i was there yesterday in virginia looking for books on the middle east conflict. i settled on thomas l. freidman's "From Beirut to Jerusalem". while i was perusing the shelf, this guy approached me. and the convsersation, more or less, went like this
strange man: "hey, what kind of history do you like?"
me: "ummm, 1900's - present.....arab/jewish history"
SM: "yeah, i like civil war era stuff"
me: "uh cool"
SM: "so, you doing this for school or for fun"
me: "fun"
at this point, i was trying to figure out why this guy was talking to me. i didnt make eye contact. i just kept looking at the stack of books, hoping he would get the hint. but he didnt
SM: "so are you in school?"
me: "no, i graduated. "
after some small talk, i realized that this guy wasnt going to just walk away. i figured that God must have sent him to me for some purpose. i mean, i am moving up to roanoke in 2 weeks. i figured this guy was either 2 things....a mormon or jehovah's witness or someone that had a sweet job and that could be a potential connection. as he continued to ask me tons of questions, i decided that he wasnt religous, or that he wasnt pressing his religous agenda onto me. so it must be something else. i told him that i lived in durham. he said he was an entrepreneur that had business associates in durham. he gave me his number and wanted my number, so i gave it to him. then i told him i had to go meet my lady firend in the cafe.
i met up with jenni and told her what happened. she said that he must be gay. that gay men try to pick up guys in barnes and nobles all the time, that her brother had been approached by a gay man, that gay men are so arrogant that they think all men have the potential to be turned, thus the reason they would approach someone that looks like me. we discussed what his agenda was. could he be an amway salesman? could he be some non-denom evangelical that was challenged by his preacher to make 3 new friends? could he be a sociology student doing some project to see how people react to total strangers approaching them? could he be a scientologist? could he be a homo?
then he walked past us with 2 other guys. jenni took one look and said he wasnt gay. she has a killer gaydar because all her friends are gay guys. we deduced that he couldnt be a mormon or JW because he never brought that up, plus he approached me alone. so what could it be????
