I will keep an eye on this the best that I can if this kid ends up in court maybe others will call or write letters to help.

It was just the reporter playing up that angle - no way will he be charged with anything. He'll be treated as a hero, like he should. THAT'S my country (why did you call it "your", does that not include you?)

There were two Duke students who stole press passes from someone, copied them at Kinkos, went down there to NO, lied about what car they had, and then brought a family back out.

So should they be charged??? Should this guy who stole this bus be charged?

Anyone else agree with me that the end doesn't justify the means and that no matter what, there are consequences for illegal actions? Anyone think it's ok because they were rescuing people?

Which side are you on?

I think the 'consequences' should be defined by more than just the actions. The 'good' of saving human life is more important than the 'bad' of stealing a bus. I think it would have been MORE immoral NOT to steal it - given the situation.

Situational ethics are different from moral relativism.

I'm certainly not on the media's side. What poor reporting. They could have made a much better piece (story) out of that, but they chose to make the guy sound like a criminal. There was not one shred of hard news in it other than the kid rescued a bunch of people. There was not even any mention of why there was a hold up at the Astrodome - maybe they just were not expecting any buses to arrive for hours and were just not quite sure how to process and help these people. The media did not talk with anyone in any position of authority.

It's the same situation that we have been hearing of for days - these people had to help themselves because no one else was. People in the NO stadium were only getting food and water from those who were going out and helping themselves! Is it wrong to want to stay alive?
I saw another article about a white guy who admitted stealing a boat that him and two of his buddies used to recue over 100 people over 3 days ... they never mentioned that he might get arrested.

Personally, I think all the buses should have been used to pick people up...free of charge. It should have been part of the 'local' evac plan. Had that been going on, the finger pointing at the government might not be so heavy. But then again, it is easier to point elsewhere.

I guess I am frustrated with the criticism. Everyone knows the government is slow as molasses in January...So you are going to round up and deploy units from outlying states...and sorry, but that takes time.

I agree. Let's say your one of the victims of the hurrican. You have at least one infant (one would be bad enough in this situation). You've run out of clean drinking water and formula for the kid. Do you let it stave and go thirsty because you don't want to take the items you need from the abandoned store?

Shame on you if you do. If some one stole a bus to save lives, how in the world is that a bad thing?

this kid will not be arrested, much less prosecuted. this is poor reporting, at it's worst.

He should get a commendation (sp?). It's another case of the media trying to over-dramatize a story.

I think it's amazing that he was able to drive a bus having never driven one before.

My question to the mayor is - why were there working buses just sitting around the city?
