No, and we didn't hear the same sermon either.
Happy coincidence? Probably not too coincidental, since this was Thanksgiving week.

Wowza- didn't know we were being judged on spelling too!
Just don't hold it against me if I speak/write in Canadian/British English.

Here. (http://www.thirdday.com/boards/showthread.php?t=82462)Yo u would think. There are pretty big gaps between $30k(7.22% of richest people in the world), $40k(3.17%) and $50k(0.899%).

Nobody was judging you.
I feel sorry for British spellers, because they spell the following words incorrectly:
Humor >> humour
Color >> colour
soccer >> football

LOL I think Americans are just awfully spiffing, such good chaps, spelling words wrongly so we British can feel so superior. I am glad I have such a sense of humoUr.
Up until about 250 years ago, English people spelled (spelt?) words differently, however they wanted. Some bloke called Johnson then compiled a dictionary and we have been following it ever since. Why should he have got to decide how I spell? I cannot see the connexion <lol>.
PS 'Hear' is spelt (spelled) 'Hear' here too (the UK) :D
Regarding the 'Rich List' if you put that you earn only 500 dollars a year, you will still be earning more than .... Let us see....
500 dollars
You are in the top 79.91% richest people in the world.
There are 1,204,819,277 people poorer than you.
How do you feel about that? A bit richer we hope. Please consider donating just a small amount to help some of the poorest people in the world. Many of their lives could be improved dramatically or even saved if you donate just one hour's salary (approx $0.34)'
I then typed in my monthly pay ... I earn more money in a month than 5,132,820,181 other people earn in a whole year.
fascinating, but puts it all in context.
95% of the world's wealth is owned by 5% of the people. I am pretty sure I am not in that 5%.

I didn't go to that site because my riches aren't monetary. My riches are my husband, my 3 daughters, my son, my son-in-law, my daughter-in-law, my grandson, and the rest of my family and friends. That is where true riches are found.

Well that's nice albeit "pie in the sky". But its your monetary riches that buy you food, housing, clothes etc. It's great to treasure your family, but the reality is you cannot live on that. I don't suppose starving people are thinking, great! I have my family, it doesn't matter if we haven't eaten all week.

I don't have to go there to know that the little bit we make would go a WHOLE LOT further somewhere else. For 1/3 of what my small fixer upper is presently worth, I could buy a huge 4+ bed, 3+ bath, w/swimming pool, maid's quarters, etc., NON fixer upper somewhere else, like Austin (I checked :p ).

Belatedly it occured to me that by not visiting the site, you may have misunderstood the purpose of it. It is not to see how rich you and take pride in that, its purpose is to show the reality of poverty in the world. While we in Western society often moan about our financial circumstances, we are richer than most of the world.
I apologize.

true it's the monentary that pays the bills, but the real riches are still the fam. When I was young there were times when we didn't know where the money was coming to pay the bills or buy the food, but we always had each other and so we were happy. My parents stressed that to us. After I got married and had my kids, we had a little more money and weren't always living paycheck to paycheck and I noticed that we stopped doing so much family stuff and everyone was going their seperate ways. And it wasn't just because the kids were getting older. It was because we had the money to let them do different things. Then we hit a rough patch and lost our house and found out the youngest was hurting herself and thought we might lose my mother. The family rallied around and we realized that it didn't matter what we had materially, as long as we had each other. So, even tho it may sound 'pie in the sky' to you, to me it's a way of life! We are still scrounging sometimes to pay the bills and we eat a lot of soup and sandwiches. But God is always faithful to supply our needs!

And the reality is that even in your poverty, you were still richer than much of the world's population. That is the point of the site. You can't say to a person who is starving- at least you have your family and expect the "richness" of that to satisfy their need to eat, imho.
If your needs are not met (say you are a Christian in a drought stricken country), does that mean that God is not faithful?

the site, which i finally looked at, seems to be more about making you feel guilty...telling you how many people make less than you do, and about how the gap has widened over the years...

I agree, the site does not take into account other factors such as the difference in standard of living, cost of housing.
I know that over 5 billion people earn less than me per year. i also now know that 1 billion people earn less than I earn in a week.
I also (hourly pay) now know that when my boss sits and drinks a cup of tea for fifteen minutes, she gets 15 pounds, it costs the taxpayer over 15 quid! That is about 25 dollars!
A better, more informative site would be one that looks at how much money is required just to live healthily, and how many people earn less than that, and how many times more than that amount are earned by the highest earners.

Actually, the above factors wouldn't work well. You have to take into consideration factors like how much work goes into living healthy, because millions of people throughout the world do not have an income, period. They garden and hunt for their food.
Many of the people I work with in Papua New Guinea do not have an income at all... zero. However, they do have the means to eat and live (survive) as long as they stay healthy. Many do not have the means to better themselves educationally, however, which cuts them out of the world economy. Many do not have the means to have health care, which lowers their life expectancy to about an overall average of 45 in rural areas (the entire country average is around 63, which includes the cities).
For people living in rural villages throughout the world, their incomes are used merely to subsidize their diets, since they grow most (if not all) of their own food. One commonly purchased item is iodized salt, which is often lacking in the diets of those who do not buy their food from a store. Goiters, a noncancerous enlargement of the thyroid gland, are often associated with iodine deficiency in places where people cannot afford salt.
There are no easy ways to define poverty, since poverty is relative to the situation a person is living in. For instance, even though people in the village I work in are considered the poorest in the world (most with zero income), they own huge tracts of hardwood forest that stretches for miles. The value of their land, including the trees and the minerals that could be obtained from that land is probably worth millions of US dollars. It is just not practical to liquidate these resources, being so remote.
If one defines poverty as not having the means to maintain your health, this would put some very wealthy AIDS patients in the poverty bracket, since their medication is some of the most expensive in the world. Or what about even weatlhy people who cannot afford an expensive operation or transplant to maintain their health?
Below is my best shot at defining poverty. Lack of means is a real problem, and it is often related to (but not the same as) lack of motivation. The old cliche', "Where there's a will, there's a way" isn't always true, but does have some merit. For the list below I am assuming that motivation (will) is not lacking, but rather only the means:
1. The person/family does not have the means to maintain (within reason) their overall health, including the lack of means to buy/obtain/make soap.
2. The person/family does not have the means to maintain a healthy diet (within reason), including enough clean water and minerals.
3. The person/family does not have the means or freedom to advance in their society through education or experience, including freedom to grow in their mental, emotional and spiritual health.
4. The person/family does not have the means to perpetuate their livelihood to the next generation (again, within reason).
Just some thoughts,
Rock

That is because the majority of people live in the poorer countries that have very little.
One thing I noticed is that site grossly exaggerated the hourly pay rate for our salary. LOL
BTW, Rock, I completely agree.
You have to take into account not only income, but your obligations. I still think we are better off than many as to what is available to us, but income alone is not a great indicator.
