i'm sorry, everyone's list is wrong. you forgot me. :p
Bootsy collins...who does he play for? all i knew is that he played on one song called "tear me down" on the gov't mule album "the deep end". that was the one they did right after allen woody died( a incredible bassist there, he also played for the allman brothers).
Timothy B. schmidt, from the eagles.
Stu Hamm
there's lots of others i like, but just can't name. it's alot easier to name guitarists since they get mentioned often. bassists just kinda stand off in the distance and don't get too much attention until they start slapping.

Bootsy's main gig was Parlament/Funkadelic. He also had a solo effort that is refered to as Bootsy's Rubber Band. But he has done a ton of studio work. Including but not limited to Toby Mac. Not to mention his signature bass is AWESOME!!! You better be able to bring the funk if you drag that thing out of a case.

Agreed - listen to the bass walkdown in Give Me A Reason right after Mac sings "Is it the demons, devils of the world, or is it only myself?" - it's amazing. And that was back in '97.

hmmmmmm good question -
I saw Phil Joel (Newsboys) 'live' back in 99, and he rocks. Next would be Tai from 3D, Will (Bill) McGinniss from Audio A., Peter Davyduck from Chris Janzen band/Brian Doerksen, the Forman brother of Switchfoot, Gary Novak of Day of Fire, Traa of P.O.D., Tim Gaines of Stryper, Rick Heil of the original SONICFLOOd, and the bass player from Kutless. Was that 10???

been awhile since i've seen this thread. and since i first posted i discovered another great bassist, who was mentioned just once as far as i can see. oteil Burbridge. he plays with the allman brothers band, heads his own project called oteil burbridge and the peacemakers, i've also found a old project called the aquarium rescue unit(with jimmy herring and kofi burbridge). he also claims to be a christian and those last two bands i mentioned are supposedly in the christian market. they definately have christian lyrics as far as i can see. check out http://oteilburbridge.com/

Ok. I know I'm really late on this, but only one person mentioned him so I will repeat it. The best bass player in rock was John Entwistle. Period. There are others once you go outside that genre, but it all starts there.

You cannot defnine it by the best without qualifying what style.
My personal favorites are in no particular order
Stu Hamm(check him out on the Joe Satriani live in San Francisco CD, totally blew me away!)
Jaco (his improv skill was beyond understanding)
Vic (though his style is not what I prefer)
Larry Graham (how he could hang on one note and get such a funk sound still astounds me)
Stanley Clarke (if Vic thought he was the best when he was growing up then he has to be considered top notch).
Steve Bailey (you have to listen to him to truly appreciate his work)
Arrlid Anderson (A bassist friend of mine turned me onto this guy, Arrlid plays stand up but the sounds he gets from the instrument are beyond description).
Billy Sheehan (one word for him GREAT!)
John Myung (once again not my style but you have to appreciate his ability)
Oteil Burbridge (I have only heard a little bit of his work but it outclasses 99.9% of the rock bassists in what I have heard I imagine his in depth work outclasses most of the rest of the 0.1%)
Daniel O'Dell - My teacher. He is not on a stage but if he can teach this no rhythym, no talent 41 yr old how to play well enough to get up in front of his church and play without totally making a fool of himself then Daniel is darn good!

Oteil sings on only a few, but when he does sing he does a great job, and Paul sings most of the Peacemakers stuff & ARU!
Oteil sings "Blue Eyed Saviour" and "Sweet Lord"

Hi all,
First time to post to the site, mostly I am a lurker and learner. In my 25 years of bass education, I have heard all the ones mentioned plus several more that deserve some recognition. We as bass players usually are in the back just thumping along only to be noticed by other bass players. Notice where Tai stands? Two men that have been left out of the list so far and have had more influence on the way we play than we will give them credit is the Greatest Bass Player of All Time - James Jamerson (Motown studio cat) and Bob Babbitt (Motown studio cat). You should spend some time with Motown from the 60's in your ears and then listen to anyone else. I tell you these guys really influenced how the bass sound for their time and till now. Victor is a bass player like no other and he give both of these men their props. Sometime pickup the DVD Standing in the Shadows of Motown for a great documentary with great sound, you guys can even see and hear Bootsy Collins.
Remember, keep your heart in the song and the bass line strong

I left the first Farewell Tour sick and waited 23 yrs to see them again. However, he passed away 12 days before I got to see in in Hershey PA. I had to settle for a tribute at the concert and watch his fingers fly via big screen, but then Pino Palladino, another of my faves, was his stand in. He fit right in.
Palladino is now in the John Mayer trio.

Yes! I won't try to work up a whole list, but Pino would definitely be on it somewhere. I'll admit, I just heard of him when he joined the John Mayer Trio, but his work with them is absolutely tasty. And he and Steve Jordan (drums) work so well together.

We have a bass player in Peterborough who appears to be the only one in the whole city (slight exaggeration) :D
I like going to see live bands. I have seen six recently in Peterborough. The same bass player plays in all six bands. I do not recall his name but he appears to be in great demand.
John Entwistle is a great bass player, but as one person stated, it all depends on the style and type of the band.

As far as bass players go, I'm not musician. I haven't even heard of some of the people here. I do kind of like bass that is almost played like lead.. it sounds very full.
So, I thought I'd mention a couple of bass players that I think play the bass almost as a lead that I like. Try not to laugh. LOL I like these guys because I actually notice the bass and like it.
Anyway, the first would be Tom from the band Maxeen. They aren't Christian, but he really plays the bass well.
The other would be John Warne of Relient K, formerly of Ace Troubleshooter. I think he played lead with Ace, though, not sure.
Of course I like Tai. :)

Indeed , I was wondering why it took that long to mention him, but then again - what is the progressive rock interest on a Third Day board. Hard to tell.
I would also add John Wetton, Geddy Lee, John Entwistle, and Tony Levin ( not sure if I saw him mentioned) Jack Bruce, Paul McCartney, and Johnas Reingold from a group called the Flower Kings ... oh and the late Bass player who played on all those Motown records, he was great.....

Wow, he sounds like a heck of a guy!
Neal's music is fantastic, and I love the touches that Randy George adds to it. He and Mike Portnoy really help Neal focus his craft with arrangements and whatnot.
John Myung should definitely be on everyone's short list of "best bassists." I would also include Chris Squire and Billy Sheehan, and of course Victor Wooten. Can't leave out Stu Hamm, either. The most musically gifted bassis is probably Jaco Pastorius.
Also, one who is solid but definitely underrated is Dave LaRue, who used to play with the Dixie Dregs, and was last seen (by me, anyway) accompanying John Petrucci (there's Dream Theater again!) on the G3 tour with Joe Satriani and Steve Vai.
For me, the most flamboyant showman is Sheehan, especially when playing with Vai.

Wetton is going out with the "original members of Asia" (Steve Howe, Carl Palmer, Geoff Downes, Wetton) this fall.
The set list is wider than just Asia, they will also play music "from each artist's past" which I guess would include Yes, ELP, King Crimson, UK, etc.

"O ya, the bass player from the "Funk Brothers". That was the band on all the old motown stuff. Watch the movie "Standing in the Shadows of Motown". It tells the bands story."
The bass players name is James Jamerson, he passed away in the early 80's. Bob Babbitt the other bassist is still touring with the Funk Brothers currently. They show is tremendous. They will also take time to talk with everyone who wants to meet them. The history they can tell you about the music it awesome.
Thanks and God Bless
Robert

just curious.... has anyone heard of Bunny Brunell?
After perusing this list of greats, why stop at 10? Another I haven't seen mentioned is Michael Anthony. Though I suppose it would be kinda hard to be noticed w/ someone like EVH playing lead in front of you.....

i've heard of him....i'm a big carvin supporter and he's a big endorser. even has his own signature model. but i don't think i can say i've ever heard him play, although one would assume he's decent.

I'm pretty much in the same boat as you, matt....I've only heard snippet or two and I'm mostly relying on info from trusted friend and bass teacher.

I agree with everyone listed, although some I've never heard play. I must nominate Adam Nitti to the list, however. I met him and took lessons from him before he became Steven Curtis Chapman's touring bass player in 2004. He also played on Casting Crowns' newest CD (in studio) and several other up and coming bands/artists CDs. He now lives in the Nashville area and if any up there is interested, you should check him out for lessons. He is one of the nicest and most humble guys you'll ever meet, and he is very knowledgable about all things musical! Check out his music and videos on his myspace page at:

PS I promise I'm not a compensated endorser . . . just a fan and friend.

Has anyone ever heard of John Entwistle of the who?
He is the best bassist ever. Maybe not the fastest...but he is one of them...and he is definelty the most influential. The greatest bass pioneer of all time.
He influenced Geddy Lee and Christ Squier, who are some of the other best bassist of the 60's and 70's.
Which prolly influenced todays music.

I seriously doubt that anyone on this entire messageboard other than a handful of people even listens to any of these bands:
Steve Rowe from MorTifIcaTioN.
Steve Harris from Iron Maiden.
Cliff Burton from early MetallicA.
John Mynug from Dream-TheateR.
Geddy Lee from RUSH.
and a few others that I can't think of right off hand.
