I don't know if this would be considered a 'Hot topic'; if it isn't...it can be moved.
I was a BIG Nirvana back in the day, and I still am. I kept on listening to thier music after Kurt took his own life. These past 5 years or more, there have been more CD's + Box sets being released of Nirvana music. I just saw a commercial for a Nirvana concert 'Live @ the Redding Festival' being released. Its on both CD and DVD.
Do you feel these CD's and DVD's are just a cash grab???

I think 99% of the music industry is a "cash grab." But in spite of that some good music gets occasionaly produced.
I've always thought a lot of Nirvana's songs were very creative and original. Not in the same league as the Beatles as they've been compared to, but still quite noteworthy. Then some of their songs were garbage. But I enjoyed listening to them, and still do on occasion.

Well, I'd say 50 or 60 % of the music industry is a cash grab. It seems to me, as for as Nirvana goes... Courtney Love owns the right to Kurts music. And every year there is a new CD or box set, or something. Its like she is looking out for herself...
Its the same with 2Pac, every year a *new* CD of unreleased music hits the stores. But there might be reason they were unreleased.

Nirvana was the beginning of "slacker rock"..
Cant sing, dont need to sing....simple basic chords and tones...no guitar solos and simple arrangments. Cant play and dont need to play...just do whatever.
Punk rock meets metal....
Not a fan...

I'm not a fan either... though I do like Pearl Jam... not sure if you'd put Pearl Jam in the same category as Nirvana. What do you all think?

It is simple, but very creative. Just the vocal melodies alone are very unique and original. That is rare for any genre.
Ya know, many of the Beatles' songs only have a few chords as well.
I could teach a complete newb guitarist how to play Hard Day's Night in about an hour.

Most people group Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, Bush, and a few others together.
I like some songs from all those bands, but Nirvana is the most original of the bunch.

Gotcha! Thanks for breaking it down for me. I really like Pearl Jam and STP, and "Black Hole Sun" by Soundgarden. I'm not as familiar with Bush. Nirvana just gives me a headache.. a little too edgy for me.
Isn't this style commonly referred to as Grunge? I've never heard of it as "slacker music", but I feel that label is probably more appropriate! LOL!

Grunge was awesome. You know how every generation has an autlet for their teenage angst? (60's was rock'n roll, 70's were hippies, 80's had hair metal, 90's was grunge, post 2k it's emo). Grunge has to be the best out of all of them. Mostly because you really didn't have to do anything to have a grunge image. No haircut, no leather pants, just wear some wide jeans and a flannel shirt. 60's required greased hair, 70's required a VW van, 80's you needed leather, and post 2k you need to wear makeup and let one side of your hair grow long while keeping the other short. Not to mention the sterylizingly tight jeans you have to wear! Grunge involved no more than just apathy. You didn't even have to shower.

The 2 band were friends with each other - Nirvana & Pearl Jam. Most of thoes Seattle bands played with each other before they hit it big.
But, I don't think both bands put themselves in a box, by calling themselves Grunge or Alternative...
STP, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and so forth.
InYerFoot - I considered myself a BIG grunge fan, but I did take a shower everyday. Maybe its 'cause I'm a Canadian grunge fan... Smells like teen spirit 'eh'... lol

if you don't like Alternative music, that's ok. There is a lot of music I don't like, some Christian music and some Secular.
God created us differently, not all of us like the same thing...
BTW, I love the Beatles to... I hope to get myself the Box set soon...

If we are going to give the Beetles the credit they desirve, they certainly wrote some awesome music... but they also wrote some serious trash.. (number 9, anyone?)
I love 90's rock. I prefer the early Pearl Jam stuff (who had some AWESOME GUITAR SOLOS, See Yellow Ledbedder) STP, Smashing Pumpkins, Chilli Peppers, Matchbox 20, 7 Mary 3, Sister Hazel, Toaddies, Better than Ezra... gosh this list could go on... and on and on...

i know this is getting off topic, but I love talking about music. the Beatles song - Number 9...was not a good song. It was more of a John & Yoko thing. I'm suprised the other members of the band let that song be released as a Beatles song...
By the time they started recording the Let it be record, I think they all knew the Beatles were coming to an end.

Definitely not all Beatles stuff was good. But some of it was amazing. Just like with Nirvana, I think much of their stuff is trash, but some of it is really unique and good stuff.
Yellow ledbetter is my guitar center song of choice. Anytime you visit guitar ceneter you have to jam a bit, and I always play that song. Or at least that's my opening song. lol

When I look back @ the whole Seattle Grunge movement, although short lived, I see Alice in Chains as a grunge band. I know, its not my fault...lol. But that how I see the band.
Who I don't see as a grunge band - Bush. Bush came way after the Alternative movment was long over. Bush was a lame band, trying to sound like Nirvana... Bush was known here in Canada by a different name - Bush X

I disagree. Actually I think Alice in Chains has never gotten the credit they deserves. You say, their sound is different. Really, all of the 90s grunge bands had different sort of sounds. Pearl Jam's first album came out around the same time as Nevermind by Nirvana ( which was not Nirvana's first album, but the first one that brought them national notoriety) and to me they both have completely different sounds, yet they were both lumped together. Actually I thought Soundgarden and Pearl Jam had mouch more comparable sounds. But I am not the music expert that you are, so I can't say much about harmonies etc. but to me what bound these bands together was their raw energy and their refusal to conform to industry standards at the time. Of course, like any breakthrough in popular music once the suits realize that they can make money off of it, then a style that was once fresh and rebellious becomes the industry standard, and thus the breath of fresh air that bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and yes Alice in Chains offered paved the way for poser, flash-in-the pan, bands like Candlebox, Cake, Supersonic, Ned's Atomic Dustbin etc. Actually Alice in Chains' "Man in the Box" was released before Smells like Teen Spirit.
However, I also think the grunge movement in general gets too much credit for ending the "hair-band" era. I don't think any major labels would have even considered the grunge bands had it not been for the popularity of bands like Guns n Roses and Metallica in the late 80s and early 90s, whom I realize were not grunge but metal, but they were definitely not hair bands. They brought a renewed raw energy to the metal scene that had become saturated with poser bands like poison and warrant. This made record execs, radio stations, MTV etc realize that they was a hunger for a more raw, edgy sound thus paving the way fro grunge.

Grunge/Alternative music as a whole, was ment to sound different then the popular music of the time.
I was in my last year of High School when grunge hit. It was more of a whisper here in Northern BC, but then it hit like a tital wave fall of 91. To this day, I still like the music, the style, almost everything about grunge.

I know Nirvana and PJ and other grunge groups all have their unique sounds. But I guess the whole clashing harmonies thing that AinC had just put them in a different category in my mind. But that's just my personal opinion.
I love all styles. (except reggae, lol)
I love Metallica, G&R, and even the poser bands (hairbands pretening to be metal bands) you mentioned. They all have their place in the world.
But AinC just had this unique way of singing clashing harmonies which would normally sound terrible, but they made it sound awesome! I'm not up on my theory so I don't know if it was dissonant chords or what, but it ROCKED!!!

Pearl Jam's position on Ticketmaster was admirable. And putting out beaucoup live shows, being a Deadhead, was interesting too. Just did not listen to much of their music.

You could actually feel the pain that Layne was singing about in his voice and in the music. Layne's raspy voice against cantrells more traditional voice made for an amazing sound. AIC was prob the "hardest" and gloomiest of the grunge bands. But they weren't just the punk / pop that nirvana was. AIC and (more so) Soundgarden played in odd times (not 4/4 or 6/8) and had very complex music and rhythms. Nirvana was catchy and was helped by being the most accessible and MTV's baby. Soundgarden was prob the most rhythmical and complex to play. PJ is prob (i'm a bit biased) the most diverse musically and sonically which caused them to appeal to a lot of people over a long time.

Alice in Chains, early Pearl Jam, early Collective Soul, early CREED, and "Badmotorfinger" CD from Soundgarden were the only grunge bands that I ever liked.
The other grunge bands out there just were either: 1. Not Rock-Worthy at all. 2. Were just in it for the dollar sign. 3. Were just a cheap rip-off of the bands that I just mentioned.
