Did yall hear about the lastest dibacle of this court? In an unpublished November 2005 "memorandum" that has received little press, the Ninth said that it's okay for public schools to teach kids about Islam. In other words, little Johnny can't say the Pledge of Allegiance or anything else mentioning God, or learn about Christianity or the Bible, but he can -- and must -- recite the Koran. 7th graders were required to participate in a 3-week class in which students "became Muslim" by wearing traditional Muslim garb, adopting Muslim names, reciting Muslim prayers, and observing the five pillars of Muslim faith. Students were required to chant "Praise be to Allah" to prompts by the teacher, and memorize the Muslim profession of faith: "Allah is the only true God; Muhammad is the messenger of God."

What do yall think? Share people.....

That is the exact reason religion doesn't belong in the Public School System.

That's a bit over the top, to say the least. My kids have studied the world's religions as a part of the social studies curriculum, and I don't have a problem with that, but THIS I would have a problem with.

This court really needs some retirements so Bush can do what he does best - judicial appointments.

I'd want to hear more details. When I taught, any Social Studies teacher was required to teach about the world's religions, including Christianity. My best friend still teaches today, and he still teaches about all the major religions. He isn't forced to leave any one of them out.

At any rate, even if schools were told to leave any mention of Christianity out, that'd just mean that the need is even stronger for believers outside of the school system to tell people the Good News.

Agreed.

Learning about other people's faiths is not a problem to me. We should all learn of aother faiths and philosophies so we can understand each other. I am concerned that the people of other faiths are protected in class from reciprocating by learning about Christianity.

The reciting of the Q'ran and chanting "Praise be to Allah" to prompts by the teacher is worrying, many children's parents would complain if their child had to recite the Lord's Prayer whilst pretending to be a Christian, yet children of all faiths (including Christianity) are expected to play at being Muslims?

This was buried deep in their website. I saw mention of it on another board and started looking.

This court has ruled in more than 1 case against "anything God" ( for lack of a better description) so I thought this decesion odd. They set precedent with the "Pledge Ruling" so this will never hold up.

I agree about religion and the classroom. I sure don't want my boys learning Christianity from the public school system where I live.

I guess it depends on what you mean by 'learning Christianity'. Teachers, especially social studies and history teachers, absolutely should teach the basics of the various beliefs systems.

You can't talk about most wars, plagues, or historical events without discussing the prevailing religious thought at the time. Heck, you can't teach about 9/11 without it.

It would be like a science teacher talking about atoms, mentioning Protons, but ignoring the existence of electrons.

Agreed. But there is a distinction between teaching the basics about a religion and asking children to participate in it. The latter is not desirable in public schools, but is what the schools in question were/(are?) doing with Islam.

I understand this court does have an opening. I believe the nominee has been held up for quite some time now. Figures.
