Hi everyone. I am starting a new feature on the 3D Weblog which will be based on the old "Doctor is In" forum on the message boards. Post any questions you might have for the band here, and I'll periodically pick the best and answer it on the 3D 'blog...

Conspiracy No. 6:
What is the whole deal with the Love Song lyrics? Why does every recording list the lyrics as "How many times has he broken that promise/it can never be done", while Mac has always sung a different line? And is the word "emotion" or "motion"? "Emotion" doesn't really make grammatical sense (it should be "but all of those dreams are empty emotions" if it really is emotion), but that's what I've always heard. Did Mac EVER sing "How many times has he broken that promise/it can never be done"?? Why does no one ever ask this question? Why do y'all never address it? Why have I never heard anyone talk about it? Why is this post probably going to be deleted? It's a conspiracy, I tell you. Conspiracy.

Maybe it's because you are the only one hearing it this way. I always hear: "How many times has he broken that promise/it can never be done."

This is one that I've been pondering since Geoff's departure and Scotty's arrival.
Is Scotty just "with the band" or is he "a member of the band"?
(Clarification: I know of Geoff's being with but not a member of Third Day).

Here's another one to file under "You know you've been playing the new CD too long when..." ;) This one is for Mac:
In "The Sun Is Shining", you wrote -
...And the sorrow lasted through the night
But the joy came with the morn
I will lift my voice
No, I won’t be silent
For You heard my cry
And You turned my mourning into dancing
And so forever I’ll sing...
I found it interesting that with all the words that could be paired up to follow "night" (ie: day, or dawn, etc.), you went with "morn", only to follow THAT a few lines later with the same word, different spelling/meaning/emotion. IE: "mourn".
What's funny is that after listening to the CD and this song without printed lyrics for the whole first month before I actually had a real CD in hand to actually READ the lyrics, I had just assumed that it was "morn" and "morning" (which didn't make a whole lot of sense in the song, but I figured it was a little artistic license, like with "San Angelo, what do you know", and just went with it. ;) ) Then when I actually saw the lyrics after the CD came in, I was like "OH! Mourning! Clever, Mac!" And I've been wondering about it ever since.
Anyway, I was just curious as to whether the "morn"/"mourn" thing was a deliberate play on words, or if it was just how the words fell into place when you wrote the song, and it was all just a happy little coincidence... :)
Thanks!

I'm pretty sure they borrowed (READ: Copy/paste:D) from some other songs on that one. I.e. "He turned my mourning into dancing" and "I'm trading my sorrows"

I never thought of all that before!! I always thought it was "but all of those dreams are an empty emotion". Using the word "emotion" made sense to me as I felt the song was saying that whatever emotion the "man" in the song might think he felt for another person is empty compared to what Jesus felt/did for us :)

Would there be any way of Making a DVD where you could choose a "camera angle" that stayed on one person for the entire DVD? I'm sure it would be a special feature, but I'm not sure there would be enough room. My thought would be so that the musicians in the audience could get an up close view of their favorite musician for an entire concert.

It may be a conspiracy... ;)
I hear "But all of those dreams are an empty emotion"... but I have often wondered about this difference between lyric sheet and sung words... an ad-libbed word change here or there is normal, a whole line being different is intriguing. :)
So I'll "ditto" the lyric question. Is it  printer error? :p

This is a question that my fiance' had always wanted to ask someone in the band:
She read somewhere that all five members of the band came from five different denominations. Is that true? And if so - does that present problems with writing songs about certain things?
Maybe there would be different views about the Tribulation that affect each band member's interpretation of "Sky Falls Down", for example.

Mark, What about the people who are
fans of your guitar playing, We hear alot of stuff about the band, tours , lyrics, and message, But we guitarists would
like you to post stuff on your playing if you could. Maybe post some tabs, interesting ways to play the songs, lessons on fingerpicking, slides,etc.. Your music is awesome and we would like you to share with us this stuff, since we can not just pick up an edition of GUITAR ONE magazine and find and article on you and Brads guitar work.
Thanks
It seems there are some songs on your cds that are never played at your concerts... (at least that I know of... "My Heart" for one, which I love, btw). What makes you pick the ones you do to play live & also what made you decide to include Rich Mullins' "Creed" (which I am so thankful you have!)? Since he wrote so many amazing songs, do you plan to record or play anymore of them? Did you ever have the pleasure of meeting him?

I am in a band and keep looking at different record company sites and 80% of them do not accept unsolicited demos. And the other 20% are either new or independant which could cause a problem with distribution. Now here's my question. I feel that God called me together with the fellow band members. I know this is what he wants me to do, and I have the honor of saying that alot of your music has inspired me to do this, with much of God's love put into it. I also am a song writter, thanks to you. I was wondering if you think that it is honestly worth becoming a Christian artist (for God of course!) and if you have some experiences to share with that. Thank you. God Bless you. And also...I wanted to know when you first started playing guitar, so I know how long I have until I get as good as you. God Bless you...and nice job on WYA...Best album byfar. This question is mainly for Brad and Mark, I guess Mac could answer it too. I was wondering what factors you guys went through in choosing what kind of guitar to play. For Brad, why do you choose to play Epiphone over Gibson? And for Mark, it seems that you have settled with Paul Reed Smith since the Wire CD, what made you make this decision? I think you guys are all awesome! Your music ROCKS! I can't get enough of it!
If you don't mind I would like to suggest something. What would be the ultimate gift to all Third Day guitar wannabes? In the next DVD, I think it would be cool if Mark and Brad would put video, "how to", clips of themselves showing us how they play certain songs. That would be just too awesome!
Thank you for all you do!
God Bless,

When the band was forming, did you guys argue about what to call it? What were the other names that were considered, and why did you settle on Third Day?

Hey Mark. I have a question and a comment. First, I bought my tickets for your Ohio show yesterday. I just want you to know that I am excited for the show and love what you guys do on so many levels. I am bringing my 10 year old son and that will be very special. The fact that I can give him music like Third Day instead of some of the secular stuff out there is awesome. You guys really make differences in lives through your music. Thanks for that.
Now for my question. How is the typical Third Day song written? Do you start with just a concept? Do the lyrics come first or the music? Does it change from song to song and does it depend on which one of you writes it? I suppose that is a bunch of questions, but I think they are all intertwined.
Thanks,
Tony

I don't think I've ever posted a question here....but I do have one.
Dr. Lee (or can I just call you Mark?) :D
My question is this.....What are your expectations of us as fans? (At concerts that is).....It's easy to get carried away, I know. I've heard many a story about things happening that should not have, or were wrong/inappropriate. How much stock to put into it, I don't know. Not opening a can of worms here......I'm just trying to clear some rumors that I have heard, seeing as I have not yet been to one of y'all's concerts. I want to go....but I'm being told that there's a certain rules we have to abide by, and certain people we have to go through to get to the meet/greets, or whatever.
I have no idea what's going on (hence the reason for my question) but hey, I just want to go to a show....and see y'all live. You guys have blessed me in the most difficult times of my life. If I never get to tell you on this earth...I'll tell you in heaven. :)

My question is simple, how did you guys hook up with David Crowder and how did you come to the agreement to tour with them. Both titles of the Brand new CDs together makes a nice ring. For example Wherever you are, you will have A Collision with God. That kind of snagged me with that catchy phrase. I was just wondering how each of you (bands) came to the idea to tour together or was there another influence? I am all for it, as both of these bands are my favorites and am glad but was just wondering. later all

I love how I can hear Mac inhale during songs on the albums - it shows your music isn't as processed as some bands. (Did anyone watch O-Town "Making the Band" - about 400 takes just to remove the breathing.)
So that leads to the question - do you record a song all in one take or is it pieced together (and I just can't tell the difference)?
Thanks, Doc!

Side note: I'm going to be at the show in Greensboro, NC and I can not wait!! I hear that this is the best tour ya'll have done! I'm so excited! Oh, by the way, you and Brad are some of the best, if not the best, guitarist in all genres of music!

I was at the Hampton show and y'all were awesome as usual. Okay, I thought it was sooooo cool that y'all brought out a banjo and did some pickin' for "I saw the light". I almost started clogging which I thought y'all might appreciate being from Atlanta. :D So, who if anyone, is the bluegrass fan in the band and since I got a banjo for Christmas and am learning to play, can I play on the tour!! But, seriously, please explain the bluegrass roots.

Without starting the next month's worth of threads for the Hot Topics section, I've always been kind of interested in the bands, or your thoughts on the secular music scene as far as it relates to possibly your influences and/or things you listen to currently, if at all.
Dear Mark,
First I want to wish you a happy birthday on May 29th. I hope you have a blessed day. God bless you on your special day. I have a question for you. How can I get a copy of your videos for Your Love Oh Lord, You Make Me Mad, Consuming Fire, Cry Out To Jesus? I would really like to have a copy of these videos. I will continue to pray for your ministry. Your ministry means a lot to me. It was great meeting all five of you on April 1st and 2nd. Lord willing I will see you in Calgary on July 16th. Love Marjan VandenBrink:D
Whatever happened to the rest of the 50 states? I really enjoyed the blog for the first half of them. Oh, yeah, there WAS a tour going on... I guess you've been busy!

What's up Mark? I was woundering, was "When the Rain Comes" writen with anyone in mind?
My pressing question for the band, specifically Tai, though any one of you could answer it I'm sure...
Is Murphy a he or a she?
(see a Day in the Life of Tai and perhaps you'll note the basis of the question)
Here's another one...
We know that Tai has a dog...
What other pets do the band members have?
This IS important ;)

Oh, just thought of 2 other points - 1 - I am very new 3rd day fan, not real well known in Aus - well notwhere I live - anyway - to the point, have recently just seen consuming fire clip on JCTV- have to ask, do you guys cringe just a little when watching that now - I mean it is just a little lame, all that splashing around in the ocean!, lucky no one was plugged - thus ends 3D's music career! Fanatastic song though, and i'm sure the clip was cutting edge 10 or so years ago.
2 - I know Macs hair is a taboo subject, praise the lord for whoever through out the peroxide and never let him near it again!!
Catch you round like a rissole (Aussie term - a reply is required before an explanation will be given)!

Hello Dr.Lee!
I was just wondering if you were a Jimmy Buffet fan. Well, of his music atleast!:p Because I noticed in the Rockumentary of the Live Wire DVD, you pulled out a Jimmy Buffet Record, and It just dawned on me...."hey is he a jimmy buffet fan?!". Thanks!

Hey Mark,
I have a question for all guitarists(including myself) who are huge fans of your guitar playing:
Do you guys ever put out any tab books with actual guitar solos and the riffs you play(not just the chords)?
Thanks,

Listening to the CD, it seems that there is a theme. It seems to me that the songs loosely follow a progression through the life of a Christian from intial regeneration through early struggles to live rightly, learning the word of God, and finally dying to self and living for Christ.
Maybe I read too much into it, some eisegesis if you will. Maybe I'm nuts. Tell me....seriously, it wouldn't be the first time I've heard that :) So, what do you all think?

Dr. Mark,
I noticed that in the Live Wire dvd Mac uses a macintosh computer.
Is it coincedence that Mac uses a mac for a computer or was the fact that the computer is called a mac an influence in Mac buying it

Guys...
The band I am in, The Rob Barker Band, entered a competition in September and have made it through two prelims (one being on the same stage as skillet and building 429 and detour 180 at Shoutfest) and have won the chance to play in Nashville for Band With a Mission. Now we are getting that chance on the ninth of this month. You can hear us at myspace.com/barkerband
I know the bands standpoint on unsolicited music so if you can't check it out, I understand. (but do try to swing by there and check it out! please!) Here is my question tho, are there anythings that you can suggest for nerves, or any suggestions for this event at all? We are playing in front of representatives for Fervent Records and Ivan HoHe, and Jeff Roberts for a chance to return to nashville in the summer. Of 25 bands playing next saturday only 5 will return so we are trying very hard for that opportunity since we believe it is Gods will for our lives. any advice or words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated, Heck, I would be happy just knowing you read this and were praying for us! Thanks in advance!

Hey, Doc;
I've never seen any of your music videos. What would it be shown on? I know about MTV and VH1 but we don't watch either one of those channels. We live in the southeast and have Dish Network. The channels we do watch are Sky Angel and now and then TBN. I feel clueless.
Also, what are the bands favorite kind of movies to watch? Do y'all prefer comedy, action, etc? Would y'all rather watch them at the movie theater or rent at home/on the road? Just curious. Thanks.

Hey, doc;
Do y'all have nicknames or do you consider your Gomer name as your nickname? I've only been listening to you since 2001 (my Christian BD is 11/6/01 and this is not because of Sept. 11). You were the first ones I heard (King of Glory) and I came up with nicknames for the 5 of you. None of them are bad.
Mac-e has been my nickname to my NJ clan (all but my 2 yr old great-niece, Cassandra who can't say Aunt Mac-e and Uncle Larry - to her it's Aunt Wacky and Uncle Lawwy) since 9th grade art class 1976. I usually just go by the initials mb down here in SC.

Just wondering what criteria you guys are using to determine your Greatest Hits? I know if you ask 10 different fans you would get 10 different lists. I'm quite sure it will be more than your #1 hits (or I hope so!).
Looking forward to it no matter what songs are on the new cds!

Soooo.....Doctor......eve ryone wants to know....were you really in the bathroom at the Grammys? :p
Heres what Mark had to say about on his blog (http://thirdday.blogs.com)
I've had some embarrassing moments in my day. Stepping into unknown substances during photo shoots, dropping a recently received award in front of a former U.S. president. But this one just might take the cake. So we're on the way in to the Grammys today. Our category wasn't until 3:00 (or so we were told). We do our red carpet thing, and then start making our way into the hall were the pre-telecast ceremony was being held. Knowing that it could be awhile before I got another chance, I decided to stop by the men's room. I tell the guys I'll catch up with them. Literally a minute later I come back out and can't find anybody. I see Scotty and ask:
"Where'd everybody go?"
"Dude, you guys won. They're all up on the stage."
He was so non-chalant about it, I thought he was kidding at first. Then panic set in. I sprinted towards the stage. The other guys are up there. Mac is saying "Our guitar player is literally in the bathroom right now."
Laughter ensues as I continue to make my way to the stage. It's too late to play it off, so I throw my hands up in the air like a champion.
Chalk up another embarrassing moment to the Mark Lee legend. Hey, if I can humiliate myself to help out the cause, I'm all about it.
To add to the humor of the whole thing, the AP picked up the story, and it was mentioned on several news sites. Hey, it makes for a great memory, right?

Hey Mark,
I was just sitting here looking through some of the booklets to your Albums and I noticed that in the back insert of the Offerings case Mac's playing an especially unusual electric guitar. So the question is: what kind of guitar is that? I know you're playing the standard Paul Reed Smith, but Mac's guitar looks like a left-handed Rickenbacker Fireglo. Just curious, because I don't recognize that guitar as being Epiphone, Paul Reed Smith, or Fender.
INSERT: Nevermind. Curious, I checked your "All-Access Come Together 2002 Tour" slideshow and it had a picture of Mac playing the Rickenbacker Fireglo. I'm surprised I actually guessed the correct guitar from the fuzzy picture on the back of the Offerings case.
So, to replace the question, why do you still use Epiphones? You've got access to all sorts of equipment, but I was curious because I'd figure that if Chevrolet could endorse you, so could somone big like Gibson, Gretsche, etc. Just curious, because unless I'm missing something, Epiphones don't strike me as being top-of-the-line.

I know back in the day--well, in the 90's anyway--Mark and Brad did a few magazine adds for Epiphone. And I remember that Brad tweaked his guitars some too. :)

Dr. Lee,
Thank you for including two unreleased songs on CV1. They're both great songs. Is there any way we'll be able to get other unreleased or rare songs without paying hundreds of dollars for them? I don't know how you would feel about this, but it's worth a shot. Could you provide some means for us to download songs like "Contagious" and other out-of-print songs without having to empty our savings accounts? Boy, that would be awesome. Let me know what you think if you get the time. I know you're probably busy because of that whole rock and roll thing yall do. ;)

Since Mr. Lee hasn't been in this forum for a while, I can tell you this: Contagious, Long Time Forgotten, and Southern Tracks are up on the online radio. You can also find songs from the Alien EP on the "odds and ends" section on the online radio. The songs "She Sings in Riddles" (from Southern Tracks, included in CV1) and "Underwater" (also from Southern Tracks, not included in CV1) are up for download in the Gomer homepage, under the heading "Gomer Giveaways."
However, Mr. Lee, I will second the motion to release downloads or re-release CD's for purchase of the rarer stuff. :D
