View Full Version : Ethical Question

I`ve been thinking of giving some of my CDs to my Youth Group so that anyone can listen to them when they want. I have all my CDs on my iPod, so I don`t really use them anymore. My question is: If I give the CDs I bought away, but keep them on my iPod, am I now stealing the music? I`m conflicted on this because i`ve come up with reasons why I would be stealing music (not actually owning the CD anymore, but still having the music) yet I bought the CD so that makes me think that I wouldn`t be. I need to hear some opinions.

I don't know, I don't think you are stealing music because you bought them in the first place. It not like you downloaded something without paying for them. This is a tough question though

You're not making a profit from giving them to the Youth Group, but I think loaning to them to Youth Group would be a good idea as well. :)

There must be some homepage somewhere...
Overhere, you are not allowed to copy a CD, lend it out to a friend and listen to the copy while the friend has the CD, but that might be local.

I didn`t make a copy of the CD, I put MP3s of it on my iPod. I`ve been thinking about it, and no, it isn`t stealing music. All i`m doing is making the music able to be listened to at my Youth Building, not giving it to anyone in particular, so it really is still my possession.

Copying to a CD or to an Ipod is pretty much the same...
I'd think it's illegal, even if your youth group is not a person, but I don't know. It's not really an ethical question, it's a legal question, so try and find out what the law says where you are. Ask in a music store, a police station, or something.

As someone who is a real stickler on burning CDs and illegal sharing, I'd have to say that you are in the clear on this one as LONG AS no one else makes copies of the CDs. Are you a youth group leader or a member of your youth group? If you aren't a leader, talk to your youth leader and make sure they know that you do not want to be a part of any wrong-doing, and so you don't want ANYONE, under any circumstances, to copy the CDs.

I`m a Youth Worker in my Youth Group, and i`ve been making sure the CDs were there before our Youth Building is locked up. I don`t condone burning CDs myself, and won`t allow others to do so with the ones I bought.

Then I say you're perfectly fine!
