View Full Version : Effects chains

We've had several photo threads on pedalboards, so I figured it'd be cool to see the actual effects chains people use, so in this thread you can do the following:

a) Post your actual signal path, from guitar to amp/pa/etc.
b) If you have a cool setting for an effect you want to share, let us know about it!
c) If you like, post the gear you're using (amps, guitars, violins, etc.)
d) Also, if you like, go ahead and post a picture

Cool, let's have fun and rock on, y'all! :)

Here's my rig for your inspection. ;)

A)

Guitar
Dunlop Wah
Ibanez TS-7 Tubescreamer
Fulltone Fulldrive 2
BOSS Modded DS-1 Distortion
MXR Phase 90 Phaser
MXR DynaComp Compressor
Ernie Ball Junior Passive Volume Controller -> Korg Tuner
BOSS DD-5 Digital Delay -> BOSS FS-5U Tap Tempo
--> Output, main amp
--> Panning, secondary amp

B)

I absolutely love the combo of the FD2 and the Tubescreamer. With this setup, I can use the FD2 in Comp-Cut mode for anything from a nice shimmering overdrive to a very loud and smooth overdrive and can use the Tubescreamer for the more traditional crunchy sound.

My sound is very dependant on the delay; I would probably compare my style to a mix between Mark & Brad, as well as Sister Hazel's lead guitarist. I use a lot of delay for a lot of stuff to get some interesting sounds, so I found that having the volume pedal adds a lot to the tonal characteristics of my sound. The fact that I can mic two amps and use the panning on the delay is a nice characteristic, also.

C)

Currently I use:

Amps
Epiphone Galaxie 25 (Primary Amp)
Peavey Classic 30 (Secondary Amp)
Peavey Blazer 158 (Second monitor for Stage Noise)

Guitars
2002 Gibson Les Paul Studio Copper Top w/Gibson PAFs
2000 Epiphone Les Paul Special (strings heightened for slide-playing)
1998 Alvarez RD-30SC Acoustic w/Cutaway

Misc.
I use primarily George L. Cables for my setup.
I use a self-built pedalboard that fits nicely in an old suitcase :p
I use Kyser capos, Ernie-Ball .010s, and Dunlop picks

There ya go, have fun posting away!

Guitars:
Kendrick Townhouse w/Fralin PAF's or
Tom Anderson Classic w/active EMG's

Effects:
into my pedalboard and other effects(wired with George L's) :
Teese RMC3 wah
Crowther Audio Hotcake
Gammatronics Derangemaster Trouble Booster
Landgraff Dynamic Overdrive
Carl Martin compressor
Fulltone SupaTrem
Boss TU2 tuner
Maxon PH350 Phaser
Maxon AD80 Analog Delay
Carl Martin Delayla
Fulltone Choralflange
Framptone Amp Switcher
Victoria Reverberato (reverb/tremolo)
Korg SDD300 digital delay

Amps:
I either run one Vox wet and one dry and a/b them with my Moxon, or I'll a/b the Vox's depending on what I want to play.
'64 Vox AC30
'63 Vox AC30
Moxon 18 watt head

I'm probably selling my '74 Twin to a friend, my brother plays my Auble 110, and my Soldano SLO-100 has taken a backseat to the Moxon because the SLO-100 is so incredibly loud. I may sell the SLO-100 in the future in favor of a Mojave Plexi 45. Right now I'm awaiting delivery of a Bob Burt 2x12 with a greenback and G12H30 for the Moxon. I'd also like a Keeley compressor, and BJF Emerald Green Distortion Machine.
I'm still learning to use the SDD3000, but can honestly say it blows away every other delay I've heard for warmth, clarity and purity of signal, with the possible exception of the Moog delay. I use the +4db output on the 3000 to drive the Vox's.

2002 Taylor 614ce with 3-piece maple back, maple sides, and sitka spruce top

...going into... 1) Custom A/B switch with tuner out to Korg GT-3, 2) Ernie Ball Jr. Volume, 3) Barber Tone-Press (compressor), 4) Line 6 MM4 (two flavors of chorus, one of flange and one of phaser), 5) Line 6 DL4 (tape-echo with progressively longer delay lengths), 6) Whirlwind DI box>PA system

The Tone-Press is the most beautiful compressor I've ever played my Taylor through, the MM4 has great chorus options, and the DL4 with it's tap-tempo is simply a God-send due to it's limitless flexibility.

Guitar
Ernie Ball Vol Jr. -> Boss TU-12H Tuner
Dunlop Crybaby Wah
Ibanez TS-7 Tubescreamer
Boss DD-3 Delay
Ibanez CF-7 Chorus/Flanger
Ibanez PT-9 Phaser
Amp

My guitars:
1998 Fender Standard Strat
2002 Epi Les Paul Standard Goldtop
2001 Alvarez RD20S Acoustic

My Amps:

Crate GX15R (i NEVER use it, but its there)
Marshall MG250DFX

Settings:
My tubescreamer is set flat, just to get a balanced overdrive tone out of it, and i find that (with my strat at least) i get a fairly bluesy tone out of it...
my DD-3, well, i just adjust the delay time accordingly, im not sure WHAT the settings are...
the CF-7 usually stays in Chorus mode, with just a SLIGHT chorus, good for the clean tones of the amp
and the PT-9 is always in a slow phase... i actually started using it just to nail the phasing/flanging speed on Philmore's cover of "living on a prayer" so it has pretty much stayed at that setting (did i mention im not big on modulation effects? ;))

I have my marshall's clean channel set to the factory recommended setting for "bright clean" because i LOVE the way it sounds with my LP... and the drive channel has the bass and treble set flat, with the gain and mid contour controls set to, well, however i feel like them sounding, but sometimes i just run everything on that channel flat, just because it gets a slightly distored, punk tone at that level, with the Les Paul. I usually add a SLIGHT bit of reverb to the clean channel.

I have a boss pedalboard (i got it cuz the onboard power supply is convenient, lol) I use kyser as well as Glider capos, ernie ball super slinkys and fender super bullets and Elixir Light Polywebs (soon to try out nanowebs) (on the Alvarez), and i dont USUALLY use a pick, but i have a stash of Dunlop .60 MMs and a couple dunlop 1MMs... as for cables... i use road hog and... some cable made for guitar center that they gave me for practically free when i got my amp, cuz i needed a new cable to run from my effects to my amp... i also run my effects through the loop on the marshall, but for no real reason. sorry for the rambling... did that off the top of my head.

Well, when I get the chance to play through my Fender Evil Twin (which is rare these days...too big for what I do at church, and WAY to loud for my apartment), here is my chain:

GUITARS:
Fender '57 Vintage Reissue Strat
Fender Strat, 1978 Hardtail
Fender Strat, '68 Reissue (w/ Texas Special Pickups)
Taylor 310CE Acoustic/Electric

Into:
Vox Wah

Into:
Fender Twin Amp

Utilizing the effect loop, I then go out to:
Boss OD-2 Turbo Overdrive - For warm OD, basically to get a dirty clean sound...just used to give my clean sound a little edge
Sovtek Big Muff Pi (the big green one) - This is my main distortion pedal, and main shaper of my tone.
Boss DS-1 Distortion - Very rare that this thing ever even gets turned on. Basically only used if I want some crazily dirty sound.
Boss MT-2 Metal Zone - My #2 Distortion. If I am not using the Muff for my distortion, I am using this. Crazy distortion, wih enough definition to do what I want.
MXR Phase 90 Phaser - I use this puppy on just about everything. If I can't have any chorus, I use this phaser as my substitute.
Boss Equilizer - I use this to cut my mids an boost my highs asd lows...I don't care for midrange...

Hopefully soon, I will get back on my project, which was to build my own chorus pedal based on the Fender Princeton Chorus amp's chorus. I have one of the amps, and I have the schematics...just a question of finding the time to make the design mods and put it all together.

Now, if I am playing at church, here is my rig:

GUITARS:
Fender '57 Vintage Reissue Strat
Fender Strat, '68 Reissue (w/ Texas Special Pickups)
Taylor 310CE Acoustic/Electric

Into:
Sovtek Big Muff Pi

Into:
Line 6 POD

Directly into the board. If I am playing my bass, I just go straight to the board and that's that. For guitar work, I use the Muff when I need a little extra "umph", and I tweak the amp settings on the POD to get my overall tone like I want it. Simple but effective. Now, if I can just save the money to get the POD foot controller, I'll be set.

EDIT:
Forgot to mention:
I use an SM-58 for vocals (want to get an SM-57, because I like the mics better), and I have an E-Bow hanging from my mic stand that I use every now and then. For strings, I use GHS Boomers (.010s) on my electrics, and Elixir Lights (.012s) on my acoustic. I use Dunlop Tortex Picks, .73 mm (the yellow ones). And my favorite cords so far are the Horizon Vintage braided cords, in 20 ft. lengths. I also use Keyser capos when I feel the need...

The Les Paul into..

Ernie Ball Jr Volume-Boss TU-2 Tuner in tuner out

Marshall BB-2 Overdrive
Marshall ED-1 Compressor
Boss CE-5 Chorus

Fender Deville for an amp.

I think to finish off my pedal board for now I'm gonna get a Jekyll & Hyde and an MM4. In the long run I want a strat of some sort, but I'd rather have the pedals how I want them before I go with a new guitar because the Epiphone does it's job just playing in church every week (though I've been playing the Taylor a lot more since I got it a month ago).

So yeah, that's the current setup for now, but talk to me after my birthday this month and we'll see...

E.Blues and gmflash,

What are your opinions on the Texas Special pups? I have tried to incorporate my SRV Strat into my band but they just don't sound good playing CCM. Now for blues, they sound really good but I may change them out for some Fender Fat 50's or something else. Are there any CCM bands that use Strats? Wonder if they use stock pups?

Thanks,

Jeff

oh on a side note... Strings GHS Boomer .10's just about everything. DR tite's .9 on the tele... I'm not sure which pickup(s) are the Texas SPecials or the Dimarzio and I think on is stock too.... They're getting changed to rio grande big bottom sets.... NO2. is my SRV tribute strat. as far as CCM it's just gonna be based on your band's style... if your looking for a nice clean sound yeah the specials aren't gonna be the best. I'd recommend the Lace Sensor golds... I had a strat with those in it and it kicked a lot of butt, had guys thinking it was like some awesome american guitar but it wasn't. I have 6 electric guitars, each sound different, the song depends on the guitar which is used.... I think the point I'm getting at is CCM or not I'm sure there is a song that the SRV strat would sound great on, reguardless of what others think or believe....

I don't exactlly play "CCM" I honestlly don't know what that is and what defines it. I don't think it would be anything like praise and worship. Most of my music is just based off of my personal experiences the good and the bad, and people seem to enjoy it and feel some sort of connection to it... that's all i ask from my music. I found a quote that pretty much sums me up all together.

"I'm not all that much of a praying person, and I'm definately not a religious person, but I do consider myself a spiritual person and a Christian. I guess I might be a C-minus Christian, but I am one." -Johnny Cash

Well, I like them, but they are a bit hot sometimes. I played the Strat with the Texas Specials in it Wednesday night for Chi Alpha at our church, and it worked well. I was using it with the POD set to a slightly driven Tube Preamp setting with delay/chorus, and I had the Big Muff set pretty dirty, playing rythym support for our acoustic player and doing lead work. But it was less CCM style stuff, and more "P&W" style stuff.

I can get good cleans out of my Texas Specials, but it is harder to do. They are very hot, and tend to want to drive...but if you are going for a driven sound, they are great...

I gotta say, though, I agree with E.Blues on this one. Music is music, and just go with what you think sounds good. It is about feel and what you hear that you like, not about the style. Just like we say there is a genre of music that is "Worship Music." Well, you know, that is a fallacy of thinking, because it is all worship to God, if we are doing it in an attitude of worshiping Him. Just my thoughts. So go with what you like, what you can make work, and what sounds good.

Best of luck,
Stephen

Here's what I use...

Guitars:
2001 PRS Santana SE (Teal/Green)
Ibanez JX70 Acoustic/Electric (Teal/Green)
-to-
Pedal Board
(Monster Pro-1000 cables from guitar to pedal board and board to amp)
Boss TU-2 Tuner
Dunlop 535Q Wah
Boss BD-2 w/ Keeley Phat Mod
Marshall Shredmaster
Ibanez CF-7 Chorus/Flanger
Ibanez Soundtank Tremolo
Boss DD-6 Delay
(All the above effects are on a MPS Pedal Pad with George L's connecting the pedals)
-to-
Amp
(I usually put a SM57 on the amp that goes to the PA)
Fender Stage 100

Extra Effects - (extra pedals that I sometimes swap out with different pedals currently on the board)
Marshall BB-2 Bluesbreaker
Ibanez TK999 Tube King
Ibanez Pue5 Tube
Morley Bad Horsie Wah
Dunlop 535 Chrome Wah
Boss OC-2 Octave

Etc...
EBow
Dunlop Glass and Metal Slide
Fender Heavy and Extra Heavy Picks
Elixir Nanoweb Light Strings on both Acoustic and Electric guitars

Settings, Likes, Dislikes...

I almost always use some sort of delay behind whatever I am playing, it's just kind of become a part of my personal playing style. Sometimes I use the BD-2 as more of a boost with very slight distortion, when I add the Shredmaster to that I get a really nice warm tube overdrive type sound (at least the closest I can get without a tube amp).

I've been really happy with the Santana, for the price ($400) it sounds great. I've done a little work to it here and there, but otherwise it suits my needs. I'm really looking for a new amp though because the Stage 100 just doesn't fit with what I need. It gives me way more high end than I want (comes off just sounding brittle and downright crappy at loud volumes).

Why exactly would I sell ANY of my guitars just to buy a "TUBE" amp??? You want to know how I got those guitars? By busting my rear 48-50 hours a week! If I want a tube amp I'll get it the same way. I will never understand what it is with you guys selling your guitars!?!?! All I can say is this. If you are not aboslutely so in love with a guitar that you could never part with it, DO NOT BUY IT!!! You will never connect with it and it will just be a waste of you time and money. There is not a single guitar in that line up that I could not play without. That is how seriously I take my craft. My money goes to bills and the rest goes to guitars. GOD didn't give me a gift so I could take it lightly... You really have to pour yourself into those guitars if you are going to be great. I hope you guys get what I am trying to say. They are not tools... They should be a part of who you are... Peace...

Sometimes my stuff has attitude problems too, and there will be nothing I can do about how bad they sound, for some dumb reason. lol. Its like it'll sound good for 2 or 3 weeks for church, and then all of a sudden its just crappy sounding. Its wierd. Its not like it gets bumped around or anything, cuz I don't usually bring home my electric stuff, just the acoustic. Cuz if I want, I can go to the church and play with that stuff anyway, so it'd just a waste of time and energy usually, cuz half of the time, I'm too lazy to get all that stuff out anyway. lol.

I didn't mean to upset you, but when it comes to tone, tube amps are head over heels above solidstate. Just like analog pedals are better than digital stuff. Most of your tone is from the amp. I believe E Blues even said this, a cheap guitar thru a really good amp will sound alot better than an expensive guitar thru a cheap amp. So a good tube amp would be an important piece of the tone puzzle. The major piece!

I don't know who you are referring to selling their guitars, I have never sold one of mine yet, but things change. I bought a Gibson LP Studio, liked it alot and then played a '58 Reissue LP. Liked it much better and bought it. Now I am considering selling the Studio or changing the pups, but theres nothing wrong with selling it to aquire other gear.

I have a different opinion about a chunk of wood with wires strung on it. I could live without any of them, because even though I enjoy playing tremendously, my relationship with God, my wife and kids and my job are much more important. They make guitars every day, just like the ones I have and just like yours. You can always buy another one. I couldn't replace my 13 year old that enjoys playing music with me or my 10 year old that loves sports or even my 8 year old that prays as well as alot of adults. He even went to the alter at church Sunday, talk about a love for God!

My apologies if I offended you, but once you get a good tube amp, you'll wonder why you didn't get one long ago.

a decent amp is part of the tonal key, but YOU are the major piece of the tonal spectrum.... I did an open mic by myself before my black strat got stolen, busting out some old clapton tunes and people were in awe coz i had that early 90's clapton tone... Solid State amp.

Padre and I have played at this one spot in WV where it was like an Open Mic night with head lining bands.... the guys before us cleared the place out, we started playing brought everyone back in, including the bands head lining, and they're mouths dropped when they saw what we were playing.... They were baffled at how our amps sounded the way the did coz they were solid state.

also our buddy greg has an original 59 bassman up in the "upper sanctum" I would think he would gig with that... but what does he use???? Tech 21 Trade Mark 60's....

I'm still a traditionalist as far as tube vs. solid state goes, but each has their advantages and disadvantages... hence why i'm going with both in the long run.... but our guitars aren't those 1000 dollar models.... they're all imports, and Greg who owns 007 of the 30th anniversary Hamers, a Robin Wrangler, a Hamer Duotone and other various "boutique" guitars along with his vintage 59 Gibby LP and other various vintage instruments, says that is one cool guitar, and don't get rid of it, I feel honored. As I feel honored to be one of the few and proud that own the checkered board cases....

I found out this weekend that my great uncle has a 1952 Telecaster he bought brand new for $187.50 fifty-two years ago.

First of all you did not offend me. Couldn't if you tried... The thing is. I have a family and I have great friends. Never said my guitars mean more to me than them. On the other hand, my guitars are not chunks of wood with strings on them. Each one is a part of me. Each one has told a different piece of the story of my life. Most of it was the building of my relationship with the Father and my Lord. To part with them would be like parting with my voice. Parting with the memories of my life. Christ had the power of his words. The power of His love through words. I have the power of His love through them...

As far as the amp goes. British made Laney's are not "cheap" amps. It cost as much as a tube amp. I would love to have a tube amp. I just have not found one that I am totally happy with. Right now I am a huge fan of the Traynor YCV 80. I have no intentions of parting with a part of myself to get it tho. Don't take all of this as an insult. It's not! I just want everyone to know where I am coming from...

how do you find the holy grail? I've been wanting a reverb box and I';ve had my erye on one of them...
ah to ever have all the stomp boxes and guitars and amps I've wanted.......
I'm tempted to not post my gear, I like my pedals, but I'm badly in need of a new guitar and amp...

guitar --
Vox v847 wwah wah
electro Harmonix big muff US reissue
Dan Electro Daddy O overdrive
Boss BF2 Flanger
--Amp.

My guitars are a squier strat that I've had since I was 15(I'm now 22) that's badly in need of retirement. I'm aiming to get an ES335 style guitar(I'd love a Gibson but can't see my self affording it while I'm still at university) probably and epihone sheraton

I've also got an Epiphone PR5E I kinda like it but the guy at the shop gave me the impression that ity was a solid top which I found out was untrue which made me pretty mad.,.. I might replace it with somthing else.

I've got a bass, a classical guitar, and a couple of other acoustics too...

My amp's a fender power chorus. it's an 80's solid state, and I also really need a good tube amp. guitar's more pressing though.

misc..
I've got a boss ds1 distortion that the big muff replaced at xmas

that's about it. not very impressive, a rig that's still very much in it's infancy.

I'm a new member here, but have been playing guitar for around 18 years. Boy, some of you really have some $$ wrapped up in gear! I only owned an acoustic until about 7 years ago, and with a growing family it takes me a while to save my beans to buy a piece of equipment. But after about 6 different amps and a handful of acoustic guitars, here's my current setup, which I'm pretty happy with for the most part.

Guitars:
Charvel Surfcaster (Semi-Hollow, Seymour Duncan JB in bridge, Kent Armstrong hot lipstick in neck)
Fender Standard Strat (replaced pickups with lace sensors, red in bridge, gold in middle and blue in neck)
Taylor 414CE with Fishman prefix blender preamp

Pedals:
Boss DD-5
Arion Stereo Chorus
Tech 21 TRI O.D. (rarely use except for Speaker Sim when recording direct from the Mesa)
Homemade Signal Booster
Homemade A/B box
Homemade Effects loop switcher (which I used with a previous amp, don't need it now)

Amps:
Mesa Boogie F-50
Vox Valvetronix 30W (a toy to play with...also has an attenuator built into it, making it much more family friendly late at night)

Other:
Boss BR-864 Digital 8-track recording unit
A Cheapo Squier Bass that I use for recording

I don't use a lot of effects, but would like to get a better chorus one of these days and am planning to get a good overdrive box in January...probably either a Boss OD-3 or a Danelectro Wasabi Overdrive. I'd seriously think about the Ibanez tube screamer, but the Boss has more bottom end and produces a more pleasing overdrive. I want to test out the Wasabi, but the on-line sample seemed promising. I'm also looking at a reverb box, probably the Boss RV-5, but I'm not fully decided on that yet.

Otherwise, I'm setting my sights on a Fender American Deluxe Ash Stratocaster with the Cherry Burst finish...though it could take me a couple of years to get there...and who knows, by then I'll probaby want something else!

So lucky................i know im jealous...beautiful rigs.............i want to boost my tone but..........u got to have money to do that

You don't have to spend big bucks to get decent tone (and it's certainly true that spending big bucks doesn't guarantee good tone)...just be very selective and spend your money on the right things. The most important pieces in shaping your tone will be pickups, amplifier and speaker. The bugger of the matter is that in most cases you cannot return pickups or speakers, so it's difficult to just "try them out", but do your homework, find out what your favorite guitarists use. While many aspects of a guitar play into the tone, carefully switching out the pickups on a decent quality lower end guitar will sound pretty close to the more expensive guitars for a fraction of the cost. At the same time, try to avoid doing the "trade up" thing too many times, you lose money each time you do that. In some cases, you may be better off just waiting until you can afford what you really want. And don't spend too much time second guessing your decision after you've made your purchase, thinking maybe you should have gotten B instead of A. Chances are if you had bought B, you'd be wondering whether you should have gotten A instead. It's human nature...you know...the grass is always greener on the other side.

And try to avoid buying novelty items that you won't use much. Effects are cool, but if money is tight, carefully evaluate how much you'll use it before you buy it and buy only those that you know you will use consistently (for me it's only chorus, delay and reverb). Once you have the guitar and amp setup you want, then you can add the spicier effects if you want. I keep thinking about buying a wah pedal, but honestly, I wouldn't use it that much. I borrowed a friends for a couple weeks and only hooked it up a couple of times, and then only used it for a few minutes. Helped me to realize that if I bought one, it would mostly just sit around (and besides, if I ever want to use it, he'll gladly lend it to me again.) The same would be true for me of a phaser or flanger pedal.

I would also give a word of caution to people buying digital modelling equipment. Just be aware that anything digital loses value quickly. The technology is always advancing, and whenever new technology finds its way to the market place, the old technology loses value. You can spend $400 on a piece of gear today and in a couple of years you'll be doing good to get $150 for it on e-bay. (Just do a search on e-bay for the POD 2.0, or worse yet, the Johnson J-Station or any number of similar items.) This is not to say you shouldn't buy them, I own one myself, but just don't plan on selling it in a couple years to upgrade to something better, you might not be able to give it away. Unfortunately, most gear loses value, but some much more than others.

Lastly, it helps to take the mindset that you don't have to get everything at once. While it'd be great to do that, for many of us it's just not realistic without going into debt...which I do not advocate. 7 years ago all I had was a Sigma Guitars SDR-28 acoustic that I had paid about $400 for about 7 years earlier with college graduation money. And while my gear collection is still pretty modest, I'd never have dreamed at that point I'd have all the gear I have now...and my budget for music gear has only been $10/week this whole time, and an occasional gift of money for birthday or Christmas. And while I'd still like to own a nice Les Paul and/or a more upscale Strat, I've got plenty of years to save up for that!

Okay...much has changed since I posted my rig in March...and I mean alot. Changes and additions in bold.

A)

Guitar
Dunlop Wah
MXR DynaComp Compressor
Fulltone Fulldrive 2 Overdrive
Guyatone OD-2 Overdrive
Ibanez TS-7 Tubescreamer
BOSS BD-2 Blues Driver
Ernie Ball Junior Passive Volume Controller -> Korg Tuner
MXR Phase 90 Phaser
MXR MicroAmp Signal Boost
Line6 ToneCore Tap Tremelo
BOSS DD-5 Digital Delay -> BOSS FS-5U Tap Tempo
--> both the Main & Panning outs go to
Line6 DL-4 Delay Modeler (presets on rythym tap, ping-pong, and sweep)
--> L out to Epiphone Galaxie 25
--> R out to Fender Blues Deluxe (if running stereo)

B)

I absolutely love the combo of the FD2 and the Blues Driver...the Tubescreamer is very close to being extinct in this setup. Some people wonder why I have 3 or 4 overdrives and no distortions, but it's pretty simple. I play alot of church music (think Chris Tomlin, David Crowder), so I don't need anything really heavy. What's more, the FD2 is so versatile in Comp-Cut that it can easily boost the Blues Driver into a very heavy sound if I need it.

The other reason I have 4 drive effects ( 5 if you count the micro amp ) is because I'm picky. They each have a different sound, which is the other thing about the worship music we play ... it requires different tones for different songs ( the micro-amp always stays on to add back som signal sucked by effects pedals. ) The only real standard I hold myself to with effects is that I must be able to play any song with nothing more than a guitar, one overdrive (or an amp's overdrive) and an amp. After that, all the rest is for accenting my tone, not creating it.

C)

Currently I use:

Amps
Epiphone Galaxie 25 (Primary Amp)
Peavey Classic 30 (Secondary Amp)
Peavey Blazer 158 (Second monitor for Stage Noise)

Guitars
2002 Gibson Les Paul Studio Copper Top w/Gibson PAFs
2000 Epiphone Les Paul Special (strings heightened for slide-playing)
1998 Alvarez RD-30SC Acoustic w/Cutaway

Misc.
I use primarily George L. Cables & Monster Cables for my setup.
I use a custom-built pedalboard made by NYC Pedalboards (http://www.nycpedalboards.com)
I use Kyser capos, Elixir or Gibson .010s, and Dunlop picks

If I were to play live ever, I would still go with the Les Paul and a good stack for stage presence.

If you start playing live remember the fact that you'll have to transport and carry your rig with you. As someone who gigged a couple times a month for about three years, I can tell you that I don't want to haul a stack around with me..or even a half-stack!!! My Mesa Boogie F-50 combo weighs in at 50 lbs. and I get tired of lugging that thing around!!

I also like the Marshall sound, but the one thing that frustrates me immensely is that Marshall has not learned how to package that sound in an affordable compact combo. None of the Marshall all-tube combos on the market now appeal to me. While the DSL 40 is affordable (by Marshall standards, anyway), it sounds like you're cutting a tin can with a buzz saw...nothing like the DSL 50 Head. And I imagine the TSL 122 sounds decent, but not only does it weigh in at 67 lbs, the thing costs $1800!! And I was not impressed with the TSL 601 I demoed once...maybe it was that particular model and I should try another one.

Now I did try out a JCM 900 50 Watt head last week at my local guitar shop, and it sounded great, but again, it's a huge head, and all the JCM 900 combos that I've seen are 2x12's that weigh a ton as well. So, as much as I like the Marshall sound, I'm sticking with my Mesa, at least until Marshall comes out with an all tube 1x12 combo that sounds good!

The Jubilee series are the best amps Marshall has put out since the 70's. The 2x12 combo's sound awesome. Slash can play any amp in the world, but he still plays 50 watt Jubilee's, and there's a reason for that.
50 watts is more than enough for anyone unless you play stadiums or other huge venues.

There are also many boutique manufacturers whose amps can be found used at really good prices. These guys build amps because they love to do it, and the quality is noticably higher than larger manufacturers (Marshall, Fender...etc.).

If you're looking for a smaller combo that has a big stack sound I have a friend who just bought a Mesa Boogie Studio 22 (kind of a smaller brother to the Mark IV). It's a really good sounding amp and it has extra eq controls on the amp (aside from the normal bass, mid, treble).

Randy,

A little more of my opinion on Marshalls. I played a DSL 50 watt head through a Marshall 4x12 cab a few months ago. The first channel was awesome...nice clean and the crunch with the gain maxed was really sweet...and while I would have needed a little more time with it, it almost seemed like there was enough gain on the first channel to play a lot of rock...not modern high gain stuff, but I felt it got close to the 80's hard rock sounds. But the second channel was unimpressive. Basically, Marshall employs diode clipping to get those high gain sounds, and that's why you get that buzzy and thin sound at the higher gain settings. But the first channel was pure tube distortion, which is why it was so sweet. I just keep thinking they should package that first channel in an amp and I'd buy it (provided it doesn't cost more than $1000-$1200...I'll pass on the new JTM-45 reissue).

And I would second what Ehud Elijah said...don't let them talk you into a 100 Watt amp...it's way more power than you'll ever need. My 50 Watt amp is SOOOOOO loud it's not even funny. Chances are that you will mic your amp if you start gigging, in which case 50W is more than plenty...I've never turned my master volume up past 10 o'clock when gigging, at home it's around 9 o'clock...which is even really too loud (however my wife will usually humor me for an hour or so at that volume). At 50W, my amp is too loud for me to really get the amp hot enough to overdrive the power tubes, which is a little frustrating (unless I buy an attenuator, which I'm considering)...fortunatel y, the pre-amp distortion sounds good to me, so I survive!! :) But seriously, even 30 Watts is more than enough to gig with if they are tube watts. The Matchless DC-30 is "only" 30 watts, but they'll blow you out the door!!

Also, the F-series has the EQ that Snap refers to built into the amp as well with the Contour Switch...only on the F-series, it is pre-set to a "V" instead of being adjustable by the user (Randall Smith says everyone just set it to a "V" anyway, so that was his justification for removing the actual EQ controls on the F-series. But there are a number of older 22 Watt Mesa's you may want to consider, they would still be plenty loud I would imagine, but you would more easily be able to get some power tube distortion.

All this for what it's worth...ultimately you must decide what's best for you...good luck! :)

I use a custom-built pedalboard made by NYC Pedalboards (http://www.nycpedalboards.com)
Those pedalboards look nice. I have an SKB powered board and I like that. One thing I'm noticing on that site and here is that people are putting their volume/wah pedals on the right side of the board. Am I the only one who puts them on the left? The reason I put it on the left is because I put the whole board to the right of my mic stand and I sometimes want to put my right foot on the pedal when singing. I could have the board in front of the mic stand and have the boom angled more to go over it but I don't like that much either.

Are these pedal boards really worth the $$? I find it hard to shell out $150-$300 just for a board to hold my pedals...and I've rarely (if ever) seen any pros using them...most of them have homemade pedal boards that are basically just variations on a plank of plywood.

I recently took a piece of plywood and screwed a power strip onto it and plan to velcro my pedals onto it. Of course, I've only got about 4 or 5 pedals, but I can't imagine that I'd ever shell out that much money for a manufactured pedal board.

For what I do, it's definitely worth the $200. Mine is two-tiered so I can get to the 2nd row of pedals easier, as well as hide my 3 power supplies. What's more, the board gets trailered all the time and I needed the hard case to protect all the stuff inside. Plus, it gets fixed for free for the lifetime of the board.

I got my SKB PS-25 used on Ebay for a good price and it was practically mint. I didn't have adapters for all my pedals so I figured the powered board would make sense. One problem I have is that if I power my BOSS CE-5 Chorus Ensemble through the board it makes a lot of noise so I ended up buying a separate adapter for that. Everything else is powered through the board. If I bought 4 more adapters and made my own board I'd probably be in it for as much $$$ as I was for the board. Personally I think the board was worth it for me. However, there's nothing wrong with doing it your way either. Whatever works best for you. :)

Yeah, you don't want to rely on batteries for any reverb or delay effects. Currently I've got my Boss DD-5 and a cheap Chorus pedal using adapters, but overdrive pedals are pretty easy on batteries, so I'm using a battery for that. I'll be getting a Boss GE-7 here in the next couple of months, and I'm assuming it'll be pretty easy on batteries, too. If not, I'll probably do an adapter for that, too. I've also got a homemade boost pedal, but batteries last forever in that thing...then again, I made it only for battery use. Besides, I really only used it in my effects loop as a solo volume boost when I was gigging, and I'm not gigging now, so it will probably just sit around and gather dust.

The one thing I noticed that some of these pedal boards had that could be useful in a gigging situation was the ability to have two separate and switchable loops, but again, since I'm not gigging I don't really need it.

Thanks for your input.

Euphoric

Yeah, I haven't gigged for a long time either.

I don't know if it's just me but it seems like those pedals sound better with batteries. ??? Maybe it's in my mind. Has anyone tried those 9 volts they sell for $6.99 in Musicians Friend (I think). They were supposed to last 4 times longer or something like that. I wonder if they are worth it.

I just joined to see what others in the church rock music scene are doing.

I play a Peavy T-60 or an ovation through a Fender Cyber-Twin Se to get about any sound you like. Ive only had it three weeks but it is pretty incredible. With the midi foot board it's pretty easy to set up and use. Now if I could just get the tab for the wire cd I'm set.

I only own one pedal!!! :( :( :( The church has a chorus pedal which I rarely use, because it is meant for acoustics and not solid body electrics like mine. It ends with this discusting noise.
I have a grunge pedal, which by the way is perfect for all you guys who love metal. However, the grunge is too heavy for my church because most of the believers are strict and conservative. So last time at church, I decided to use the chorus to soften up my guitar and then rigged it in to the grunge.....my soul was satisfied. It sounded sweet.

The Elms came and played at my church once, and I thought their guitar player's pedalboard was really funny! He didn't have anything on it except for a tuner and a Tubescreamer. The way he plays though, he didn't need anything else!

His tone was really, really good too. From what I could tell, he only used the tubescreamer for solos. His tone came from his amp being turned up really loud. It was a Marshall but I don't remember the model it was. If anyone knows, please tell me.

I on the other hand really like pedals and wish I owned a few more of them.

I love my Visual Sound Jekyll and Hyde and my VS H20 Chorus/Echo. I run from my SG Standard (Heritage Cherry) into my DigiTech Metal Master, then into the J&K, DigiTech HotRod, DigiTech Overdrive, H20, and then lastly my DigiTech Phaser. I'm in desperate need of a pedal board though - packing and unpacking all this stuff is a pain, but I don't want to spend money on a good board when there are so many more pedals to collect! :D

My amp is a Fender Hotrod Deville 410.
I also play a Taylor Big Baby, in which I had installed a pickup, through a small Crate, and a Fender Fat Strat (which has taken the back seat since I got the SG).
I used to play my Carlo Robelli bass more often, but not so much anymore. More of a guitar guy. For the bass, though, I have a Behringer BX600.

I've used and enjoyed the shredmaster for about three years now. What first got me interested in it was that Johnny Greenwood from Radiohead uses one.

I use it a lot for lighter distortion applications and I like using it with some of my delay settings. My Marshall Shredmaster and Ibanez Pue5 Tube have been all the distortion I need for a variety of songs for the past couple of years.

After much procrastinating I finally have a pic of my (or borrowed) stuff...

Guitars: Late 60's early 70's Ventura Les Paul copy electric
2004 Samick Acoustic Electric (Koa Wood)

Effects Board/Signal Path: Crybaby 535q - Peavey Hotfoot Distortion - Digitech rp200A (selling it to get a Jekylle and Hyde *Hopefully*) - DOD Stereo Chorus (Long story behind that pedal, funny too) - Boss DD-20 Delay (New pedal I got for Christmas) ------

Amp(not mine): Peavey Classic Chorus 130

-----Back to footswitch for the amp. Amp has onboard overdrive, vibrato, chorus, and reverb.

Hey whats up. I'm new but here's my set up.

Guitars- Gibson Les Paul Standard and soon to be Taylor 414ce.

Board- Ernie Ball Passive Volume>Dunlop Crybaby>MXR SuperComp>Fulltone Fulldrive 2> Ibanez TS-9> Line 6 MM4 (analog chorus, phase 90, bias trem, vibrato or flanger)> Line 6 DL4 (analog with mod, analog, either auto volume or reverse). Powered by a 1Spot with 2 daisey chains on a home built pedal board. I also leave my extra junk on the board (ie picks, slides, ebow). I'm thinking about getting a deticated delay just for reverse parts but other than that I may be the only guitarist that is done buying new pedals.

Amps- Currently running a Fender Pro Tube Concert Reverb with 4 10s and 50 watts but i want to upgrade and downsize to a Vox AC30 212CC. Those are sweet amps.

I mainly play lead guitar for an acoustic player ( kinda like Chris Tomlin's lead player, subtle but good) and it's a blast.

For worship team I plug my board into a Line 6 PODxt right into the PA. That way stage volume is still low, but i still sound like i'm playing through a guitar amp not just a pa.

That sounds like a simple but versatile set up. Are you using the V Amp for amp modeling and effects? Can you signal out to the board and to an amp at the same time?

The V-amp has 2 direct outs built in, so yes you can split the signal.

Here is the signal path:

Ibanez->Nady Wireless->RTB2000->Vamp Pro (using the 2 built in direct line outs) -> floor box #17 & #18 (at my church :) )

When I can wrestle the digital camera away from my wife, I'll post a pic of my rack. It also contains a Vamp Bass for when I feel like speaking 5 string. In which case the whole thing is the same, just bass where the pro is.

I know that Behringer can be considered cheap, but, guys! The sounds I get out of that one rack unit as opposed to having to mess around with pedals is awesome. For all the 30-somethings out there, go try one and select the rectified hi gain setting and see if it doesnt take you back to the ol' arena rock days!

(also, set up time now is however long it it takes me to plug into 2 XLR's in the floor!)

Hey thanks!

The board was built using all scraps from other projects - 1/2 ply for the top and bottom. The edge of the base is 1x2. The lid sides is 1x4. It's enough space with the lid on to put my guitar strap and cables in there along with music for that Sunday's service.

... as for the pedals - all the Boss boxes at the bottom (except the tuner) are Franklin Mods - they ROAR!!! The H20 provides some really nice Floyd type tones in the neck of a strat. It's not the biggest board - but it suits my needs very well.

Soon the Behringer Trem will be replaced by a Franklin mod TR-2. :D

Dunlop CryBaby (already have, maybe I'll change it for Vox later)

Well I've had a couple changes to my gear since my last post so here she goes.

guitars: Gibson Les Paul Standard (honey burst), Taylor 514ce L10 (natural mahogany and beautiful), Soon to add a Fender Tele of some kind. Trying to decide if I should back up my les paul with a custom or deluxe or if i should go for something different like a highway one or thinline. Seriously your expert opinions would be really appreciated.

Effects: Crybaby Classic>Fulltone Fulldrive 2>Boss BD-2>Ernie Ball VP jr. with boss TU-2 of the tuner out >Line 6 MM-4 (Tri Chorus,Soft Bias Trem, Fast Hard Bias Trem, Uni-vibe>Line 6 Dl-4 ( Memory Man, Stereo Delay, Rhythmic Delay)> Boss DD-3.
All that mounted on a Mks Pedal Pad and wired with Georgle L's.

Amps: Vox AC-30CC2. Wow this is by for the most amazing peice of gear that i own (and I own too much) The tone is SOOO good. I don't regret not getting the blues because now i have the classic Vox tone but a little bit different and unique so thats cool.
Line 6 Pod xt- For chuch and practice mostly. but now it probably won't get much use.

Misc. Ebow (pretty new, still getting used to it but i can definatly see use for it.)
Dunlop Pyrex Slide
Gibson Brass Slide
Kyser Capos
Levy's Leather guitar Straps
Gator Grip 1mm guitar picks.

It's all powered by one Voodoo Labs Pedal Power 2 and one Dunlop DC Brick. It's actually really cool because I can plug the AC adaptor from the DC Brick into the outlet on the Pedal Power so I end up with only one power cable coming out the back of the board. I was real excited when I found that out...it helps keep the board neat.

Tom, you must play REALLY loud, you got all your level knobs near max, and a fulldrive in comp-cut with those settings is LOUD. Anyway, beatiful board.

Haha, yeah I push my amp pretty hard. You can disregard a couple of those knob positions, though, since I had just cleaned the pedals so the knobs were a bit out of whack. Still, I usually do run with the Fulldrive around 10-11 o'clock with the boost varying (I can get some cool & strange overloaded sounds pushing all that gain from the FD2's boost into the Jekyll & Hyde). Normally I run the Jekyll & 12 o'clock, the Hyde all the way up, and the Blues Driver at whatever level matches the Fulldrive's setting...

Where do you get all the noise from, the fuzz? The only time I get noise is when I have my Xotic BB Preamp on full gain, even then the noise isn't that bad.

How do you like your X3Live so far?

I had to sell my XTLive in the pictures above to pay for wedding expenses. But my new wife bought me a regular PODxt for Christmas. I thought about the X3, but it was more expensive, and aside from the included model packs, I didn't really see anything the X3 offered over the XT that I needed.

E. Blues Gomer
12-19-2007, 12:42 PM
x3 live is pretty cool... it has an built in fx loop for your standard stomp boxes. the ability to plug in a guitar, bass and vocals, and any combination of two instruments. Right now I've just been messing with the guitar side. USB 2.0 connection for recording. It can be a little complicated and time consuming since it doesn't have computer interface ability yet, and line6 is putting out a version of Gear box at winter namm. As usual there is a volume problem between patches where they're not all equal.

also has a cd in for headphone practice. xlr outs, to run straight into the sound board. I've been using it as a backup pedalboard for practices and depending on what we're playing I'll plug it into the effects loop of my Tech21.

is it worth the 500 price tag, probably not, but then again it does have the every modelpack for guitar/bass and vocals.

I've a/b d the 808 reissue, the modded 9, the 10, a maxon 808, and the maxon nine. they all pretty much sound close around the board . The maxon 9 sounds thicker and more rounded.... most of the tubescreameresque pedals boost the treble up to cut through the mix when taking solos.

After 24 years of countless different pieces of effects, amps, and guitars. I have became a minimmalist. Dunlop CryBaby Wah, MXR Phase 90, Line 6 Echopark Delay (has tap tempo and I love it), and that is all. For overdrive, I just switch between the amp channels. Now if we happen to change sound guys again, I might have to alter the setup. Some guys want everyone plugged into the board, while some want to mic up your rig (my personal favorite people BTW). Either way, the worship leader put them there, so I have to figure out how to work with them.

So, as of tomorrow or saturday, or sometime next week, I'm gonna be operating on a footswitch...

The little Line 6 75w that I've been using is a great little amp for the tones I want (jack of all trades, master of none, really) and I'm gonna grab the footswitch for it for switching between my pre-set channels.

this should work pretty good for now.

This is my current setup. I use a Peavey Classic 30 and a Marshall DSL401, so I have footswitches for both on the board as well as an A/B switch. It all works pretty well. I also have a Boss GT-8 that works pretty well, but since I got the Marshall I really like it's distortion, so I've decided to use analogs with my amps own tone.
