View Full Version : Wire Concept Covers?
I'm not sure if this has been posted before, and if so then just ignore me...
I was doing some searching on the newest social networking site (eg: MySpace) called Virb (http://www.virb.com/izzymd) when I came across the profile (http://www.virb.com/rmd) of a person who had some interesting cover art for a certain band we all know and love.
It looks like preliminary covers or proposals for design that you can check out on his portfolio website (http://rustymitchell.com/design/portfolio.php?category=co ver&project=thirdday&pn=yes). I wonder how seriously any of these designs were considered (if at all) or if these covers are just the product of an avid fan.
If the guys could chime in on this one I'd be curious to hear an official word
...and on a side note, if any of you are interested in joining virb (http://www.virb.com/) just leave a post in this thread and I'll be more than happy to invite you
UPDATE: I was messaging the guy who has the covers on his online portfolio and this is what he had to say.
"I used to work as an in-house designer for Provident Music (Essential and Reunion Records). All but 9 of the 49 covers were cover comps that were either rejected or the project was cancelled. A lot of those rejected comps were from the Provident days. I think between three designers we comped about 125 covers for that Third Day project. I'm not sure that any of them ever made it in front of the band. The design ended up being hired out over the weekend to an outside designer."
How cool. I wonder if any of the band even saw these covers...

Great find, Izzy. These are kind of cool, like works in progress.
Other than the text font, the one with the guy actually walking on the high wire looks kind of familiar. ;)
But yeah, I got to the one with the moose, and just went "What the..." Third Day in Alaska? :D
Thought THIS one was most peculiar though... there's something vaguely Monty Python (or George Orwell) about it.

The tightrope is similar to the final design. What is up with that moose?

What's up Izzy? Glad to see you on the boards :)
We did see all of those covers. I remember the one with the head hanging from the wire drawing particularly "strong" reactions from the band...
We usually will see a couple dozen cover proposals for an album. That will quickly get narrowed down to 6 or 8 and then those will get developed more. For whatever reason, "Wire" was more of a struggle than usual. You'd think it would've been easier since we were 99% sure of the album title before we even went into the studio, but that's how it goes sometimes...

I absolutely love that one, and the first one is GORGEOUS....the final cover for Wire wasn't my favorite, and I think that first one would have made beautiful wallpapers...

Thanks for the band perspective, Mark!

The only Third Day one I like is the one with the head, but it seems a little strong for Third Day's audience. I like the one they settled on. Love the colors especially.
Did you look at the Overflow covers? :D Flying squirrels and jackalopes. I do like the retro Nintendo one, though. That is a visual that would have stuck!
Hey Izzy! How's doctoring? Good I hope!

I was just thinking about you the other day Izzy and how much you helped me thru the struggles of nursing school. Call me if you ever need an office nurse!! LOL!

This particular one was the best of the bunch IMO. The other were okay, but I yesly didn't like that head one.

I can't believe the head cover has finally seen the light of day. I thought the design would have served Nine Inch Nails better than Third Day.
