$3.09 (last check) it jumped over 30 cents from the time i went to school (around 7:10ish) and the time i went home (5:20ish). but we can get some relief because our kroger store has a 3 cents off a gallon when you use the plus card. the more you spend/save, the more you can get off with your plus card.

Stations that were $2.55 this morning had jumped to $2.99 by the afternoon here in Raleigh. Thought I'd top of the tank before it got any higher, and the 8 gallons that it took cost me nearly $25. And some of the regular unleaded pumps are already out in the area...

The one bright side about being unemployed at the moment, a tank of gas lasts me a LONG time. :) The last time I filled it was after coming back from Kings Dominion in VA on 7/8, and I was still sitting at between a half and three quarters of a tank of gas from that same fill up when I topped it off today.

It's 2.99 for reg and steady going up like 2-3 times a day. It's hard to find reg around here, as almost all stations have bagged the reg and med grade tanks. I guess that means they are out???????????....or just trying to sell high grade. :(

I live in Lincoln Nebraska and it is 3.95 here. Luckily the gas station that I usually go to is really good about warning me when it is going to go up. I was able to fill up at 2.54 mon. afternoon after they told me it was going to go up on Tues morning, then this morning they told me it was going to go up this afternoon to 3.95, so I topped off my tank at 3.18...it's crazy, the guy filling up next to me was complaining up one side and down the other. I told him to be thankful, at least we had cars to fill up and homes to drive them to!

i might be a little late for this, but i'll post it anyway ...

i have quite a long commute to work and saw everything from around 2.79 up to 3.15 on my route home, though i hear there gas that even higher than that...

funny story, I got into work this morning, and our boss called us into a meeting to see if we all had full tanks of gas... none of us did, so he sent us all out one at a time to fill our tanks before the afternoon...

we found a station at 2.66 near the office and filled up there.. it was over 2.80 on the way home !!

Ok to me gas is cheap in the US here in the UK we pay around 90.2p for Unleaded and 94p for Diesel (this is the average but it varies from petrol station to petrol station) so the conversion rate is practically $2 to ever £1 sterling so for arguments sake lets say we pay $2 per Litre so by the gallon we are paying i think its almost $10 perhaps a bit more.

So really you shouldn't complain, praise the Lord He has given us the cash to by petrol in the first place!

If I calculated right gas is anywhere from 3.57$ (3.01$ usd) to 4.40$ (3.71$ usd) a gallon... we buy it in litres (which costs 94.4 cents-1.144$) so I hope I calculated it right :)

True we shouldn't complain; but you guys are doing that to yourself on gas prices: look at the above chart - your taxes are well over half of what you're paying! Here in the US, our taxes are much lower. I do wish they'd start drilling in Alaska, Utah, the Gulf coast off Florida, etc. where we know we have oil to alleviate our need to import it here though.

$3.09 for regular unleaded average in Phoenix. Could be a little less or more but thart's the average and what I see at the gas station up the street from where I live. They can make any excuses they want as to why it's so high, but I never buy the stories, do you? They could raise it to $5 a gallon and people would still buy it because they need gas, even $10 a gallon. We need more cars that except alternate fuel. Why not even something we waste like urine? ;) City buses in Phoenix don't run on gasoline but natural gas that comes from hydrogen. They make cars to have gasoline tanks probably because they make more money this way. ;)

I couldn't believe this... from one of the columnists in the News and Observer this morning...

Robbed at a gas pump

By BARRY SAUNDERS, Staff Writer

For just a minute Wednesday, I felt like a member of The Honey Cone, the 1970s trio of soul sisters who had a hit song called "Stick Up."
No, I didn't feel a sudden urge to run out and slip on some pink hot pants and high-heeled boots, as those ladies did.

What I wanted to do, though, was run out into the middle of the street and, like them, belt out "Help! I've been robbed. Ohhhhhhhhh. Stick up. Highway robber-eee. It's a fel-o-nee. It's a case of grand larcenee."

The guy who robbed me at the BP gas station at Eastgate Shopping Center in Chapel Hill this week was armed not with a gun, but with a key -- the key he used to shut off the gas pump as I stood there poised to fill up with relatively cheap gas.

OK, $2.66, the price advertised on the sign, which drew me and two other drivers into the station, is not exactly cheap, but it was the lowest price in the area and the lowest we were likely to see for the next several weeks.

I didn't even have time to unholster the pump and fill 'er up before the man walked up. "Gotta turn off the pump to raise the price," he said. Before I could stick the hose where I wanted to, he'd hosed me and sauntered off to tell the other drivers that they, too, would have to pay 33 cents more a gallon than the sign advertised.

Since every gas station attendant or owner is blaming Hurricane Katrina for the rocketing gas prices, I wanted to ask this bloke, "What did Katrina do in the last 10 seconds that made you have to raise prices now?"...

It went down to 3.29 here in Lincoln now. I have a quick story for you all....I was putting gas in my car last week and a gentleman was filling up next to me. He was griping to everyone around how ridiculous the price was...I couldn't take it anymore, so I told him to be thankful he has a car to put gas in and a home to drive it to. All data that follows is from Feb 2005, but still, makes an interesting comparison. All prices are in pence (UK currency) per litre.

Highest price in Europe: Netherlands at 89.6 pence per litre.
Lowest price in Europe: Greece at 57.6 pence per litre.
Average price in Europe: 73.525 pence per litre.

Average price in UK: 82.2 pence per litre.

Average price in USA: 27.5 pence per litre, a 62% discount on the average European price.

Now let's compare the US price to Australia (where I'm from... not quite as expensive as Europe). Assume a nice round price of $3 a gallon.

$3 US... which is $3.89 Australian... 1 US gallon = 3.785 litres...

which means

$3 US gallon = $1.02 Aussie per litre...

Brisbane September 8 2005
cheapest = $1.227/litre... average= $1.274/L... highest $1.299/L
Sydney September 8 2005
cheapest $1.289/L... average $1.353/L... highest $1.399/L
Melbourne September 8 2005
cheapest $1.275/L... average $1.362/L... highest $1.399/L

Those averages work out to the following in US terms...
Brisbane: US$3.73 a gallon
Sydney: US$3.96 a gallon
Melbourne: US$3.98 a gallon

check here for the cheapest places to buy fuel in Oz... http://motormouth.com.au/default_fl.aspx

Well the protests that were planned last week here in the UK never came to anything so the price of petrol hasn't dropped but some of our supermarkets (Tesco, Asda Wal-Mart) have brought the price down by 4 pence to 88.9 pence per litre here in Aberdeen so hopefully the other garages might decide to follow.

I did watch a thing on the tv last week that showed exactly how much tax we pay per litre of fuel compared to other countries. In the UK 64.5% of the cost is tax, 50% in France and at the end was the US at 7.2%. This is the only thing i remember cause i wasn't paying attention.

Should be going up again today. Hurricane Rita is headed for the Gulf Coast, and maybe Houston, which has a lot of oil refineries. I'm not sure what the new price is, but it's higher. :(

$2.71-2.70, but something really odd is going on here. Unleaded and the next step up are the same price at some of the gas stations. Any logical explination for this?

Y'all might want to fill up now, while it's "cheap"... they're saying on the news because of Rita, some folk are saying that gas prices may be jumping from the $3ish they are now up to about $5/gallon.

How true that is, I don't know, but that's what was on the news tonight...

i was just coming here to post that......even if it's just reactionary, i think we will see a price spike for a few days.

09-21-2005, 06:57 PM
it's to be expected. the price may be the same for unleaded and the next up because they are trying to get rid of the next one up because everyone is buying the cheapest. that's what a clerk at our gas station said one day.

Surrounded by multiple stations selling it for $2.88 or $2.89 right now here in Raleigh.

Now I wish I hadn't topped off the tank back when it was $2.99. I thought I did good at the time, since it shot up to over $3 the very next day. But I still had over half a tank when I did it, and have only needed to move the car once since then, so I really could have gotten away with NOT filling it then and getting it cheaper now.

Oh well, but how do you know. Better to be safe than sorry.

BJ's was $2.73 today....I don't fill up anymore...I fill it about half way so if there happens to be cheaper gas along the way I can get some...

It's jumped back up to $3.09 around the corner here in Raleigh, and I think it's something like $3.19 in Garner. Ugh.

Fortunately, I'm still at 3/4 of a tank, so HOPEFULLY won't have to top it off until after the prices drop back down a little again...

the "company line" has always been that it would cost so much to get it from there, that it's cheaper to import it.......i have no idea how valid that point is, but it's one the oil companies have been using for years

It is somewhat valid. It would cost so much because of all of the insane permits and permissions and lobbying and time that it would take to silence the environmental people into letting them drill. The port infrastructure is already there. They just have to drill the oil and either pipe it or send it via rail to the port(s). I say we go ahead and drill...and use the birds or whatever animal those people are worried about as food for the workers...two problems solved!!! :p

It was $2.98 around the corner when I left for my last day o' work yesterday afternoon, and dropped a penny 6 hours later when I came back.

But it's all good (relatively speaking  ), by then I'd filled up at the new gas station at Sam's Club just out of downtown Raleigh and paid $2.92. Only 5 cents less, but I'll take it. :)

Wow. $1.98? And I thought the $2.44 I paid a few days ago was good. I think it's actually dropped to about $2.39 at some stations here in Raleigh.

Nice to hear it's supposed to keep dropping, now that I'm driving more again.
