Hiroshi Hayashi has been charged with filing a false report over claims he had been abducted.
In the past 24 hours, Hiroshi Hayashi has gone from missing, to found, to arrested.
Hayashi disappeared from the Ohio State University campus last Thursday. There was an all-out search, and on Tuesday, he turned up in Tennessee.
He told police he was taken against his will, but then his story changed.
10TV has learned that Hayashi traveled by Greyhound bus from Columbus to London, Kentucky and then on to Athens, Tennessee.
In a police report, Hayashi told police about how he was allegedly abducted from Ohio State. It is a story that is now known to be false.
According to the police report, Hayashi said that he parked his car on West Campus when a man approached him asking for directions. He says that man struck him on the back of the head and when he regained consciousness, he was on the floor of a truck, bound and blindfolded.
Hayashi said he could not identify his attacker and did not know how he got to Tennessee, but officials say they do know how he got there.
Athens, Tennessee Police Detective Scott Webb says Hayashi parked his car at Ohio State and took a cab to the local Greyhound station. There, he bought a ticket to Kentucky under an alias and then made his way to Athens.
Police say before they knew Hayashi was considered a missing person, Hayashi came to the police station with a cut neck and broken glasses claiming he had fallen down a ravine while hiking.
They say the neck wound was self-inflicted.
Investigators are baffled and do not know why Hayashi fabricated the story. They say that Hayashi is not talking about it.
Hayashi has been charged with one count of filing a false report. He will face a judge Thursday morning.
Officials say they don't believe Hayashi came to Tennessee to meet anyone.
