View Full Version : Cities (again)

Pages : [1] 2 3

Ack! We lost the supposedly neverending Cities game, so I'm starting it again.

Rules:
I start with a city or town (basically anywhere with a post office) anywhere in the world and the next person names a city starting with the letter that ended the previous city.

For example:

I might say- Toledo, Spain

Toledo ends with o so the next person has to name a city starting with o such as:

Oracle, Arizona

Got it?

I'll start:

Tucson, Arizona

Jason

Kingman:
In October 1857, Lt. Edward Fitzgerald Beale and his experimental Camel Corps trudged across the present site of Kingman, Arizona surveying a wagon road along the 35th parallel.

After the first travelers encountered hostile Indians in the area, Fort Mojave was established on the Colorado River. Off-duty soldiers scouted the hills and found gold and silver.

Mining camps sprang up in the years to come and in the early 1870's cattle were driven in to take advantage of the lush grasses.

Located in a natural basin, surrounded by basaltic hills it is ironic that Kingman was not established as a mining town but as a railroad town.

In 1880, Lewis Kingman surveyed along the Atlantic and Pacific right of way between Needles and Albuquerque. By 1883 the track was completed.

The first reference found of Kingman is from the Alta Arizona, a newspaper published in Mineral Park. The issue of 10 June 1882 states, "There is a new town on the tapis at or near Beale Springs."

In October 1882, the Alta Arizona refers to the sampling works at Kingman, also saying that Middleton is to be hereafter named Kingman, where in November 1882, a rooming house, stores and other buildings were going up.

Why did they send convicts to a beautiful locale?

sandie

For the view of the Sydney Opera House?

Sydney was a deepwater harbour with a freshwater creek called the Tank Stream running into it. The Tank Stream is now buried below some of the streets of the City.

Captain James Cook, who had explored the East Coast of Australia 18 years before, had recommended an area to the south, (near SydneyAirport nowadays) but there was not enough fresh water.

The convicts missed out on this aerial view of Sydney.

Hi John. Long time no speak. The photo is beautiful! :)

You have a lovely Christmas, too.

We've got 33 to 35 degrees C here - Summer is certainly beginning, after some rain.

Rhyll, Victioria. Do you know where that is?

Sandra.

Sandie, I don't remember where it is! My memory on aussie things is getting bad, HELP

Yes, I love the photo too, just one out of 100's that comes up special. :)

Kangeroo ground (only in oz!) is very close to where I used to live and where many of my friends work at the Wycliffe Bible Translation HQ.

See ya mate ;)
