Susie Lee Done Fell In Love;
She Planned To Marry Joe
She Was So Happy 'bout It All
She Told Her Pappy So.

Pappy Told Her, Susie Gal,
You'll Have To Find Another.
I'd Just As Soon Yo' Ma Don't Know,
But Joe Is Yo' Half Brother.

So Susie Put Aside Her Joe
And Planned To Marry Will,
But After Telling Pappy This,
He Said, "there's Trouble Still.

You Can't Marry Will, My Gal,
And Pleas E Don't Tell You' Mother,
But Will And Joe, And Several Mo'
I Know Is Yo' Half Brother.

But Mama Knew And Said, My Child,
Just Do What Makes Yo' Happy.
Marry Will Or Marry Joe.
You Ain't No Kin To Pappy.

Haha!! Beka, I love it! :D

Oh, and it helps to read it out loud with the proper accent. Makes it even funnier. :D

The funny thing is that what you've written is an old song, and has nothing to do with Kentucky. I've seen that poem associated with Georgia, Arkansas, and Hillbillies in general, but it's always fun to make fun of Kentucky, isn't it?

Yeah, I've noticed that most of the time Arkansas is more associated with marrying your family than any other state in the South. Funny thing is, I don't know anyone who's married their kin. And I'm from there. But it's still funny though. :D

I just get irritated with stuff like this because it's never ending. Why did Kentucky and Arkansas become the places that were open game to make fun of? Would it have totally been offensive if the poem had said that Kentucky women were Nappy-Headed Hos? Would that have gotten some one fired from a job that they've had for 30 years? Would it have put an entire community of people against the person who said it. Apparently it would have.

People should visit Kentucky and Arkansas before they make fun of it, or even before they post something that someone else sent them. Or at least they should consider that there are REAL people who live in those places who are offended by things like that!

In this world of PC, it's totally okay to make fun of The South, fat people, and Republicans, but anyone else is strictly OFF LIMITS!!!

Watch it Jason! Fat Republicans from Kentucky can tell that joke, but no one else!

Honestly I'm glad this thread hasn't been erased.

This is the main reason that I'm sad that I didn't become a history teacher. I have the degree, but I'm in the music industry. I had plans on becoming a history teacher in a high school in Kentucky. I wanted to help high school students in Kentucky become proud of being Kentuckians, especially when we are constantly the butt of stupid jokes about hillbillies, rednecks, or inbred toothless Republicans.

When I was in high school I really believed that the entire country made fun of Kentuckians for being non shoe-wearing hillbillies. I wear shoes, have a college degree, and I didn't marry my sister. What I didn't know when I was in high school is that this is a regional joke. If you live in New York, people who live in Rhode Island are hillbillies. If you live in Colorado, people who live in Utah are hillbillies. And if you live in Central Kentucky, people from Eastern Kentucky are hillbillies.

That poem really is a song, and that is where I heard it first. I laughed when I first heard it, but it isn't called The Kentucky Love Song. I think the song was recorded by my folk singer friend from Rhode Island (look at her tour schedule), Aubrey Atwater (http://www.atwater-donnelly.com/), but I'm not sure which cd it's on. The last time I talked to Aubrey, I asked her to send me a cd, but I warned her that I was going to steal every song on it because I'm also a performing musician/singer. She said, "that's ok, I learned most of them from Kentucky."

I would have been just as upset if this thread was called Rhode Island Love Poem or Utah Love Poem, etc. It's really not funny.

Interesting. From an outsiders (i.e. nother country) perspective,,whenever we tell jokes along those sort of lines,,,the state that is most often used is Alabama.

Over here its Tasmania. But don't tell anyone

It may just be because I'm from there. My ears usually perk up more whenever I hear anything referring to Arkansas. It's probably a lot more widespread.
