So we're coming up on 2007--time for those New Year resolutions! I surely can't be the only one on here with a desire to lose weight, right??

Well, I remembered we did a weight-loss challenge a few summers ago, and while I didn't keep it up, I remember some did. I'd love to get something like that started again.

If you'd like to join in and post weekly updates and get encouragement, just come on and do it! To make it easier, here's a few things you might in your first post:

Name: (We might know this already but hey, why not?)
Age: (Purely optional! This might help if there's someone your age who wants an encouragement buddy)
Weight loss goal: (If applicable)
Other health goals:
Worst temptation:
Best motivation: (Don't knock anyone's motivation!)
Secret weapon:

I'll go ahead and post mine:
Name: Sarah
Age: 18
Weight loss goal: I'd like to see steady loss over this next semester, probably 15 lbs.
Other health goals: I'd like to exercise at least 20 minutes, 3 times a week, and only eat dessert once a week and on weekends. I'd also like to cut back on the sweet tea.
Worst temptation: Sweet tea, processed foods. SNACKING!
Best motivation: If I'm mad I'm more likely to exercise. I really haven't found a wonderful motivation yet...still searching.
Secret weapon: Denise Austin videos

If no one wants to do it then the thread will die, plain and simple. I'm not going to keep bumping it up...but I hope you'll join in! Even if your goal is to maintain the weight you're at, still post!
-Sarah

(I put this in here because if I remember correctly the last weight loss challenge we had was in here. If y'all want to move it, you can)

However folks want to do it...we could pick a day of the week to do updates, or we could pick a day of the month, or just do it whenever we want to...anyone got any strong opinions??

Salome

Not a strong one, but maybe every Saturday people can log what they've done or didn't do, and what they hope to improve on during the next week.

Sarah: Vegetables are a source of good carbs, and they're good for you too. Cut out the potatoes and eat the other vegies. Eliminate or cut down on the bread, rice and pastas.

I lose weight when I do this, and feel healthy, too.

Hi Sarah

"Good" carbs to eat are - brown rice, sweet potato. One of the detox diets I went on said white potatoes are still okay, but to alternate having brown rice one night and potatoes the next night.

I have started cutting carbs by having fruit in the morning for breakfast instead of toast. I thought it would be hard to get used to, but so far, so good :)

Bless ya

Real simple carb primer: Call it, if you will, "Nurse BettyLu's Guide to carb consumption that you can carry around in your head". Think "Whole Real Foods". The idea is, the farther man takes a food substance from the way God made it, the worse it is. For instance: A nice juicy organic apple=good. Applesauce=not as good. Apple juice=a little worse. Applejacks=not food. Really, if people would stay away from white flour, refined sugar and hydrogenated fats, they would live longer, healthier lives. Now somebody drag me down off my soapbox before I start preaching about colon care.

For those who want to, www.tickerfactory.com has a custom-ticker program where you can make your own ticker and as you lose weight, it will automatically update. You can either set it so it lists your weight, or simply how much weight you want to lose. You pick the background and the slider...that ticker is mighty powerful motivation! Here's mine:

Another thing to remember about carbs ..... we as a society eat WAY TOO MANY!!!! We are supposed to be getting 50 grams of protein a day. Instead we get about 50+ grams of carbs a day, in the form of refined and over processed goods. When you eat the carbs they are converted to sugars which we definitely don't need more of

NurseBettyLu

True. We, as a society, eat too much PERIOD. There are some studies out that suggest a reduction in caloric intake in general may possibly lead to longer lifespans. Food for thought, so to speak. Also, some things are so bad they need to be avoided altogether, especially if the goal is weight loss. Corn and potatoes are used to--guess what?--fatten livestock for market! 'Nuff said.

I was wondering, do you think it would be valuable to report honestly anything that we eat that we shouldn't - like my hot chips, snickers and cake today!?

I just feel that if I have to admit to you all that I've pigged out on something I shouldn't then I might be more likely not to do it in future - just an idea.

Ok, 'fess up time. As much as I have learned about food, this is a little embarrassing. Seems as I have fallen off the wagon rather badly. You see, I got all this overtime, which is nice in a way because my ends come closer to meeting every month. And junk, if nothing else, is awfully convenient. But I feel LOUSY. Not sure how to post my goals since I'm not out to lose weight(if it happens it happens, I won't complain). When I eat right and exercise I feel like I can lick the world, and I'd like that back. So it's back to South Beach as of tomorrow. That, and walking in the cemetary. Great way to exercise, BTW. Not a lot of traffic to deal with, and people tend to leave you alone. You can get some good spiritual work done at the same time. Oh, and let's not forget to pray for each other on this. No Krispy Kreme formed against us shall prosper(sorry 'bout the paraphrase there)!

If I may .....

One thing I have learned is that it's so much more than a diet. You have to be ready to make a lifestyle change. And you know what?? Every once in a great while a Krispy Kreme ain't gonna kill ya. Now if you eat most of the box then yes.......

So go when the light is on instead. ONE is free AND warm. Yummmmm.

Oh, and drink water. Lots of water. I'm getting excited. Okay, that might be a little exaggerated. But I know the encouragement received here will definately help. Especially when it comes to eating healthier.

May I take a minute for a PSA? :p I'm a subscriber to Flylady.net. A free website that helps in my quest for a clean and organized and peaceful home. Well there is help for those trying to lose weight and it is all about lifestyle. Their new book is called Body Clutter. It is also listed on Amazon. I haven't read it, but keep reading good reports on it.

And a place I buy alot of my exercise videos is CollageVideo.com. Now there are no sales and I've yet to see a free shipping promotion, but the website is set up where you can view a 60 second summary of each video and also a place for people to go and give their review of the videos. They do an excellent job of breaking down the video into time segments, ie warm-up, upper body toning, ab work, cool down, etc. And also letting you know if it is a good video for beginner, intermediate or advanced, and whether it is high impact or low impact. There is a good tool to use to help you narrow down your search based on your personal preference.

And now back to our regularly scheduled program......

So as for a way to update--since everyone's goals are so varied, there won't be a set 'update' form to use...

Also, some (like myself) might not want their weight blasted all over the internet--that's ok! Just remember what your start weight is, and then every week say how much it is off of that, for example:

Weight change this week:+1 lb
Total weight change this year:-5 lbs.

(Or you just could list your weight change that week, then the first week of the month post your total--however you want to do it.

A fun way to do it might be to post what you did good that past week, and what you need to work on. Feel free to post as detailed or as vague as you want--this thread is for you!!

Hope that might help for those wondering how we might post the updates.
-Sarah

One thing I just did is decided that money I would've spent on unhealthy food I'll spend elsewhere. So I'm now sponsoring a 7-year-old boy from Uganda named Tadeo. It will cost $35/month as he is a HopeChild, meaning his community is affected by HIV/AIDS and the $5 extra goes towards AIDS prevention and things like that.

If you're interested in doing something similar:

Cool idea, Jason. I do something similar when I give up soft drinks for Lent. Yeah, I drink a LOT of soft drinks. As for an update, today really has been my first day back on the program, but I do have a couple of observations. First, it costs a lot more to crawl back on the wagon than it does to stay there in the first place. $92 at Wal-Mart, $33 at Jimmy Lowe's (finest produce in Mobile county), and $60 at The Health Hut (but that included two books: What Would Jesus Eat? and None of These Diseases)! Second, no sugar rush in the world is as good as the cravings are bad. Alas, this too shall pass. I am determined.

I had to take a break to clear all the smoke out of my house! Unfortunate fireplace incident. I also started drinking Green Tea which really is not bad if you get the diet citrus flavor so, I'm getting there. :D

actually, it is just a sign of how much your weight fluctuates!!! the day i originally weighed myself was right after a family christmas, and yesterday, i had slept all day because i have come down with a cold, so i've been sticking with the lighter meals. . . lol!

so, i'm sure the weight will come back up. but that is about where my weight fluctuates between, so it's not an unaccurate representation. . .

I added a time line to my goal since I was reminded that without a time line a goal is only a dream.

Also, I forgot to mention my other secret weapon. It's Weight Watchers chocolate cupcakes. Simply take any boxed chocolate cake mix and in place of the water, oil and egg substitute 12 oz. of Diet Coke. Mix and portion into 24 paper muffin cups in a muffin pan and bake as directed. Each cupcake is 1 point and they will keep in an airtight container for several days. They are very good and really quite satisfying but remember to share so you won't be tempted to eat them all yourself.

That's a huge amount of weight to lose in 3 months...if you were obese it might not be unreasonable, but to lose that much weight in 3 months at your current weight seems dangerous...everything I've read talks about how you need to take it slow...

Thank you for the concern. I have consulted my doctor and a nutritionalist and have been told by both that the I can safely lose 2-3 lbs. per week with proper nutrition and exercise. This is in line with what I have researched and experienced myself. I am only 5' 7" (well actually closer to 5' 6", I just round up cause it sounds better) and the current BMI charts put my ideal weight in the 145-155 range. My goal weight is 5-10 lbs. over my ideal weight. I can live with that.

FYI: Regardless of wether you are 20 lbs. or 200 lbs. overweight the maximum amount of fat you can burn/lose in a week is 3 lbs. If you are losing more than that you are in fact "burning" muscle tissue which results in actually lowering your body's ability to burn fat.

So I agree a slow burn is actaully much better for sustaining weight lose. I'm just a little competative, though, so I'm going for the max (or near to it) that I can lose safely.

Breakfast: spoonful meusli with mixed seeds, dried apricots, goji berries (great for energy) and soy milk.

Weight Loss: 1.2 kg (or roughly 2.5 pounds)
Total Weight Loss: as above

Mine is mostly due to a detox diet I am doing. (Very safely, no pills - just plenty of fruit, salad, vegies, nuts/legumes and either potato or brown rice, taking vitamin supplements and drinking gallons of water!!! Have only been on it since Sunday, so hopefully will improve loss next week.

Only exercised a couple of times though, need to increase that.

Well let's see, last week I continued sleeping in and finished off my second jar of Nutella since I received 5 of them for Christmas. :o Thankfully, I have found one other person in this family of mine that enjoys the stuff also, so at least I know that I'm not the only one responsible for the whole 2 jars. I'm also thankful that low-rise pants are still in fashion. It's the ONLY reason I haven't had to go out and buy a bigger size. Excellent Teresa!! When I started working out in earnest a few years ago, I decided not to go the way of the scale. I found it more discouraging and I'll tell you why. After working out reguarly for I'd say about a year, my weight was probably 5 MAYBE 10 pounds (and that would be a stretch) less than when I started, however I had gone from wearing a size 10/12 pant to a size 4/6. It's all about redistributing the inches!! haha! :D

Another observation about dieting: When you eat nothing but junk for months on end, you forget how to use your good knives. I opened up my right index finger to the bone, had to be carted off to the emergency room, and wound up getting six stitches and a stern lecture on proper diet AND knife safety. Other than that, pretty decent week. Ate well exept for a TEENSY piece of cake at my auntie's birthday party (she's ninety! and no signs of slowing down). Walked twice, and am shooting for three times this week.

I have a Golden retriever. I was buying a large bag of Purina at Wal-Mart and was in line to check out. A woman behind me asked if I had a dog? (DUH!)

On impulse, I told her that no, I didn't have a dog, and that I was starting the Purina Diet again. Although I probably shouldn't, because I'd ended up in the hospital last time, but that I'd lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms.

I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that the way that it works is to load your pants pockets with Purina nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry and that the food is nutritionally complete so I was going to try it again. (I have to mention here that practically everyone in the line was by now enthralled with my story.)

Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care because the dog food poisoned me. I told her no; I stepped off a curb to sniff an Irish Setter's butt and a car hit us both.

I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart attack, he was laughing so hard!

Happy Dieting!!!

Thanks!! Yep that's about 2 pounds, 500g is a bit less than a pound (or is it more!). In Aus, prior to 1962 (I think it was - I wasn't around then!), we worked in pounds and ounces and imperial measures - so the older Aussies around the place don't have any trouble speaking in either - not me though, I came along a long time after that!

The current formula for goody powder is a combination of aspirin, acetomenophen, and a hefty dose of caffeine. Evil nasty but effective as a painkiller and handy-dandy keepawaker. I only lost 1 pound this week......but lost 1/4 inch off bust, 1/2 inch off waist, 1/4 inch off hips and nothing off my thigh. (I'm only measuring my right thigh......hoping that my left will have the sense to keep up! ;) )

I haven't heard of the Turbo Jam workout.

From what I understand of it, Turbo Jam is a mixture of kick boxing and dance moves. Being that I danced when younger I think it would be something I would enjoy more then just kick boxing.

Tuesday update:
As of Sunday morning I gained about 4lbs back
Gotta love a stressful work week huh?

New plan, exercise at least an hour to an hour and a half a day.

It is okay, our weight can fluctuate 5 - 10 lbs daily. Lay off the salt and pre-prepared meals unless you know you ate too much of the wrong things.

I'm doing the Beverley Callard chiselling workout, "Rapid Results", which involves some dance moves and free weights.
The music is a bit dated, men's outfits a bit tacky and I still need more cardio - but it is amazing for instant and quick results.
I've only done it twice - but there is definitely a difference in my shape!

My eating is still o.k. apart from a very small bowl of ice cream yesterday. :(

This thread is really keeping me on track - I would have eaten more last night, but I knew I'd have to own up here. This accountability is good.

Been walking a bit this week, not as much as I'd like, but things have been hectic - weight loss about 1/2kg.
Next week I'll be in Sydney (yes a certain concert experience) and I plan on doing quite a bit of walking- though I'll be on holidays - so I may give in and be a bit naughty - here's hoping the walking balances the food out!!

I lost 3lbs last week and my goal to build up my work out time is going smoothly...slowly but smoothly none the less :)

A friend had me join up with sparkpeople.com which I'm liking a lot. It helps you better track your intake of calories as well as how many your burn throughout the day.

Not a good week last week. Didn't work out at all. Needed the energy to take care of my little boy who had bronchitis. And then between my husband and I, we managed to make a pan of rice krispie treats AND brownies within a day of each other. BAD BAD BAD (but tastes so good good good).

I worked out yesterday, and I'm feeling it today!! WHOO-HOO. That makes me feel good.

I'm signing up a little late but at least I'm finally doing something about the weight gain.

Name: Mary Beth
Age: 44
Weight loss goal: 30 lbs
Other Health Goals: feeling more active and better about myself
Worst Temptation: pizza and anything chocolate
Best Motivation: Making sure a 10 yr old does not beat me in a half-marathon
Secret weapon: running, treadclimber, elliptical machine

My niece challenged me and my husband to a half-marathon (13.1 miles) in December. I've never run more than 6 miles before. At least she's given us 10 months to get ready. Her 10 yr old daughter runs 1 mile with her every night and she wants to run in the marathon. I don't want her to beat me. Isn't that bad?
I started running again on Sunday. It's been quite a while since I went running. I jogged 4 miles and I can still feel the pain in my thighs. Last night, I went on the treadmill. The pain is easing up for now. I plan on building up my stamina running every other day if posible. Good luck to everyone in their challenges. mb

NBL,

Do you have any exercise dvd's? I've got plenty of Tae Bo tapes, yoga, pilates, Crunch exercise tapes/dvd's, and boot camp tapes. Also, got a jump rope just in case. How about getting a cheap treadmill or elliptical machine? I'd rather be outside walking or jogging but the rest of the time, I'll use the indoor machines or dvd's. Hope that helps to motivate you. It also helps to have someone to do these things with if possible. My hubby will jog with me when possible. Good luck.

The toe I just keep taped and wear good running shoes. I don't jog very fast. I just want to be able to jog for the half-marathon in Dec. mb

Thanks...you know, I think the problem doesn't lie so much in a lack of options as it does in a lack of commitment. In other words, I'm LAZY. I'm a big lady, and I have no illusion of ever being a runway model. I mean if I lost down to my naked bones, I'd still be 5'10", a size 11 shoe and a size 9 glove. But I could be healthier. And that ain't gonna happen unless I get up off my rusty butt. I'll get my act together and post an update soon. My eating is going well. Okay, I'm getting in on this really late, but I want to lose, too. In the past year and 1/2 I've lost 70 lbs. I need to lose another 15 to get to my target weight.

age: 43
current weight: 140
goal weight: 125
weakness: popcorn with LOTS of butter...real butter!
motivation: I've been doing too well to quit now

The way I lost the first 70 lbs. was portion control. That, and the side effect of my ADD medicine made me not hungry AT ALL! I had to force myself to eat. HOWEVER, Last week I worked out 5 mornings -- which is my goal, so I'm proud of that. And things are looking good for this week. It helps that in Tuesday's mail came two new exercise dvd's: Jari Love's Get Ripped to the Core and Amy Bento's Kickbox Xtreme. Awesome work outs.

p.s. I've mentioned before CollageVideo.com. It's where I purchase a majority of my work out dvd's. It's very informative with clips of each video and reviews by customers on most.
