Why is it that many christians are offended by and consider the word "piss" to be a swear word even though it is found several times in the Bible? ANd used by prophets relaying the words of God to His people, at that...

Of note is that it is only found in the King James Version and the New King James Version.
The following translations do not use the word,:
New International
American Standard
New American Standard
Amplified Bible

I think it's the connotation maybe. My mom can't stand the word fart and finds it very offensive. Kind of like the difference between calling someone an airhead or flighty...I guess.

I'm with you on this. In fact, we've had a couple of threads here where many have maintained that one cannot say with certainty that uttering even the F-word is sinful. It's cultural. The only words the bible says not to say is harsh words, lies, and using God's name in vain. Anything on top of that is legalistic rules enforced by man.

When I was little, there's a stor about me running up to my mom and screaming "he said the s-word!". When all the moms gasped and started forming the witch hunt to find the potty mouthed kid, my mom quickly replied just as loud "he said shut up? oh no".

What is wholesome? If you go to a country where English isn't spoken, then F-word isn't a bad word, then, is it? Heck, in England, "bloody" is a curse word. My point is that the bible doesn't say these words are unwholesome; society does. And societal norms are always in flux. Sin, however, is not.

I remember the first time I said a cuss word... I said it just to prove I wasn't a goodie tooshoes.. When I said it I felt empowered, so I started cursing and cursing...
My sin... Not cursing... Rebellion...

yes but God knows how you intended those words. So if you did not mean them that way then no they are not curse words but if you do they are

yes but God knows how you intended those words. So if you did not mean them that way then no they are not curse words but if you do they areSo then it is the intent of the heart and not the words, right? So if the F-word was used in a non-insulting way, that'd be ok?
For the record, I agree with middletree.
I don't personally have a problem with the word "piss." I won't use it around my parents or grandparents because they find it offensive, but I use it some. I don't care to look at a friend of mine and say, "Man, I need a piss break." I don't think there's anything wrong with it.

that's the issue, God didn't give us a list of "Thou shalt use the word.."

Here we go again...:)
Language evolves. Cultural norms determine which words are offensive. Just as you would speak differently when talking to your peeps (I just wanted to use that word) than to the president of the company you work for, you know when and if such language is appropriate. I'll even go so far as to say you would speak differently to your German friend than to your French friend. It's a different language/dialect/register.
Now, if based upon cultural norms you decide that saying the generally accepted four letter words is wrong, then good for you. I refrain from them (except for that time in junior high when I was trying to be cool) for that reason.
Then again, does society in general say those words are wrong or does the Christian subculture say they are wrong? I suppose it's a way of "separating" from the world, but given the general acceptance of "swear words" and the fact that the Bible doesn't have a separate commandment list about what words not to say, it seems arbitrary.
*Note* I am not advocating the mentality that because most people think something is ok then it is.

That same thing happens at my house and we have learned to quickly ask, "what s-word". We don't say shut-up or stupid. I am real bad about using stupid and they catch me every time. I don't want them saying it because it is too easy to use the wrong way. I don't even think they know the REAL bad one.

Who defines what cursing and wholesome speech is?
Exactly.
In England, the word "Bloddy" is a BAD word. It means blood of Christ.
The only words that are true curse words are those where we take the lords name in vain. The rest are cultural, slang and a matter of opinion.
To complain, witness or gripe about someones "cussing" (non-god use words), is the high point of hypocricy. People need to lighten up.
