No ridicolus Hair Fluff allowed.

Anyone remember these bands, or were raised up on these bands?

This is what the skateboarders were listening to in the 80's. This was skateboarding music when skateboarding first became popular in the early to mid 80's.

I am talking about stuff like: early TestAmenT, early MegadetH, early MetallicA, AnTHRaX, early sLaYeR, early aNNihilAtor, early KreatoR, and early EXODUS.

Also: HellOweeN, Iron Maiden, Queensryche, early Virgin Steele, early ManOwaR, Metal Church, Fates Warning, Crimson Glory, SavaTage, Scorpions, very early Blind_GuardiaN, Yngwie J. Malmsteen, heavier stuff from
J. Priest, heavier stuff from SKID ROW, heavier stuff from TESLA, DoKKen,
Pretty Maids, Dangerous Toys, Junkyard, very early Stratovarius, Racer X, and when Dream-TheateR went by their early club and gig band name of Majesty.

I totally forgot about N.ew W.ave O.f B.ritish M.etal bands / NWOBM bands: This was HUGE in England in the very late 70's and early 80's.

Take your pick:

Angelwitch,
Diamond Head,
very early Def Leppard,
Demon,
early Iron Maiden *(who, by the way, came out in 1975 as a band, not 1980. 1980 is when they got their first record deal. 1975 is when Steve Harris formed the band and did small club and bars and resturants gigs in London. Yeah, the band has been around for 30 years).*
J. Priest,
Samson,
Saxon.

Come on, I know that there has to be people here who watched Headbanger's Ball on MTV every Saturday night at 11 p.m. who know of these bands.

Almost everyone of these bands were on that show at one time or another.

This was during a time when CD covers had works of art (examples of this: "Powerslave" CD cover and "Somewhere In Time" CD cover from Maiden or "Screaming for Vengeance" CD cover from J. Priest) on them instead of some cheap PhotoShop work done in 2 minutes thrown on a CD cover like is done now these days.

Also during a time when the CD names were: "Among the Living", "Rust in Peace", "Practice what you Preach", "Bonded by Blood", "Mechincal Renassonance", "Fistfull of Metal", "Persistance of Time", "The Legacy", "Keeper of the 7 Keys", "Piece of Mind", "Rage for Order", "Awakening the Guardian", "Warriors of the World", "Transcendence", "Battleions of Fear", "Blackout", "Future World", and "Hellacious Acres". (Back during a time when bands thought out what they were going to do on a new release and made plans for it and thought it all out to the fine detail, and got the music to fit and flow with the concept of the new release itself instead what bands do now these days).

I, personally, was raised up on Iron Maiden and SKID ROW.

Been listening to Maiden for 20 years now since 1986 when I was in 5th Grade.

Got hooked on SKID ROW in 1988, and I loved the "Slave to the Grind" CD from them too in 1991. "Subhuman Race" CD from them was really good too in 1995.

I was/am a metalhead. I was all about those bands. Motley Crue was a favorite. I liked Skid Row a lot until they got rid of Sebastian Bach and then I was like uhhh...

Tesla, Maiden, Queensryche, Faith no more, Twisted Sister, Anthrax (I always wanted a gotee like Scott Ian!) etc...

I've even enjoyed some current metal...Killswitch Engage, As I lay dying etc.

Motley Crue was at times were total 80's Metal, but at times, they were total Hair-Fluff too.

Songs like: "Live Wire", "Too Fast for Love title song", "Toast of the Town", "Public Enemy # 1", "Looks that Kill", "Red Hot", "Too Young to Fall in Love", "Louder than Hell", "Use it or Lose it", "Wild Side", "Dr. Feelgood title song", "KICKSTART MY HEART" (my all-time favorite Crue song), "Rattlesnake Shake", "Same Ol' Situation" were all 80's Metal songs.

Songs like: "Home Sweet Home", "Without you", a song or 2 on Girls, Girls, Girls CD, most of the songs on Theater of Pain CD, "Going on with the Show", "Girl don't Go Away Mad but Just Go Away", "Time for Change" were all Hair Fluff songs.

Sadly, people think that SKID ROW were Hair Fluff, when actually they were anything but.

Take a listen to the "Slave to the Grind" CD or "Subhuman Race" CD from them. That is in no way Hair Fluff at all. That is almost Thrash Metal like PanterA.

People get the idea that SKID ROW is Hair Fluff b/c of 1 song from them that was on the "Self-Titled" CD from them that was popular and commerical that had a little bit of acoustic playing in it "I Remember you". Other than that, this band in no way is Hair Fluff, and neither is the "Self-Titled" CD from them Hair Fluff either.

Take a listen to "Piece of Me" or "Big Guns" or "Midnight Tornado" on that CD and tell me if that is Hair Fluff. That is out-right 80's Metal.

Also, SKID ROW is not SKID ROW without Sebastian Bach. Yeah, Rachel Bolan and Dave Snake Sabo wrote all the songs, but Sebastian put the "umph" in the music that the other guys were writting.

Another thing about SKID ROW I loved was how they had in-your-face lyrics that talked about how hard life can be, and dealing with real issues, instead of some cheap lyrics crap dealing with how many women you can knock up that all the Hair Fluff bands dealt with.

Dangerous Toys and Junkyard were the copy-cat bands of SKID ROW, and both bands were very awesome, but also very ignored.

I still think that Junkyard could have been the next Guns 'N Roses, but never were.

Junkyard could have been huge if promoted right. Same with DoKKen.

80's Metal never went away.

80's Metal still lives on, but it just is not here in The U.S.

Europeian bands caught on to 80's music in the 90's and 2000's.

I can think of many many many bands from Europe that came out with CDs recently that have a definite 80's Metal sound to them.

Take your pick. All these bands are awesome and worth checking out:

HellOweeN
Gamma-Ray
Masterplan
Sonta Articia
Domain
EdGuy
Freedom Call
Lost Horizon
Dragonforce
Rhapsody
Blind_GuardiaN
Stratovarius
Dark Moor
White Skull
Zandelle
Cryonic Temple
Thy Majestie
Secret Sphere
Mago de Oz
Skylark
Kaledon

There are many many more than that, but those are the ones I know right off hand.

Many of the bands listed are here for soundfiles. Awesome awesome music too: http://www.limb-music.de/cgi-bin/limb.cgi?page=downloads

Check out from that list on that website: Rhapsody, Abraxas, Black Majesty, Dungeon, Domain, Galloglass, Magic Kingdom, Cryonic Temple, Double Dealer, Human Fortress, ORATORY (awesome awesome awesome band right there), Pagan's Mind, Wizard, and Zandelle.

Those first 3 OZZY CDs are very good.

"Blizzard of Oz", "Diary of a Madman", and "Tribute".

Randy was an awesome guitarist.

But also take a listen to the late Criss Olivia from early SavaTage. His guitar shredding is through the roof!! Everything from "Sirens" CD up to "Edge of Thorns" CD from them. AWESOME guitar playing skills.

Criss Olivia died in a car crash in Florida when he was going to Rock Festival. A drunk driver slammed into his car and Criss died on the scene. That was back in 1991 I think.

Moscow Peace Festival in 1989. Yep, I remember.

Scorpions and OZZY were the headliners at that concert. Everyone turned out to see those 2 bands, but had to wait till later in the afternoon after watching a ton of Hair Fluff bands.

I am surprised Maiden wasn't there. They were and still are HUGE and MASSIVE in Europe.

Maiden has their own festivals. Check out Donnington Festival concert in 1988 that SKID ROW also opened up for during Maiden's "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son" tour.

SKID ROW, Scorpions, and OZZY were the best bands of that whole festival.

Not quite correct bud, Bon Jovi was the headliner. In Ozzy's life documentary, they show/explain how everyone was arguing over the billing, but Ozzy said, just let me know when I am going on....

Maiden Rocks and still does....Brave New World is one of my favorite CDs....

Yeah, check out http://www.amazon.com. Go to the little scroll down menu: Go to Music: Type in whatever band name you want.

Any band from Cradle of Filth to Elvis or Michael W. Smith are on there. (That's something you won't see everyday. Cradle of Filth and Michael W. Smith in the same sentence).

It will come up. A lot of rare impossible to find CDs are on that website.

Look in the corner when the CD pops up on the screen to where it says: Used CDs starting at so-and-so price. You can get a $30 dollar CD on there for about $14 dollars or cheaper used.

Yep, Ricki Ractman days of Headbanger's Ball. I remember them very good.

The man got paid to hang out with MegadetH and AnTHRaX and other Metal bands at the time. What kids would have done anything to have the chance to do, he was doing every day.

I know with the new Headbanger's Ball on MTV2, Dimebag Darrell from PanterA was on there almost all the time until he died.

Dave Mustaine from MegadetH has been on the new Headbanger's Ball show lately as well.

I pretty much grew up on 80s Metal ranging from the classical stuff like Saxon or Iron Maiden to extreme Thrash Metal like Celtic Frost or even Kreator!

Nowadays I have a much more open mind when it comes to music, but I have to admit that I still prefer old school Heavy/Thrash Heavy Metal. So yeah, you can prolly say that Third Day is not exactly a typical representative for my musical preferences, but so what? They make some great music after all!

But back to Metal and a recommendation. ;)
First of all, I don't know how much the Metalfans HERE are aquainted with Trivium, but if you like old school Metallica (Master of Puppets) then you may want to check them out! Seriously, it is surprising to see that such a young band like Trivium is already so mature in their musical develoment and to be honest, I expect them to become bigger and bigger over the years!

Anyway, here are some pics from them that I took at a gig. :)

Yep, I know of Trivium.

They have opened up for Maiden a few times recently.

I think they are one of either Bruce's or Steve's favorite bands, and that's why Maiden keeps getting them to open up for them.

In Poland about a year or 2 ago, Nightwish opened up for Maiden as well.

Now that would have been a concert to have seen!!!

When Nightwish was still together and opening up for Maiden.

My 1st and 3rd favorite bands about a year ago.

It really would have been nice if all 3 of my favorite bands about a year ago had all played at that same concert in Poland. Maiden, Blind_GuardiaN, and Nightwish.

That has since changed since Blind_GuardiaN made a mediocre CD of "A Twist in the Myth" CD and they got a new drummer, and since Nightwish broke up.

Now my 2nd and 3rd favorite bands are TestAmenT and MegadetH.

2 bands that you can't go wrong with.

Me me me....

Now I did like the hair fluff bands too but Scorpions was (and still is...that cd stays in my car!) my favorite. Loved Skid Row....as Zach said only with Sebastian though. Saw Motley Crue twice. I liked Iron Maiden but could never get into Judas Priest (they were my boyfriend's favorite). Dokken rocked and still do...I still listen to them.
Spent many a weekend watching Headbanger's ball!!!

I'm sure that you remember the incident at the Ozzfest show in San Bernardino where Sharon Osbourne had paid people to throw eggs and loads of other stuff at Maiden just because she had a problem with the singer? Well, Trivium played at Ozzfest too and they picked their side the next day when they were all wearing Iron Maiden t-shirts when they played! Given the fact that Sharon Osbourne is a very influential person one must say that this was very brave from Trivium and I am sure that this played a role too when Maiden picked them as their support act.

I didn't put up with it, and I told a moderator on that other message board that I was on at the time about the insults and the hate speech going on there, and the moderator booted them off.

That is cool that Trivium went out of their way to support Maiden and to go against their tour sponser. Up the Irons!!

Another thing that *I* find so intriguing is the fact the feeling of togetherness you can experience at small club gigs! Really, it is almost unbelievable when you think about it! There may be a brutal Thrash Metal band on stage, the audience might be moshing like crazy but there is still a certain positive vibe in the air and you can be sure that people WILL help you if something should happen to you after all!

You know, a friend of mine used to work as a bouncer at a smaller club over here and he said that Metal gigs are usually very easy going for the security. People may rock out like crazy, but hardly anybody is really intended on causing trouble which makes it easy for the security to handle the crowd.

D.D./Lonewolf, man that is so true, especially at Thrash Metal concerts like: TestAmenT, MegadetH, or ICED EARTH concerts.

Some really cool people go to those types of concerts. They thrash around and do some moshing, but they are not out to get you and they won't hurt you, and if something did happen, they would see to it that you get some help.

The security at Thrash Metal concerts are good too. People thrashing around and thrashing it up and headbanging, but no psychos come to cause trouble or stir crap up there.

Watch the crowd in concert shows like "Rude Awakening" DVD from MegadetH or "Live in London" DVD from TestAmenT, and notice how cool the crowd is.

SirMax: I was thinking about this today:

If you want to get more SCORPIONS stuff, try for greatest hits stuff:

1. Box of Scorpions 3-CD box set. It is not cheap. It is about $30 bucks.

2. Scorpions "Gold" 2-CD set.

3. Deadly Sting - The Mercury Years 2-CD set.

4. Best of Ballads and Rockers.

Those are the best greatest hits CDs. Keep in mind that this band has been around for about 40 years since the early 70's. The Box of Scorpions 3-CD set has their greatest hits from their early 70's Metal days that hardly anyone knows about when Uli Roth Jon was in the band. It also has their greatest hits of their 80's stuff and their 90's stuff.

If you want to get their best original CDs, check out:

1. "Love at First Sting" CD.
2. "Blackout" CD.
3. "Crazy World" CD.
4. "World Wide Live" concert CD.
5. "Face the Heat" CD.
6. "Unbreakable" CD.

The band is coming out with a new CD later this year as well. This band is still around. There are rumors that they will play OzzFest this year as well. Which is odd, b/c does Scorpions really fit in with Nu-Metal / Fake Metal bands?

This band has been around since about 1971 or 1972, and still are making CDs even today.

Their last CD "Unbreakable" came out in 2005.

I think if anyone is going to listen to 1 song from SCORPIONS, I would say check out either:

1. Send me an Angel.
2. Coming Home.
3. The Same Thrill.
4. Blackout title song.

12. Dynamite.
13. Still Loving you.

On a different point: I found out about the 3rd awesome Canadaian Rock band today.

1. RUSH.

2. ANNihilAtoR.

3. New Christian Power Metal band called: Dream Quest. (No, not the Sega video game system from the late 90's). They only have 2 CDs. I didn't know anything about this band until today.

Their first CD is called "The Release". Their 2nd CD is called: "Centralia".

Motley Crue
Iron Maiden
Judas Priet
Rush
Ozzie...RR FAN...Revelation Mother Earth
Exodus
Nugent
Metallica

Remember them all....not a big fan...only went to see Rush and Ozzie in concert...and Nugent, I think he wore a tarzan suit on stage if I remember correctly...(of course)...saw Ozzie right before Randy died...he ate the head off a bat and spit it into the crowd...thank God I wasn't front stage....I sat in the seats....

Also saw KISS....and Gene Simmons wore his 1976 costume...with the dragon boots with red ruby eyes...how in the world they ever walked ran and jumped around on stage for 2 hours in the heat of those lights and those costumes I will never know...Ace Frehley was my fav...

I had a good friend that was into all this music and he had a band they played alot of it...so they entered a talent show in high school...and were disqualified for being too loud!

I might go and see Arch Enemy live this December. I'd still go because of Trivium but I'm also curious for Arch Enemy. Especially the fact that they are fronted by a woman makes me curious. There are not many women in Death Metal bands after all.

I loved metal in HS - along with country. Strange combo, eh?

I wasn't big on the REAL heavy stuff ... but I'm a fan of:

SKID ROW
TESLA
Def Leppard
Ratt
Guns N Roses

Not so much anymore, because the whole music scene surrounding these groups doesn't sit as well with me as it used to. But I have fond memories of it.

Def Leppard- Produced two of the greatest rock albums of all time

Motley Crue

Ozzy w/Randy Rhoads- An incredible lineup and time for metal Randy Rhoades talent grows by leaps and bounds. What a tragedy it was for him to die at age 21, two yrs into his tenure with Ozzy

Rush- Prog pioneers

Yes- 90125 abd Big Generator

Guns and Roses- Could have been the greatest band of all time. Axle Rose's attitude problem causes its demise.

Bon Jovi

Iron Maiden- Only started liking them in the late 90's. great musicians.

Van Halen -saw them 5 times. Monsters of Rock in 1988 was one of the best shows I ever saw.

Scorpions- saw them with VH at Monsters of rock. They ripped !!!!

Areosmith

Yeah, loved all these guys !!!!!!!!

Anyone listen to DIO?

"Rainbow in the Dark", "Mystery", "The Last in Line title song", "Stand up and Shout", "Holy Diver title song", "We Rock".

Would that be Ronnie James Dio- wasn't he a part of Rainbow at one time? I liked UFO and Foghat.

Does anyone remember Head East? They were fairly big in the Midwest, but they broke up after one or two of the guys got saved , and at least one went on to form Petra (at least, I have heard that story once or twice ....)

LOL

I doubt that my gf would have a problem with THAT pic! ;) She's too self confident for that and has pretty much accepted the fact that I love Metal too. ;)

Forget about the self confidence thing I said about her... We've just broken up for reasons that were not *my* fault, but which I don't really want to discuss here either.

yes

I saw him with Black Sabbath when he joined them for the Heaven and Hell tour in Hawaii. I also saw him with his own band in Chicago after Holy Diver came out.

He is now touring with what was Black Sabbath in his time, but the band is called Heaven and Hell.

Yep, that is Ronnie James Dio.

He sang in a lot of bands over the years, since the 60's up till today.

1. Ronnie and The Rollers.

2. Elf.

3. Rainbow.

4. Sabbath.

5. DiO.

6. Sabbath again under the name of Heaven and Hell.

Ronnie's website is simply: http://www.ronniejamesdio.com

Does anyone remember original 80's MTV Headbanger's Ball with Ricki Rachman?

I was a regular viewer on this show. Every Saturday night at 11:30 p.m.

So many awesome bands were on there, most of which are still around today.

Some are not, but many are.

Probably the dumbest thing I ever saw on original Headbanger's Ball was Janet Jackson's song "Black Cat". How is Janet Jackson even slightly Metal? I don't get it.

Probably the coolest thing I ever saw on original Headbanger's Ball was Ricki's interview with Dave Mustaine from MegadetH talking about sky diving, and showing him and Dave jumping out sky diving out of an airplane about 30,000 feet in the air.

I remember it but didn't watch it.

Fox listed Metallica as Cleveland Indians third baseman Casey Blake's favorite band tonite.
