depends on who you are. my family has never gotten them. somebody who is higher risk, like an infant or a senior or something, for them it might be a good idea.

Exactly.

The first time I got one, was the LAST time. I was sick for 3 months....I mean....really sick. I had to be admitted to the hospital twice.

Never again.

It's a good idea for people who are at high risk like James just said ^.....however, I don't see the point in injecting someone with the flu virus (at least I think that's what it is) just to get your body to fight it off (kind of would be the same if you contracted the flu, wouldn't it?)...if you don't get sick, great. But most people I know who have had the shot, did get as sick as I did. Just my two cents.

I guess it's up to the person....and their doctor.

The flu vaccine is supposedly a small amount of unviable flu. Meaning it does everything the real virus does except reproduce. It's supposed to gear up your immune system to protect you from the real thing. Some people react more violently to the shot than others. But in little kids and old people whose immune system arent quite what they used to be or will be, the shot can save their lives.

Thanks for the info.

If it works for the person, then by all means they should get one.

I've never had the flu....so I've never thought about a flu shot. And almost every year, I hear about the shortage of flu shots available or that they produced the vaccine for the wrong strain of the flu anyhow. So why bother unless you are high risk or elderly?

I never had a flue shot but did get the flue but only a very mild case. I was sick for about four days. If you work some where were alot of people stay sick then they suggest you get one. Like school or hospitals or doctors offices. Even people who work in actors are suggested to get one.

I'm a big fan of the flu shot. Just got mine today.

I've been getting them since I was 11. At first it was because my family was considered high-risk because of my dad's emphysema. And then I got them because a friend's mother was a nurse and would give them to us all when we'd come over to the house to hang out. And then when I went to college, and my roomie worked at the student health clinic, I was considered high-risk again.

There's only been one year I didn't get a flu shot. I got the flu two days before Thanksgiving, and didn't get over it until after Christmas! I will never go through that again.

I've never had a flu shot...

The last time I had the flu was about 5 years ago...and it wasn't that bad. I have had it bad, the week in the bed, not wanting to move, miserable kind of flu before, but that was 8 or 9 years ago. I know my number is coming tho, so I'm just trying to live healthy, and make sure that I take my Vitamin C. :D Besides, I'm not around a huge amount of people all the time, so I'm not that concerned. If I were, tho, I'd probably consider getting a shot...

I got one about 30 years ago... and I was horribly sick that year. I haven't had one since, but now that I'm getting older (ha! 50... is THAT old?) & I work as a sub in schools, I MAY consider getting one. I'm waiting to see where it hits & how bad it hits first. Of course, then it might be too late :( !!

I don't know, My personal expericence is that the two years I got one I was sick more those winters than any of the years I didn't! So I wont take another but I know a few people who swear by them and do it every year so I guess it is different for everyone but I don't recomend it!

They offered flu shots where I used to work, but I'd never get them, they would ALWAYS schedule them on or before the day that I had tickets for hockey games, and there was NO way I was going to risk blowing an $80+ hockey ticket by getting a flu shot and ending up sick that day.

I finally broke down and got one last year (with the lockout, there wasn't any hockey to worry about), but didn't notice any difference when I got the flu anyway. It didn't make me sick when I got it, but it didn't seem to lessen the effects of the flu once I got sick.

This year I didn't work there to get the office freebie, but did have access to free flu shots via Blue Cross, they were giving them out at the RBC Center last month sometime. I skipped them.

If it doesn't keep you from getting sick, and doesn't lessen the effects of having the flu when you DO get sick, I can't really see the point. All I got out of the one I got last year was a sore arm and one of those DumDum suckers. :p

I don't get them *because* I'm high risk. I have enough problems without purposely getting sick from a flu shot. Besides, I never get the flu.

I never had the flu until about 3 years ago. It was the absolute worst I have EVER been sick!!! I mean, I could not getmyself out of bed and walk to the bathroom! No, I don't mean I did not want to, I COULD NOT! Everything on my body hurt so bad!!! My husband got me dressed and took me to the doctor, and he practically had to CARRY me!!! Of course, by the time I got to a doctor, it was too late to take the, oh, what is it called??? Tamiflu. Yeah that's it. If you catch it in time, you can take this pill for a few days and it will MUCH lessen the severity. As I said, it was TOO LATE!! I was miserably sick for 10 days. I almost lost my job because they could not believe someone could have the flu THAT bad. Since then, I do not skip the flu shot. I have not had the flu since then, thankfully. But once was plenty for a lifetime!!!!

That's probley why I had it only for a few days because I took the Tamiflu pill. I startedhaveing the symptoms of flu and someone from our church is a nurse and we also know some one from our church who works at a drugstore so my mom called the person who was a neurse and she said that it was definetly flu like symptums and havee me take that she told my parents to tell the guy we knew at the drug store that she said to give them the Tamiflu for me. So they did. That saved them a trip to the doctor.

I work at the Department of Health and Human Services, so I'm not required, but most definately encouraged to get one. I feel really guilty though, when we run out and there are babies and senior citizens who weren't able to get one. I'd prefer to just hope and pray I don't get the flu. That's how I always used to do it!!

I'm a high risk person (because of my gastric by-pass) AND I work with kids alot (talk about a germ fest)

I get them every year and I have noticed a difference. Last year I got the flu but it was so much milder. This year in September I got the flu before I could get a shot. I was sick for 4 weeks!! ICK!!!

It works differently for everyone. I've also gotten the pneumonia vaccine. I figure every little bit helps

Absolutely - every year that my company gives free shots I take it. They used to give them to spouses too but don't do that anymore.

Niqul works for the common cold and viral things. Not the flu. Once you have had the REAL FLU you would know the difference and the importance. Makes you deathly ill, disables you.

Just so you know....

I got a flu shot because right now I live in the dorms and I don't want to be sick in bed during finals. The dorms are great places to catch any bug thats going around. Unfortunately I went home to for the weekend and caught the flu from my parents 5 days after the flu shot. Flu shots take 2 weeks to take full effect. Dang. I lose. Oh well, maybe it will still keep me from getting other stuff.

Same here. I think my mom got the flu once in her life (when she was in her 30's); other than that, I don't think anyone in my immediate family has ever had it. It seems rather pointless to me. But, for those at high risk of serious health problems if they were to catch it, the shots would be a good idea, I suppose.
