CD Scratched....Need Advice!!

I have a CD that is scratched...what is the best way to repair it?


It's disc 2 from the "Elvis Presley--The King Of Rock & Roll: The Complete 50s Masters" box set and I don't wanna have to buy a whole new box set for just one CD...any advice??

The only thing I can think of is toothpaste, just plain toothpaste. I think if you put a little bit on rag and rub it gently from the inside straight out to the edge, you should be able to buff the scratch out. Just don't rub with any sort of circular motion, just straight out from the inside.

Of course, I've never tried this myself, but it might help. :)

I got it fixed...and I found the perfect remedy for scratched CDs....BRASSO!!! A little dab of that stuff works wonders!!

And as always when cleaning any surface that is easily scratchable, use either a lint-free cloth, lens cleaning tissue, or cotton pads. Never use any other cloth, because small particles stuck in the cloth can do more damage to the surface. And since the CD now works, it's probably a great idea to back it up by burning a copy :)

Right about now, I'm feeling really silly for buying some stuff to remove scratches at the kiosk in the mall. :o Especially since I've never bothered to open it to see if it works. :p

What about DVDs?? Could you do the same thing?? I have a DVD that has scratches and it needs fixing, would you need the same methods to fix it??

Yeah - it's the same basic problem; scratches on the plastic keeping the LASER from properly reading the recording through it. The differences are primarily in how small the pits/lands are that are used to store the data, not in the basic principles of operation. Scratches affect both in the same manner.
