You know, we've had this question so many times that I am going to make this thread into a sticky. That way, everyone can answer it once. Then when new folks wander into the forum, they can read everyone's answers and add their own.

My favorite movie of all time is The Philadelphia Story (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0032904/)with Jimmy Stewart, Katherine Hepburn, Cary Grant, and Ruth Hussey! I can see it again and again, because the writing is so clever. It's so funny! :)

I have a lot of favorites and none, if that makes sense. I do have two lesser known favorites, though. One is Shadowlands. The other is called, Miracle at Moreaux.

As for really old b&w movies, I'd have to say, Sargeant York and It's a Wonderful Life.

I also loved Narnia and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

And, even if I didn't already know Rob's favorite movie, I don't think it would have been all that difficult to guess. ;) LOL

Ok, if I may, I'd like to suggest a rule: Only one movie per post. Listing 4 or 5 movies kind of defeats the purpose of answering what your favorite is.

Ok, if I may, I'd like to suggest a rule: Only one movie per post...I may just need to do 4 or 5 posts, then. :p

But in the spirit of trying to keep it to one's absolutely one "favoritest" movie, I'll say, ummm.. probably "Contact" with Jody Foster. The whole thing is good, but that scene where she goes zipping through the wormholes is a real winner. :cool:

I'm always left going "Whoa, what a ride!" by the end of the movie.

I don't argue with your choice, but I do contend with you regarding that last phrase. Certainly, there are other happily ever after stories in the same league. Examples which come to mind are "The Princess Bride" and "Cars".

True, but they all are happy ever after once they end up with the pretty girl, or the Porsche. Shrek on the other hand, ends happily ever after with the ogre. Utterly incomparable by superficial standards.

I really like bourne identity, but I can't watch the second movie, to much camera movement. I had to walk out of the theatre, it gave me a terrible headache. I hate when film directors try to put you in "the action". So I was bummed when I couldn't watch the movie.

I did think all that movement was a distraction. And I also didn't think the second was as good as the first, although I still enjoyed it. Enjoyed it enough to say that I'll definately be in line for Ultimatum.

There are so many movies... It's like having to name your fav. Food...

Plus my fav. movie changes based on my mood...

Ok seriously It used to be Shawshank Redemption... Then I saw "The Godfather".

If I had to pick one movie to stand out above the rest, it would have to be that. It is the only three hour movie I have ever seen where each and every scene was essential to the story telling. Above that, the purpose of the movie itself was to tell a story, not necessarily keep you glued to the edge of your seat, but keep you plugged in and concerned...

I mean Sonny Corleone was a nasty person, yet when he gets swiss cheesed at the toll booth, I am saddened...

I honestly care about these people whom are rotten dirty scoundrels, and even more-so for the sympathetic Michael. The "Good Son" who after the death of Sonny and the utter incompetence of Freedo must change his innocent nature in order to become the new don... and when he does so, he fully emerges in the role by fearlessly taking out each and one of the head of the other families....

Outstanding movie...

I like The Longest Day, and A Bridge Too Far. Much like some of the other films mentioned, these two are part of a series (well, serial history, actually, and both written by John Toland, I believe) These stand out for me because they are not stories, they are history recreated in cinema, and, unlike any of the previously mentioned movies (I believe) these are truly star-studded flicks.

My #2 pick would be Kelly's Heroes.

I agree about the Godfather but I actually rank part two slightly ahead of part one. I love the two stories going on at once with being able to go back and see how young Vito started the "family business" and the contrast it provides to the other story of Michael's continued rise to power. The ending scene with Vito's kids all sitting around at the table and Michael announces he's joining the Marines and Connie meets Carlo for the first time, then Vito comes home and they all run to him except Michael sitting at the table by himself is brilliant, and great fodder for debate and discussion as to just what was being implied.

Breaker Morant is excellent, as is Gallipoli and The Man From Snowy river/Return To Snowy River, to name a few other "down under" -themed gems.

Another incredible film which I sat through beginning to end (bloody near impossible for me!) is Castle In The Sky. It is anime (Japanese animation fir the uninitiated), but it is an incredibly beautiful story and film- possibly the best anime I've ever seen.

My favorite movie of all time is The Great Gatsby with Robert Redford and Mia Farrow. I just love Nick Carraway in that film, played by a young Sam Waterston. I also love A River Runs Through It and Legends of the Fall. I must admit I watched them years ago for the Brad Pitt, but I still love them for the brother's drama (being the mom of two boys). I have to say that my favorite right now is Band of Brothers. That is if mini-series' count.

One of the great things about it aside, from the action, is how one can get attached to the characters. It is a great film that shows great comadrie between the soldiers

One of my alltime favorites is The Wind that Shakes the Barley. I like it because I love all things Irish(except for the Guinness as I dont drink) uh..............how shall I put this democratically........... .........lets just say Im not to fond of the british occupation and Im rooting for the "hometeam" and lets leave it at that as I get a look of suprise when I tell people where my political and military leanings are as far as the Troubles are concerned.

here is the link to the movie on IMDB

My hubby said it is! I would say it's half and half! The war bits certainly aren't girlie in the least. they should satisfy your blood lust (it's not as gory as Band of Brothers).
Check it out - you'll need your tissues I can guarantee it!

I think I have already replied to this thread a long while ago - so my tastes may have changed just a little:
Current list of favourites -
* Shawshank redemption
* The green mile
* The Notebook
* Anne of Green Gables Series ( though i really don't care much for the final movie)
* Anything Jane Austin - Particularly Emma with Colin Firth - yum and Pride and Prejudice
* Dirty Dancing
Hmmm, and probably loads more, but these are some I would either hire over and over or own.

It's the same movie haha, only Heath isn't in the entire thing, so I consider Mel to be the main character...

I cry every time I watch I Am Sam. I also really enjoy the music in it. Rufus Wainwright did a fantastic cover of Across the Universe, and Eddie Veder's You've Got To Hide Your Love Away is the best version of that song I've ever heard.

If you know anything about the Beatles, then that movie will make a lot more sense. I had one friend who knew nothing about the band, so she had to keep asking me the significance of certain parts.

saw the movie The Swing Vote yesterday and i was dissapointed in unnecessary language but overall it was somewhat funny. and if you have one of those things for your tvs that changes what they say then the movie would be just fine.

saw Appaloosa back when it was in theater and again today, pretty good. has violence so not for kids but if you're a fan of westerns then i'd recommend it.
