View Full Version : 9/11 Weekly Hot Topic: Rivalries
We are only three weeks into the college football season, but some traditionally fierce and bitter rivalries are already upon us: Florida/Tennessee, Michigan/Notre Dame, Iowa/Iowa State.
Which rivalry do YOU consider to be the best? Why?

most rivalries are all regional rivalries. the best ones vary depending on the season.

I agree with Tulip, in that most of the really good ones are also regional. It's tough to single one out, because there are many I love. However, here are my top 5 and the reasons why:
1.) Notre Dame - USC...........this is arguably the greatest national rivalry between two perennial top 20 schools in the country, and it's also the oldest intersectional rivalry in college football.
2.) Notre Dame - Michigan.........the two winningest schools in college football history. (Michigan also taught Notre Dame how to play the game in the first place).
3.) Army - Navy........Forget the won-lost record for the season; this is the most watched and closely followed game worldwide in college football.
4.) Alabama - Auburn.......I think this is one of the two best of the regional rivalries, simply because of the passion and emotion involved.
5.) Texas - Texas A&M........same arguments as #4, plus it's Texas and it's football..........:D

My favorite personally is Michigan vs. Ohio State. It's classic.

Personally? I like Texas/OU. Verrrrrrrry bitter rivalry that goes back 100+ years. Texas always wants to whoop up on OU (especially last year, considering what OU did to them for 5 yrs. prior..... wait a second... Did I just say "whoop"? That's an Aggie word!!! AAAAAAAAHHH!!!!!) and OU always wants to beat the crap out of Texas. So, I like that one.
But, (here comes the Baylor pride,) Baylor/A&M has been fierce the past two years (since BU beat A&M in triple overtime two years ago) and this year WILL be exciting..... especially since the Bears are on home turf!!!
Sic 'em, Bears!!!

"Florida vs. Florida State in football, that's a real feud! Can't let any of the followers of those two camps near each other with blunt instruments, much less axes, in the run-up to the yearly bloodbath. Seen people sitting at a Bucs-Jets NFL game at Raymond James get into fistfights where orbital sockets were broken, fighting over not whose winning that game, but next year's UF-FSU tilt.

Pitt vs Penn State
Ohio State/Michigan
Ariizona State/Arizona
Those tend to be big rivalries and always seem competitive no matter what the team records are.

Go Army, BEAT Navy. - Best rivalry (and the best pre-game) in the land.
The GAME - The OSU vs. Michigan - Bo vs. Woody, the Big House vs. The Horseshoe.
The Red River Rivalry - Battle for bragging rights between two States that don't like each other.
Harvard vs. Yale. - The one thing the eggheads got right.

Same with UCLA/USC. You're either for one or the other around here.
