TOKYO (July 4) - North Korea on Wednesday test-launched six missiles including a long-range Taepodong-2 believed capable of reaching the United States, in a striking display of bravado that defied stern warnings from Washington and Tokyo, officials said.

The unfortunate reality is that North Korea simply don't care about what the Western-World has to say. While in reality we don't have anything to worry about, it IS somewhat disconcerting that another country has a weapon that could nuke us from several thousand kilometres away. The question I ask therefore is why - exactly - anyone actually needs such weapons. For defence? I think not. The UN Security Council will continue to oppose it but I find it unlikely that anything concrte will actually happen. The war of words will continue unless action is taken. Maybe a pre-emptive strike for example?

But doesn't America have one that could nuke them? Isn't that disconcerting for them? Ah man! I can never understand politics - I know communism isn't good - I know that... but I can't understand why some countries are allowed to have nukes and some aren't... if someone can continue my education here I would really appreciate it...

clearly kim jong il needs to be assassinated...
so you think no country should have nukes? i agree... but what's to keep a nation from making them after we get rid of ours or just not getting rid of them entirely? i don't trust my own gov't to be upfront with me, let alone another gov't... and i know isreal isn't getting rid of theirs.

heres the reason: America and her allies will not go nuking anyone unprovoked, iran cannot have one because its clear what theyd do with it "wipe Israel off the map" and North Korea?? Kim Jong Il is a sick sick individual who wears high heels and watched daffy duck nearly religiously, not too mention that govt tells their army one day they will liberate south korea, meanwhile when theyd invade homes and see shelves stocked with food unlike their own homes in the north the will to fight will be destroyed, as a Christian I wish nukes werent around and we didnt have to worry about this but as someone also who is embedded in politics majoring in poli-sci, it is clear why countries cannot have nukes and why some can, plus these poor psycho countries to make a quick buck could sell their weapons on the black market to say al-qaida? and well wouldnt that just be wonderful

Israel's army is probably the second strongest on the planet, and one thing they know how to do effectively compared to us is occupy or deal with 4th generation warfare of having your citizens or whoever blown to bits by a little angry mecca worshipper

Because we are not a nation that would use them as a first strike. N. Korea obviously from what we have seen would fire them for no reason at all. Iran would nuke Israel if it got the chance.
Personally, I don't think N. Korea is much of a threat to the U. S., simply because their long range rocket failed after thirty seconds according to some reports.

Bugs Bunny is better....
Nicely put though Valpo, I agree and hoe we do a good job of policing this sort of thing with the help of the UN and don't make it look like we're the only ones making a big deal out of it. Then it looks like WE are the ones who are dictators. Its a good thing to have China and a few others on our side.

The Koreans, because pretty much every other Asian people group has oppressed them in the course of time, are MOST likely to retaliate in order to save face, or honor. The best of all available options at this time was exactly what was done........nothing, at least for now.
Iran on the other hand is a very serious problem, and MUST be denied access to nuclear weapons. Iran will either comply willingly or by force, but they will be made to comply.

Chine could fix this problem in a hurry. All it would take is a brief press conference to let them know that Korea WILL cease and disist in its activities...or else.
They'd be insane to not be petrified of China. They are the real superpower...

Many people say that nuclear weapons are not really military weapons but political weapons. The reason for that is that they are so powerful that nobody with a bit of a brain would use them offensively, but that's not their purpose anyways. The actual purpose is to scare other countries in negotiations and to keep them from invading you.
Crazy thing is that this concept did even work during the cold war.

id be careful to be all fearful of the chinese, its just a big country with a lot of people, to say theyre the real superpower gives me the hint you dont think the US is much of one, the reason we are fighting these 4th generation wars against suicide bombers is because it is suicide itself to take America head on, America between her army, navy, and airforce could crush anyone head on on this planet...so Koreas playing a game, distraction, attention, all politics

China has the largest Army in the world....soemthing like 1000 times ours. Their air force and over all technology lacks but they do have nukes.....good ones at that.
Their people and economy are behind them so i'd say all these things add up to a serious military......we;re probably right behind them...but behind them.
China is a serious threat right BESIDE Korea geographically. They can pull the trigger easier than we are....and in a reality, are crazier, I think.

I agree Ev that China is not to be taken likely and thanks to old Jimmy Carter giving away the Panama canal the Chi-Coms are building military bases at both ends of it. Plus you had Clinton admin. folks selling military and technological secrets to them too. Now we hear of Intel guys in Hawaii spying for the Chi-Coms. I say convict the spies and put them on a rock-breaking chain gang forever.

PS no one here (as far as I have seen) has mentioned the absolute failure of all of their missile launches. It was a three stage rocket and never even got to stage 2 before in plunged into the sea. I find it interesting that last night on the news or radio news I heard nothing to mention how much a failure this missile launch was. If the Bush admin. had launched a test missile and it failed the lead in to the story would have been something like, "A missile, test-fired by the Bush administration today, failed to complete two of its three stages before plunging into the sea, in what many are calling an embarrassing failure for America's military."
I was shocked to learn that the missile was a failure and then thought "I wonder why the heck that was not in the tv/radio news?" I guess you have to find more reliable sources for your news than ABC,CBS, NBC.
We should not be afraid of Kim Jong (mentally) Il we should be laughing at him.
Must read, must read, must read!
PS the UN is impotent they have done nothing of note in years except hire ex-spice girls to complain about the fact that the US does not give more money to fight aids in Africa. The UN will do nothing about North Korea...NOTHING!

we are not behind china at all...we would defeat china in a world war 2/ potential cold war battle, im not just saying this as an "arrogant conservative"...Ive had liberal profs that have scoffed at the notion that any other military could handle ours

yeah, we're awesome...
who cares if it worked or not... they weren't supposed to do it. rules are rules. if you're not going ot abide by them then you should be punished... unless of course you're strong enough to defeat the governing authority. then you make the rules.
