I initially thought about doing all the Bowl games, but since there's about 10,000 of them decided to stick with just the BCS and the Cotton Bowl, since these are the most prestigious of the Bowl games. However, if your team is going to a Bowl and you want to give them a shout feel free to do so. ;)

To me, the best game will probably be the Auburn vs. Nebraska game. I just don't think the selection committee did a good job of selecting compatible opponents and the other games won't be very competitive.

I'm excited to watch the Fiesta Bowl, cuz Boise State is going in, in a position they're not used to...being the underdog. I hope they kick Oklahoma's butt!! GO GO BSU!!!!

National title game
Ohio State vs. Florida: I'll take Florida, in the shocker. Duh! Seriously, nobody is giving them a shot, but I don't think it's going to be a blowout. And when you bleed orange and blue, you always think you're gonna win!

Rose Bowl
Michigan vs. USC. Southern Cal over Michigan.

Fiesta Bowl
Boise State vs. Oklahoma. Oklahoma really has played good football this year, especially given the circumstances. I think this one is close, but OU will pull it out.

Orange Bowl
Louisville vs. Wake Forest. Interesting game... I hope to be able to watch it, at least. Louisville(?)

Sugar Bowl
LSU vs. Notre Dame. LSU. Come on, they have a guy named Early Doucett III!

Cotton Bowl
Auburn vs. Nebraska. Auburn. OK, so I have just proven that I have a pro-SEC bias. I admit it!

(nobody said i had to be a sports-impartial mod to get this job!)

Now concerning Notre Dame's proud history. Notice the last time they won a national championship, 1988. I know, you'll ask how many the Beavers have won. They haven't won in football...YET!(They won in baseball this last year) At least they have won a majority of their past bowl games unlike Notre Dame, who have managed to lose their last 8 bowl appearances. But what really matters is OSU beat Notre Dame in the last two bowl games they have played agaisnt each other.:D ;)

As far as the past decade or so, yeah, it's been tough. But we refuse to go quietly into the night...........:D
--------------------------------------------------------------------
We are the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame

Excellence has never been, nor will ever be easy or without pain. It is a sacrifice that requires the commitment of the coaches, the players, the university faculty, its students, and its vast alumni and subway alumni networks. But the payoff, a shining symbol of excellence, like the dome glistening on a crisp autumn day, is a reward beyond measure.

We pursue excellence with humility, because we know our success is the embodiment of a tradition started long ago, built on meager beginnings and forged in courage, conviction, fight and determination. The history of the Irish is a history of the misbegotten, the disenfranchised and, yes, the misbehaved. The Fighting Irish was never a phrase of superiority, but of inferiority overcoming all odds. It wasn't a compliment to be called Fighting Irish, but a begrudging acknowledgement of a repressed spirit that would never die.

The challenge now is to build on the past and create a spirit of excellence for the future that will bind the generations of those who passed through here in an unbreakable kinship. You've all heard the excuses: that Notre Dame can't win anymore. the academics are too hard and the schedule is too strong. They said the same things when Ara came to South Bend and he won a championship. They said the same things when Lou came here and he won a championship. They are saying the same things now and I believe we can win a championship, together.

We are unapologetic in our pursuit of excellence in academics, athletics and the spirit of helping others. We understand the struggle, we will not compromise and together we will continue the legacy of excellence of those that came before us. We do this knowing there are those who will misunderstand us, think us arrogant or wish us to fail. So be it. We do not need to explain ourselves. We are unbowed. We are the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame - and we will be champions again.

Hey dandos, congrats.....:D

And boys and girls, though many of you disagree, my Irish should beat LSU. Yeah, yeah, I've heard it all: the Irish played a soft schedule (not true); ND is overated (arguable); ND lost to the only good teams they played (even though they played 7 Bowl bound teams and beat 5 of them); LSU has too much team speed; ND hasn't won a bowl game in 10,000 years; Weiss is a fat slob; etc, etc, etc........

LSU is underestimating the Irish, and their coach is in no way capable of matching X's and O's with a guy like Weiss when he's had over a month to prepare a game plan. The Irish will pull off the upset, and I'll be laughing my butt off while listening to Irish hater Mark May fall all over himself making excuses for LSU on ESPN.......:D

Okay, I didn't think there was much left in college football that made less sense than the BS.....er, BCS......method of determining a champion. But I think I've finally found it. And it's in Boise, Idaho.

Now.....this is not meant as a slam against either the folks at MPC computers (sponsors of tonights bowl game) or Boise itself. Boise is a nice town. Been there, loved the ambiance and feel of the community, and I'd love to return for another visit. But a Bowl game in Boise? A trip to Idaho - in December? Nevada and Miami must feel like they're being punished for something......

My condolences Dan. I was left wondering that same thing after about 8 Jaguars games this year. Like, did they think the game was just a practice run-through before the real thing, or what?

As a side note: maybe the voters knew what they were doing in not having Michigan #2. They certainly didn't play like a #2 team this afternoon.

You're right they didn't play like a #2 team...but that wasn't the same Michigan team I watched this whole season...and the same thing happened to the Broncos...and then Darrent Williams got killed. Just seems like nothing's going right for my teams right now.

So far, nobody is giving props to USC for the job they did on Michigan. They shut down Mike Hart and forced Henne to beat them, which didn't happen. And on offense, who needs to run the ball when you have Dwane Jarrett. He and John David Booty picked Michigan's secondary apart.

USC played a fantastic game. Their pass rush was just incredible to watch and Michigan did a bad job adjusting to it, at least while I was watching. Michigan had the chance to prove that they were wronged by not getting into the BCS championship game. They can still argue that, I suppose, but they didn't play like they deserved to be facing the #1 for the championship. my point was that the voters were vindicated in moving Florida ahead of Michigan, at least based on what M did yesterday. If USC is better than Michigan, than Michigan isn't #2.

I agree with you about Jarret's ego. He is a great player, but he has let his success go to his head. A couple things he did last night, I thought deserved unsportsman-like-conduct. For example, after he caught a pass and was still on the ground with a Michigan cb, he tossed the ball at the cb. The anouncers even thought that should be a flag. If it were Pac-10 refs doing the game, he wouldn't have gotten away with some of his antics. Pac-10 refs are the most flag-happy refs in D1 football.

Maybe the academic side isn't that important to you (and I'm not saying you're wrong if it's not, because it's not to a lot of college fans). But having been a student athlete myself I still believe that if you're failing at the first part of that phrase you shouldn't be allowed to participate in the second. And there's no way I could support a school that doesn't think likewise, even if that school is in my own backyard (which is one reason why I can't support CU, even though their campus is just up the road from me in Boulder).

As far as the recent Bowl history goes, yeah, it's embarrasing. And even with the improvements they've made under Weiss the Irish still have a long way to go. But I'll take a school that demands that all of their athletes are succesful students over schools like LSU and Ohio State that don't - no matter how good their football team may be. ;)

Have you seen the "commercial" on YouTube that's a take-off on the Apple-PC commercials? Actually there's two of 'em, one has to do with OSU and Heisman trophies, and one has to do with academics. The academics one cracks me up--it's especially great because it references a commercial that UF did to advertise for the school and "the Gator Nation"...

The academic side of college football is important. Most of these players won't be continuing on to the next level, so they need an education to earn a living. I am currently enrolled in Oregon State University and am in my second year towards my degree. It would seem a little strange to not root for the college I'm enrolled at.:D True the graduation rate is a concern, but it is to the point where these young men need to decide for themselves whether or not they want a successful future.

Sam!
01-04-2007, 02:20 PM
Yes, but is a student-athlete who doesn't care about school really a student athlete? If half of the kids on OSU's football team don't care about school and also aren't going to graduate, why should OSU get to exploit them (at very little cost to the University)? That's the point being made here. Not that the school needs to make kids graduate: you're right that it is up to the studnets to a large degree. However, this topic was dealt with at length in previous threads, so there's no use derailing another topic

Sam has a point, and since it's my thread I'll take the liberty of derailing it just a tad further....:D

It would seem a little strange to not root for the college I'm enrolled at.:D True the graduation rate is a concern, but it is to the point where these young men need to decide for themselves whether or not they want a successful future.True, but I also think there's a responsibility on the part of the school (not just OSU, but any school that offers scholarships). Receiving an athletic scholarship is a priviledge; not a right. And part of the scholarship package is maintaining satisfactory progress towards a degree, and the NCAA says that it's up to the schools to monitor that progress, not just the individual athletes. Yet in too many cases schools will bleed every minute of athletic eligibility out of their players without demanding that the primary purpose of being a student is academic. And I think that any school that consistently shows that they fail in that area - such as Ohio State, Georgia, LSU, and many others do - is guilty of simply using their athletes as slaves for the betterment of their sports programs.
