View Full Version : Jesus's favorite wine?

I figured this might be a kosher topic to discuss since there's a pornography thread in HT...
I'm curious as to what you think Jesus's favorite wine would be? From scripture, it's apparent that Jesus had some good taste in wine. He knew the difference between good wine and bad wine at the wedding of Cana. And he was nice enough to create the good stuff even though the guests were a bit tipsy. In his final moments on the cross, he is offered soured wine (vinegar) with gall and refuses it, but later takes the vinegar on a sponge. Some say that it was infused with both myrrh and gall. Myrhh was sometimes used in food & drink to sweeten it and give it a more pleasant smell. It was also likely Jesus drank kosher wine since He was a Jew. Of course this doesn't really mean much since the winemaking process doesn't usually involve anything that by Jewish law would make it unclean, except during Passover in which they would have to remove the yeast by boiling it. Jesus also called the wine at the last supper, the blood of the new covenant, so it's hard for me to picture it being white wine. I'm thinking it was something along the lines of a fruity red - perhaps a merlot or chianti, mixed with water to dilute it of course. If not for the high alcohol content, I would have gone with port - sweet, dark red, and good.

I feel Jesus was more of a Shiraz fan. With it's ripe and intense color it would be perfect for our Lord and Savior. The Bible lauds the cedars of Lebanon as the mightest of the trees, it's only fitting that shiraz is aged in such barrels for that spicy and cedary oaken flavor. Bold, deep and richly textured. Jesus has taste. Jesus drank... Shiraz *cut to scene with me holding a bottle of shiraz with a debonair grin on my face*
Also the term kosher in wines has to do with the handling of the wine as well...

I'm a big fan of Shiraz myself. My fiance picked out Little Penguin Shiraz just because of the cute little penguin on it. I'm not big on the gimmicky bottles, but this one surprised me.
Yes, Kosher does have to do with the handling as well, but like I said the winemaking process doesn't usually bring it in contact with anything that would make it unclean.
Have you ever tried the The Manischewitz Sweet Concord wine? It's a little too sweet for my tastes, so I dilute it.

I've had Manischewitz blackberry wine. It tasted like koolaid. I'm guess'n the sweet concord is just about the same. i drank a glass of water after each glass of wine... so i basically diluted it. much too sweet.
I'm a riesling man. unfortunately, I think you're right about Jesus being into the red stuff though.

I think 98% of people realize that Jesus drank alcohol, but there are a few who think otherwise. It's possible that some of those 2% are here, but not enough to open a worm can.

Actually, that's what I had as well. It wasn't the sweet concord. That's just what they're better known for (was trying to find the name). And yes, I found myself drinking a glass of water after it as well.

Well I'd say that Jesus likes them all. But I agree that we'd never be able to imagine how good the wine he made at Cana was really.
When I experience the full weight of glory I'm going to ask for a fine fine single malt scotch.

I was a beer drinker never was one for wine or hard liquer but when I did drink liquer I always preferred a screwdriver(vodka and OJ)
My all time favorite beer was a Yuenglings with Sam Adams next. I hate those light sissy beers that taste like water. I loved dark bold lagers

Heh, heh. I'm a lightweight, so one of the few I enjoy is the Manischewitz. I've got the remains of some blackberry in my place. Which is weird, because I generally don't like supersweet things...I drink my coffee black or with just a little cream.

Well, it depends on how good the coffee is. My default is actually half and half or skim milk. But I severely dislike flavored cream.

Let me tell ya, I know! I had like two or three beers one night and then my friend made me some sort of mixed thing involving orange liquor, vodka, and cranberry juice. Then we sat and watched Nightmare Before Christmas. Oh. My. Gosh. Not a good movie to watch when you've been drinking. It was very interesting.

P.S. I will not drink alcohol around friends who have a problem with it or around acquaintances I'm not sure about. I take Paul's words to heart in Corinthians about meat sacrificed to idols. I'm fine with forgoing a good drink for the sake of a brother or sister in Christ.

What merlot was it? I tried Barefoot Merlot a while back and was pretty surprised by it. I mean it's nothing special, but it's pretty cheap and still drinkable. Our Walmart has a couple of really cheap wines by Oak Leaf. Their merlot is the only one worth trying if you're on a budget. The Shiraz was horrible! I had one glass, poured the glass down the drain after two sips, then poured out the rest of the bottle. For $2.50 a bottle, it wasn't much of a waste.

Yeah I found that too. Check out another affordable good merlot by Smoking Loon. Most grocery stores run specials on that, usually ten bucks or less. I actually think this is better than Barefoot as well.
