IMO this song is worth the price of admission. It's raw blues infused southern swamp rock!
Tell me again why we don't have the steel on stage any more...
This is a perfect compromise of the original version and the ROCKfest we got on the WIRE tour.

Oh, I so agree! This performance of this song is awesome! Y'all have to go pre-order now, just so you can hear this version of Blackbird from 1998. Wow!

No, the bootleg one is from the Come Together tour.

am I the only one who doesn't really care for that song??? And yes I have repeatedly listened to it thinking "maybe this time ......"

Oh well ..... you can't please all people all the time

Well, I really like it, but as my granddaddy used to say, If everybody liked the same thing, there wouldn't be enough to go around.

I'm not positive, but I think I was. I can't remember for sure whether '98 or '99 was the year I first saw them live though.

I've loved every version they have done of Blackbird; the original, the edgier LiveWIRE cut, and the acoustic rendition outside the venue in Grande Prairie, TX. ;)

I have to agree. Didn't hear the Grand Prairie, except on video, but any version of Blackbird soounds great to me!

ME TOO!! Wednesday night on the way to church, my husband, my 18 month old son, and I were all jamming out to the LiveWire version of Blackbird. The cars passing us must of thought we were crazy! It was cute... even Nathan, my son, was dancing and bobbing his head. I wish I had my video camera with me at the time.

Blackbird, why you wearing that frown?
Don't you know Jesus loves you and me
and the preacher on T.V. you're putting down

Blackbird, how I love to hear your songs
I could spend all of my time in the shade
of the trees and listen all day long

Chorus:
But you're ever hearing, never understanding
Ever seeing, not perceiving and your heart
has grown callous
You're in a storm and lost you way
Won't you fly to heaven and be saved today

Blackbird, now you're broken your wing
You try to fly high but you know that you
can't go anywhere, you can't do anything

Blackbird, who put you in your cage
Tell me, was it God or was it you
Was it me? I guess it don't matter anyway

Repeat chorus

(Bridge) You say you need a remedy
for the thorn in your pride
I think it's such a tragedy
That you have left Him behind

You say you'd light you candle
But your love light doesn't shine
You say you talk to angels
Well I say it's such a lie

Repeat chorus

Many believe that Blackbird is about fellow Atlanta rock band The Black Crowes. The song is reminiscent of The Black Crowes' style. Also some of the lines reference songs by The Black Crowes. For example, Mac sings You say you talk to angels. One of The Black Crowes' hits was a song titled She Talks to Angels.

The song is basically saying, "I like The Black Crowes' music, but they need Jesus."

yea... the entire bridge is basically black crowes references

thy have songs named "remedy" "thorn in your pride", and one of their biggest hits is a cover of otis redding's "hard to handle", in which the line "let me light your candle" is found....

Whoa, whoa, whoa, there people. We have discussed the meaning of this song excessively (check “The Doctor Is In” thread). This thread is about the live version found on Chronology 1. Let’s stay focused. At least compare the meaning of that version to other versions of the song you have heard. The most obvious are the original album version and the Live Wire version. Keep it on track, folks.

just answering the question. no hi-jack intended.:D

of course, if we are discussing the one that was in the bootlegs section, the crowes talk becomes very relevant again......

I didn't care for Blackbird the first time I heard it. But, over time, it has grown on me and I don't mind it. Not my favorite but I do listen to it. Now, Alien! That is my one of my favorites! I've never heard it live and my hope is that someday, I will.

Love listening to this version!!!

For heavens sakes I thought Thirdday had outdone themselves with the re-mix to "nothing at all." But the live backbird version rocks! Is that a hint of blues at the beggining of the song? Maybe im being cheezy but i thought that CV1 version was far superior to the blackbird version on "Live Wire."

It's been awhile since I've listened to any of their music, but doesn't "Blackbird" pretty much bite it's entire riff/melody from the Crowes "Remedy"?

I absolutely love this version as well! Its definitly one of my favorites! I love the "Live Wire" version and the CV1 version. I don't know if I'll be able to pick between the two as to which is superior!

I'm absolutely loving it. Mac is just so soulful. I love his vocals on this (not that I don't always love his vocals - which is what caught my ear in the first place - but, on this particular song, he's so edgy & bluesy...)

Blackbird is an awesome song no matter how 3D performs it. Each version sets a different mood. Also Consuming fire is such a great song. These songs are like the roots of 3D.

When I was @ Bible College (98-99), my room-mate was really into the song Blackbird. At the time, I wasn't. I didn't know what the song was about, and it didn't appeal to me. But as the years passed, and joining the 3D boards...I've grown to love it. I think ever since the boards have been up & running, Blackbird has been talked about...

I definitely like the CV1 version of Blackbird better, but the part of the Live Wire version where Mac is introducing the band is pretty sweet as well. Combine those elements and I can't even imagine how awesome Blackbird would sound live.
