job of making sure the Big Ten is humiliated once again. I feel sorry for the players, but something has to shake this monopoly loose so everyone has a REAL chance to be #1

hehe...ESPN is so unprofessional. Lou Holtz, former South Carolina coach, got in a cheap shot against Clemson and then they started calling Clemson "Auburn with a lake." It will be a good game, though. You'll get a nice little dose of Thunder and Lightning. ;)

Who would have thought after the crazy loss to Appalachian State at the start of the season that Michigan would have the big bowl game win for the Big 10 over an SEC team?
