What do you use? Do you code directly or use wysiwyg?
Anyone use free progs and free hosts?
Recommendations please :-)

I dink around a little with one (see tagline above), used to do a whole bunch but then got too busy to keep up a lot of them, so now I just have a bunch of miscellaneous unrelated pages online. I'm so unmotivated. :p
Gave up on the freebie sites, when they kept going out of business on me, or suddenly becoming NOT freebies anymore. Switched to a pay hosting site (Crosswinds), but after their servers crashed for the fourth time and I lost a bunch of stuff again, I started looking around for someone else. Currently being hosted by 1and1.com (http://www.1and1.com). I think I pay $4.99 per month, 6 months at a time, and it includes 2 free domains. I'm into my 2nd (or possibly 3rd) 6 months with them, and they've not crashed on me yet. :)
I'm a Front Page person, and use a combination of WYSIWYG and some html coding to do a little fine tuning when it needs it.

I usually code it myself, though every once in a while, I will use some other program.

Are you asking for recommendations, or just curious what others are using? I use Dreamweaver for layouts, and .NET for my ASP work. DW it is not for beginners.
I still mostly hand-code, but find that there are so many DW extensions out there, that it's worth using it just for that.
I hear great things about Microsoft's new product, Expressions, which is currently a free download, because it's in Beta. I have contact with many people like myself who are professional web developers, and many of them who are Microsoft-haters still say it's a good program.
As for your other questions, my personal site, www.middletree.net, is a bible study site. I have done other sites, all listed on that site. Much of my time is spent on an Intranet site that I am unable to show to anyone.
My site is hosted for 5 bucks a month on www.webhost4life.com, and I have been with them for years with minimal problems.
I usually hand-code the HTML, PHP or ASP although the current iteration of our website is based completely on WordPress with a slightly modified theme. I pay $7/month for hosting at WebsiteSource. site: samandelise.com (http://www.samandelise.com) ... our "old" site (completely handcoded in ASP) - old site (http://wedding.samandelise.com)

Thanks for the thoughts so far folks.
I'm just playing around with making a site for the far-flung parts of our family so they can see how our house build is going.
Since it isn't something I'll be making money off I can't really justify paying for a program and need to minimise cost for the hosting. If I do a full site build then I'll be keeping a copy here so I'm not worried about losing the site if the host closes down.
Anyone used Bravenet- I heard they are free, but are a build-your-own rather than a fill-in-the-template host.
Thoughts/comments?
I guess I figure that if I learn enough through the process then it will be worth the paid-hosting once I come up with a stunning site ;)
(oh, a btw that you can look at is my daughter's school project for an EnZed competition... I worked out how to do it, demonstrated it and problem solved, but she had to do the actual work: http://www.tvnznetguidewebchalle nge.co.nz/1stAMs/ )

I use Dreamweaver, but when I first learned HTML back in the day, I hand coded. The thing I dislike about free web hosts is the advertising...you never know what kind of ads you're gonna get.
Maybe you could get a blog? Most of the free blog aps out there allow you to upload pictures and such to your blog, so that might work well for what you are wanting to do. Then you won't really have to mess with code or anything like that--you can just put the information up. :) I use Blogger for my blogs. I've tried several of the free blog sites out there, and I like theirs the best.

That sounds s a real good option for what you are wanting to do Jevvv.
I just saw this too
Codetech (https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1002/) – web page editor that has the feel of Dreamweaver. An amazing extension for anyone doing web design that doesn’t want to fork out a few hundred dollars for Dreamweaver.
I haven't checked it out, but there was a bunch of other stuff recommended on the page that I do use with Firefox (if you're not yet using Firefox to browse with you should be!)

WOW! I have just checked out young miss Anita vdM's website and am most impressed! She certainly has a VERY GOOD eye photographically (understatement) along with some impressive design skills, detailed research and talented writing! (she must have a good teacher ;) )

The real advantage of Dreamweaver is the third-party extensions. like those at www.projectseven.com. These won't work in other apps.

Thanks Kevin! Yeah, a combination of teacher (by example) and developing her own eye :-)
Re Firefox: I use OPERA... tabbed browsing and blocking popups years before FF existed ;-)
Thanks for the tip though... will look at FF expressly to use the plugin.

Thanks Raylon.
Actually I probably have enough info to get started now... I think I am just procrastinating!
<thinks: now what should I do a site on?>
