View Full Version : growing 'old' gracefully

Hey... I haven't coloured my hair for about two and a half years now... it's actually looking quite cool as the grey (or silver as I call it) has kind of streaked itself in a wonderful way... I made Kevin laugh the other day when I told him I wanted to go get the 'leftover' natural colour died silver as well!!!

Be encouraged to grow out your fake hair colour - it's not as traumatic as I thought it would be and somewhere in the word it speaks of our crown of wisdom doesn't it? :) :) :)

Hmmm, welllll, it is a family trait to go grey early in my family, I have quite alot of greybies in my hair in random patches, I was never a big fan of dying, until I decided I was not going to be a young looking 30 year old with grey hair - so yes, I now dye!!

Confession session over!;)

LOL... love it !!

you Aussie chicks rock!!!!!!

I saw a woman in NZ last time, she had really long grey hair all bundled up deliciously on the top of her head - I walked over to her and complemented her and thanked her for her encouragement to me, just seeing her...

She would have been in her seventies...

Somehow people think when you get to a certain age you have to chop all your hair off - my mum was hassling me at Christmas time, you know, stuff like, you'd look younger with short hair Sharon... eek... I really don't suit short hair...

Difficult to balance between being mutton dressed as lamb and dressing like an old person!!!

I think I may adopt the ancient hippie look and just look weird! At least I'll feel young!! :) :)

I don't want to be mutton dressed as lamb, but working in the heart of the City every day, and running a college where visitors can appear unnanounced, I've had to upgrade the wardrobe recently. It needs to be fashionable, more so than the years when I was working in schools in the suburbs. Meetings with the owner, other members of this organisation, and discussions with people outside the group often involve lunch at a Restaurant or Cafe.

I think the term is even a little old now as older women can quite tastefully dress with a bit of funkiness and look great.. I think the term may be from the fifties when everything had more defined boundaries... :) :) I'm sure you're looking lovely Sandie...

I know what you mean about working in a suburban school, I used to teach in very casual clothing as I sat on the floor a lot with the kids and loved to get art into most lessons!!!

sandie
05-05-2007, 04:49 AM
I'll do. :P It is different to scrabbling around with students, although I've always dressed neatly.

I'm probably discussing a contract with another college this Wednesday, in which we will give their students English lessons, thus allowing students with a lower level of English into Australia. For that, the Director of Studies at our parent college will wear a tie, and we'll have Tapas downstairs at the Spanish Restaurant, with the Executive Officer and Compliance Officer of the other college. So, I need to be suitably dressed for a business lunch with these three gentlemen. (I'll forego the glass of wine with lunch, however.)

...I think I may adopt the ancient hippie look and just look weird! At least I'll feel young!! :) :)Sounds like a plan. Funny time for this thread to show up, I'm just about 2 months from turning 40, and have been trying to go clothes shopping this week for some new pants, and it's been AWFUL. I've been to three places thus far, and only one place had anything I wanted to try on, and that stuff was either too big or two small. The other two, well, last night's store hit the problem right on the head - in the Junior department (where I tend to be, mentally anyway) every pair of pants had these little two inch long zippers (with "nice" low waistlines to match). No thank you, you'd not be wanting to see ME letting it all hang out like that.

So I move over to the grownup ladies department, and literally every single pair of pants that they had were made from polyester and had full elastic waists. NO NO NO!

Surely there has to be SOMEPLACE that sells NORMAL clothes for people who aren't quite Juniors anymore but aren't quite ready for elastic waisted polyester pull on Senior pants either.

(And no offense to anyone who DOES wear elastic waisted polyester pull on pants. ;) My mother dressed me in stuff like that all through elementary school, and I was scarred for life, so I avoid them like the plague now.)

Going to store number 4 this morning, we'll see how I do there.

EDIT: Veni Vidi Visa! I came I saw I shopped. Yay! FINALLY. Four pairs of pants, three new headbands, two new shirts, and a partridge in a pear tree. Well no partridge, but a new store credit card so I could get the 15% off my purchase today. And there were two clothing sections in the store that I didn't even get to yet. I feel much better now. :)

All this talk about letting our natural hair color show through and I was planning to put blonde streaks in my hair for the summer. I've never colored my hair. I was born a red-head. Then it turned platinum blonde and turned brown in my 20's. I never plan to cut my hair short....my mom did it to me once. I have naturally curly hair....it was NOT a pretty sight!

And Karen where in the world did you finally go shopping?

I believe I was born with an attitude...blonde or not;)

I just have to find a day when I can sit at the beauty shop ALL day...as long as my hair is it will take all day to color it!

NurseBettyLu
05-05-2007, 08:35 PM
I color my hair because it won't go gray enough. It's naturally about 30% gray which is just enough to make it look dull. So on goes the red. I wish it would go white like my grandfather's, how beautiful. Or steel gray like my friend Pam. She's been gray since she was a teenager.

Sharon

I put my own blonde highlights in ....... it's fun!!! I never use the whole kit .... I just mix a little bit up and save the rest. As long as you keep the parts seperate the kit lasts forever.

BTW .... I frost to blend in (read - hide) the grey / white I have showing up. And I don't frost my whole head. Just little highlights put in with a Q-Tip.

And Karen where in the world did you finally go shopping?Kohl's. Walked in this morning, groaned when I saw the typical low hanging clothes in the junior department on the left, but on the RIGHT, racks and racks of "REAL" clothes. And 90% of that was on sale. I was a very happy camper. I was there trying on stuff for 3 hours and STILL had two sections that I hadn't looked through yet. I'll wait until I pay off this bill, then go back again. :P

Re hair color... no sign of grey on ME yet, but I have been working diligently to try and stay mostly the same light blonde that I had growing up. An occasional dose of "Sun-In" every couple of weeks usually does the trick.

kiwisongbird
05-05-2007, 11:07 PM
Be careful with the SunIn, my hair turned to mush when I used too much of it!!!! ;)

All this talk of colouring, I am seriously going to get my hair streaked with more 'silver' as soon as I can afford it - I think it'll be quite funky...

Now for a sad story....

It's raining, Kevin is away with the van and Andre wanted to see a friend off at the airport today, so we had to walk for fifteen minutes in the rain...

The sad part, is I put on some short jeans that are ok with flip flops then put on socks and walking shoes... I looked really dweeby but in my mind thought this..... oh well, I'm old, so I don't have to look cool!!!!!! AAAAaaaaaarrrrRRRGGgggggh hHHHHH!!!!!!

I used Sun-In in the 80's and my hair looked and felt like straw....:o
Now I get my hairdresser to do my color every 6-8 weeks. One week it's perm and cut, the next week she colors. I just want to shower and go when I get up in the mornings.

lemon juice is good in the summer - just squeeze it onto your hair, comb it through and sit in the sun - nice :)Sun? What's that? In the spring and summer it's 100% shade here. Not that I'm complaining, mind you, we're usually the last ones on the block to turn our AC on because with all the trees our house stays a lot cooler, longer.

But I know - Sun-In = dry dry dry eventually  . That's the one thing I DON'T care for about it. But I don't use it ALL the time, just enough to bump up the blond a little bit, and hit it with conditioner regularly, and when I start to feel like I've got Barbie hair, it's usually time for a trim anyway, so I get rid of the worst of the dry ends that way.

I usually get the Sun-In with lemon juice anyway, does that count? :P

Hey be careful girls... be careful with that blonde hair in your forties and older though... I had this super funky, cool, young hairstylist and I quote her....

"Sharon, you need to think about the blonde hair, have a look around at older women with blonde hair, it can make you look older"

So next time I was in New Zealand (not many blondes in Asia!!) I had a good look around - the women who had very blonde hair (not just discreet streaks and highlights) were actually making themselves look very old - that was enough for me and I bit the bullet and let my silver hair break out!

I guess I'm very blessed in that God has provided me with some cool silver streaking - my old age hair is sparkly not slate grey.... :) :) :) :)

Anyway, the song is "Elvis is Everywhere", by Mojo Nixon.

Take it away, dude!

(still can't believe that it isn't Elvis EATS boats... When did that song come out? 1991? I've had it wrong for 16 years!?! Doh!)

When I look out into your eyes out there,
When I look out into your faces,
You know what I see?
I see a little bit of Elvis
In each and every one of you out there.

Lemme tell ya...
Weeeeeeeeeellllllll...

Elvis is everywhere
Elvis is everything
Elvis is everybody
Elvis is still the king

Man o man
What I want you to see
Is that the big E's
Inside of you and me

Elvis is everywhere, man!
He's in everything.
He's in everybody...

Elvis is in your jeans.
He's in your cheesburgers
Elvis is in Nutty Buddies!
Elvis is in your mom!

He's in everybody.
He's in the young, the old,
the fat, the skinny,
the white, the black
the brown and the blue
people got Elvis in 'em too

Elvis is in everybody out there.
Everybody's got Elvis in them!
Everybody except one person that is...
Yeah, one person!
The evil opposite of Elvis.
The Anti-Elvis

Anti-Elvis got no Elvis in 'em,
lemme tell ya.

Michael J. Fox has no Elvis in him.

And Elvis is in Joan Rivers
but he's trying to get out, man!
He's trying to get out!
Listen up Joanie Baby!

Elvis is everywhere
Elvis is everything
Elvis is everybody
Elvis is still the king

Man o man
What I want you to see
Is that the big E's
Inside of you and me

Man, there's a lot of unexplained phenomenon
out there in the world.
Lot of things people say
What the heck's going on?

Let me tell ya!

Who built the pyramids?
ELVIS!
Who built Stonehenge?
ELVIS!

Yeah, man you see guys
walking down the street
pushing shopping carts
and you think they're talking to allah,
they're talking to themself.
Man, no they're talking to ELVIS!
ELVIS! ELVIS!

You know whats going on in that Bermuda Triangle?
Down in the Bermuda Traingle
Elvis needs boats.
Elvis needs boats.
Elvis Elvis Elvis
Elvis Elvis Elvis
Elvis needs boats.

Aahh! The Sailing Elvis!
Captain Elvis!
Commodore Elvis it is.

Yeah man, you know people from outer space,
people from outer space they come up to me.
They don't look like like Doctor Spock.
They don't look like Klingons,
all that Star Trek jive.

They look like Elvis.
ELVIS!
Everybody in outer space looks like Elvis.
Cause Elvis is a perfect being.
We are all moving in perfect peace and harmony towards Elvisness

Soon all will become Elvis.
Everything everywhere will be Elvis.
Why do you think they call it evolution anyway?
It's really Elvislution!
Elvislution!

Elvis is everywhere
Elvis is everything
Elvis is everybody
Elvis is still the king

Man o man
What I want you to see
Is that the big E's
Inside of you and me

That's right ladies and gentlemen,
The time has come!
Time has come to talk
To that little bit of Elvis inside of you.

Talk to it!
Call it up!
Say "Elvis, heal me!"
"Save me, Elvis!"
"Make me be born again
in the perfect Elvis light"

That's right!
You've got that Elvis inside of ya
and he's talkin to ya
He says he wants you to sing!
Everybody's got to sing like the king!

Like the king
Get that leg going now
Get your lip too.
Not no fool Billy Idol lip either
Everybody!
Yeah, we're rockin now!

Elvis is with us.
He's with us and he's speaking to us.
He says "Peoples!"
"Peoples!"
"Everybody!"
"Everybody got to sing!"

Elvis is everywhere
Elvis is everything
Elvis is everybody
Elvis is still the king

Man o man
What I want you to see
Is that the big E's
Inside of you and me

Elvis is everywhere
Elvis is everything
Elvis is everybody
Elvis is still the king

Man o man
What I want you to see
Is that the big E's
Inside of you and me

 SO not my fault. At the time the song came out, I never bought the CD, just heard it on the radio, and you couldn't just google lyrics like you can now, and my friend SAID it went Elvis Eats Boats, and it was such a weird song anyway, I never even THOUGHT that it could be anything else, and I've just been singing it wrong for almost the last 20 years or so. :D

Hey guys, long time no talk! Too bad I had to make an entrance in the "Growing Old" thread  ....about the hair thing, my mom and dad were blessed to have their natural hair color on into their late 40's, and I guess I've inherited that trait also. I'm still a natural brunette, with some strands of gray every once in a while. I still pull them out when I see one,,,,,,,which will need to stop sometime in the near future if I want to keep hair on my head ;) I'm like Wendy, never really did the hair color thing. Never really needed to, but I'm sure one day I'll try it. I have always wanted blue streaks in my hair, unfortunately I think I am a little too old for that now :P

It's funny that you are talking about Grey hair. A few months ago I decided to let my hair return to it natural color. I took several months to grow it out and at times I thought about coloring it just because of people pointing it out to me that I needed to do something. Finally a couple months ago it had finally reached the point where one more hair cut would take care of most of the color. The reactions that I got were interesting to say the least. One friend almost had a panic attack because I had let it go grey. Another let me know that I was very brave to do so, but she wasn't ready to go there yet. And my own sister would not even consider the idea. For the most part the reactions have been good. I'm glad that I did it.:)

One of my friends here used to have her hair dyed regularly - her hair is very short, the hair dresser informed her that it was not healthy to have those chemicals on her hair so often - you know, cancer and stuff - so she bit the bullet and grew it to grey.... WELL!!!!! she would be a great advertisement for doing that... it took years off her - truthfully!!!! She now looks much more feminine, her grey hair softens her visage...she has had her 'colours' done and looks about ten years younger! :) :) :)

At Parachute Music Festival you can usually get streaks bleached into your hair then dyed bright colours - Gomers usually get bright orange ones!!!!

I've always been a little envious of people with dark hair - it would look kinda pointless me having a blue streak in my hair I think... well I think... maybe I should try it one day - only it would limit what you could wear!

One of my friends had her hair half blonde half black - I kinda like that look....

I had blonde hair growing up....it's still blonde but much darker. Mom's side of the family doesn't go gray until VERY late......70's, 80's.....Unfortunately I don't favor that side.....MY hair started graying in my mid 30's.....I dye it just a bit lighter now to bring out the reddish highlights my family naturally has...but I don't keep it on long enough to cover the gray....

I once had a patient from Scotland who had the most beautiful head of hair I have ever seen......She was born with red hair but had gone half gray.....actually her hair looked silver and gold! A mane of hair from heaven!

So.....I refuse to cover my silver hair and decided to "shine up" the darkish blonde....:D

I'm one of those strange people who actually believes that getting older doesn't mean slowing down and not doing the things you used to do. Grey hair isn't really anything. What makes people old is their attitudes.

I'm very much in the same frame of mind as C.S. Lewis when it comes to maturity. Being mature means putting aside the childish notion that one who is an adult should "act their age". What is childish is actually not being mature enough to realize that you ARE an adult. That's right. When you accept the fact that you are an adult, you don't need to "start acting like a grownup", because you already are one. I have the freedom to climb a tree in my backyard as an adult. There is nothing childish about that. I can swing on a swing in the park, wade and play in the mud by a stream, climb a pole, roll down a grassy hill, listen to any sort of music, etc. I can do all these things and not feel a bit "childish". What is actually childish is being afraid to do such things because of what others might think! It is the immature who are often afraid what others might think. The most childish people I know are those who try to ACT grown up, even though they already ARE grown up. I no longer have to ACT grown up. I'm done ACTING. I now have the freedom to really BE grown up!

I'm 35 right now. I'm in the best shape I've ever been, because I refuse to stop doing the things that I've always done. I can still do 50 pushups because I still do 50 pushups. I can do 20 pullups because I still do them. I play volleyball at a highly competitive level -- and I'm a better and stronger player today than when I was in college. I don't plan on ever "slowing down", but rather I train harder.

I realize that there are health issues that may slow people down. I had a bad knee injury a couple years ago that pretty much stopped me in my tracks. However, I believe in the healing power of the body God has given me, and I did everything I could to promote healing. I went through physical therapy and was diligent to exercise even when it hurt like heck. Three years later I have a better vertical jump than I had before my injury!

When is the last time you ran at a full sprint? I know for a fact that if you sprint at least once a day that you will always be able to sprint very quickly without injury. I know this because I raced a 68 year old man (from Perth, Australia) who ran and sprinted every day. We took off at a full sprint across a field and he poured it on! I discovered (after giving it my all) that he was just as fast as I am! In a distance race he would have easily beat me.

Saying things like, "I'm too old for that" is a great way to quickly shrivel up and grow old. I'm planning to be a formidable 80 year "young" 2 on 2 volleyball player who can do at least 50 pushups...

Goof for you Rock ...

I also prescribe to the "not acting my age" ideal. Even with the recent onslaught of severe health problems, it may slow me down sometimes, but I tryt my darndest to not let it stop me.

I find that laughter keeps me young. Also, my sense of wonderment every time I go on a hike, or see a peregrine swoop by....

Rock: I like your style. :) And yes, what makes people old is their attitudes. I won't be running a race against you, however.

What would it take to bribe you??? ;) :P
Probably not much, I'm embarrassed to say...:P

I get your point, but your "young" body will never have to face the possibility of 10+ years of perimenopause and all the mind addling symptoms that come with it...which leads me to say:

I'm with you, Sharon. And I've also found that my sense of humour is sharper than ever. It keeps me sane (or is that insane?). I laugh a lot these days.

No kidding...:P

I'm not allowed to dance in public anymore, by order of my family. Not just my kids, but my husband, too. They say I remind them of Elaine on Seinfeld. I thought that was pretty low, but then I saw some video of me and I agreed. I don't dance in public. Only when I'm home alone! lol But I sing along with the radio all the time!

I don't want to grow old. I may end up in a wheelchair and living in a nursing home.

Oh wait ...

Very droll, Jason. :P And if it ever happens, you'll probably take to wearing loud shirts, Jason.

Jason? Wearing loud shirts??? Perish the thought. It'll never happen.

You haven't seen too many photos of Jason, then. He loves colourful Hawaiian shirts. (Jason: I'm talking about you, not to you.) :P

Tropical, not Hawaiian. Pffffttttt.

I'd call mine Hawaiian if they were Hawaiian, but they're from Key West, Florida.

sandie

So, they're Floridian, not Hawaiian to you. "Tropical" means the tropical state of Queensland here. Bananas, pineapples, mangoes and cane toads. :P (I've managed to offend all Banana Benders with one expression, I think.) :D

This is a lesson on how to grow old disracefully, folks.

don't worry about it Jason, as long as you don't wear shorts and black socks and shoes with your shirts, it's all good. That's when you know you're old! Or a tourist.

I haven't worn shorts for twenty years. It's always a tropical shirt and black slacks. Today, it's a black shirt with parrots. Specifically, this one:
