Ok, I need a little advice on this one. I've always been a nail-biter and have made a real effort within the last year to stop. Now I see that BOTH of my kids are knawing on their nails....AND TOENAILS!!!! Eeeewww!!!
Any suggestions on how to get them to stop? I know it's not a good habit.

I bite my nails, I do it without even thinking.

I fingerprint a lot of people each year (so I get to hold (and look at) their hands).

My experience is that the very vast majority of people do not bite their nails (or looking at it a different way, people who bite their nails rarely get burgled??).

However, I always notice when they do - like today (an hour ago) I fingerprinted a man who bites his nails.

A habit like that has to be stopped as early as possible, the longer it carries on the harder it is to stop.

...Maybe associating it with appearance and how other people see it could help. I know that on the few occasions where I stopped for a few months it was because I was making an effort with my appearance.

...A lesson on germs and hygeine and what lives under broken cracked fingernails?

I am probably not the best person to give advice, my nails are bitten right down to the quick every week.

I don't know if they still make it, but at one point some company (it might have been Sally Hanson) made this stuff that you paint on like nail polish, and it tastes really FOUL. Made specifically to help break the nail biting habit.

Something like that might do the trick. I think it was called Sally Hanson's Nail Biter or something along those lines.

Hmmm... wonder if something like that would work on cigarettes. LOL. It probably WOULD, if you didn't mind risking it blowing up in your face as soon as you lit up (fairly certain the stuff is probably flamable.) I can hear it now "Yes, I've stopped smoking! How? Oh it was easy, if you don't mind walking around sans eyebrows! :D "

I used a bad tasting varnish type stuff on the nails thingy when I was a child, I used to give me an unpleasant reminder not to bite my nails and worked so long as I remembered to apply it every day. If I recall, it tasted like grapefruit (very sour).

I have always thought that the best way to try to stop smoking cigarettes is to eat one - by the time you have stopped throwing up the experience would be indelibly imprinted in your mind and should stop you smoking (I would imagine it would be hard to even look at a cigarette after that).

Of course, I need volunteers to try my new technique....

I was terrible about biting my nails down to the quick as a child, and my Mom got that stuff and it worked!! I quit biting my nails, and haven't started back up to this day.

That is totally hilarious about trying it on cigarettes! Never thought of that. I wonder who I could try that on......:P

I may just go ahead and look for the stuff you paint on the fingers. I really worry about them continuing to bite their nails. Thanks for all of you guys' advice!!
