Is there anyway to download youtube videos?? I want to save this one (http://youtube.com/watch?v=I38OFYNuEcE) to my cpu. I already tried right clicking it and then clicking "save target as..." but it wont let me save it. Do you have to have an account with them or something?

they don't allow saving of their vids
there are a couple of hacks out there to do it, but you have to get something to switch the format, too.

About the only way I could think of doing that is by using some kind of screen capture application, but I don't know of any free ones

I do it a lot. I have found a way to do it, and also found a way to extract audio from the files.
I think it's legal, too, because anytime you view a video on your home PC, you have to, by definition, download it to that PC. They just have been hiding it so you have a hard time finding it, but I say if you find it, it' fair game. As long as you don't distribute it to others.
To download the videos, go to http://javimoya.com/blog/youtube_en.php
The videos are in .flv format, so to play them, you'll need to use a player that plays that format. Media player won't, but that same I linked to has a link to a player.

I was going to mention the way I've been doing it, which is to install the VideoDownloader plug-in for Firefox and just download the YouTube vids in Firefox instead. Turns out it's made by the same person that you just linked to. GMTA!
So plugging in the YouTube link at the top of his page in IE works? Excellent. I've been trying to figure out away to NOT have to keep switching over to Firefox to save YouTube videos, and if his IE converter works on my PC, my life just got MUCH easier. :D
Thanks for the tip.

CinemaForge lite (http://www.download.com/CinemaForgeLite/3000-2169_4-10619425.html?tag=lst-0-2) lets you download videos and convert them. It's pretty user friendly.

you wouldn't happen to have any links for mac programs would you? (i'm looking for one that i wouldn't need another converting program for/another player) i've been trying to find one. question though. say i do download a video, will it be saved to my hard drive. because i tend to back up my hard drive frequently and want to know if it would transfer. but i need a downloading program first. ;) hehe. i'm just curious though.

I found a program that would convert flvs to mpgs, but then I cleaned off the desktop and don't remember which one it was (I tried 3, and only one actually worked for me.)
I'll have to give CinemaForge lite a try.

Handiest piece of software I've seen in ages. If you have the program open, all you need to do is copy the Youtube link, then the program window pops up and asks you where to save it. It'll download and convert in one go. It's very quick as well.

I use FLV Player (free)...
http://www.download.com/FLV-Player/3000-2139_4-10467081.html
...and then drag the movie file from the Temporary Internet Files folder.
Note of caution - some files will have strange names eg. 'FS4g5hJ', so remember to rename them otherwise you will get very confused if you collect lots!
The very first time you click on an FLV file to run it in FLV Player, you may have to direct the file to the location of the FLVPlayer.exe (and remember to tick the box stating 'always run with this application...).
FLV Player only allows the video to played in its original size and x2 - dragging the player to fill the screen sometimes allows 'almost' full screen'.
----------------
There is a cross platform (Win & Mac) FLV player at
http://www.wimpyplayer.com/products/wimpy_standalone_flv_play er.html
(although I have not tried that one, being happy with FLVPlayer).
FLV Player original for Mac...
http://sweb.cityu.edu.hk/50689882/flv_mac.zip
or scroll down to it on the original page...

Edit: and thank you to all the people who posted the other links, much appreciated :)

i think when you convert, you need to use .asf, maybe? i don't have an ipod, but it seems that what it says to use for that.

Is that pretty safe? I've never downloaded something like that, but I desperately want to save some youtube clips. I'm just a bit hesitant downloading software that I don't know anything about.

Yep - hasn't done a bad thing to my laptop at all, plus I'd gladly trust Softpedia as a reliable source of software downloads. If you don't want to download anything, this (http://javimoya.com/blog/youtube_en.php) is a browser based version of the Video Downloader already mentioned in the thread. I find the VDownloader a fair bit faster though.
