I should begin by saying that I have seen Third Day in concert every time they have been in the Dallas area since 1999, just before Time came out. I got to hang with the band last night before the show--okay, so it was me and about 200+ other people, still, who's counting when you're in a room with Third Day? Tai asked me if I've seen them in concert before. I replied "every time since 1999 when Time came out." I think what Tai heard was "not since 1999." He laughs and says "well, we've gotten better since then..."
Well, they have, and not just since 1999.
If I could have one word to describe last night's show, it would be "creative." Having seen the band so many times, I've gotten the feeling that their shows have become a bit predictable. Don't get me wrong, predictable does NOT mean bad. On the contrary, they've all been GREAT SHOWS. I just knew what was coming and when. I knew they would probably open with This Is Who I Am or maybe Tunnel. I knew regardless of what they opened with, the second song would probably be Rockstar, although I've Got A Feeling is always a possibility. Back in the day, the second song was always Sky Falls Down...but I digress...
From the very beginning, I knew this was going to be a different experience. If you plan to see the band in one of their two remaining shows of the fall tour, stop reading here. I would want you to experience what I experienced last night...
The band opened with the chorus of Revelation, from behind a giant white sheet, where the lighting revealed their silhouettes. The chorus was in a different key, so that they could easily segue into Otherside. One of the last songs of the usual set is now the opener. As the show progressed, they pulled out Come On Back To Me and Sing A Song. For me, a big treat was when the lights went down, and Mac started to sing Carry My Cross, which after a verse, segued into Thief. One of the most unexpected turns of the evening came when the entire band relocated to an aisle midway to the back of the venue. Mac is now standing about 10 feet from me now, and right in front of a little boy. "What's your name?" Mac asks. The little boy replies, and Mac says "You're seat just got a whole lot better, didn't it?" Funny moment. The band proceeded to play I've Always Loved You, Blackbird, and Creed (acoustic, instead of the usual rock-out towards the end of the show--another cool change). The most unexpected song came towards the end, when all the cool folks from Glory Revealed came out and joined the band for The Devil Went Down To Georgia! I LOVED the fiddle. And, speaking of Glory Revealed, I really love how the band utilized the GR female vocalists for Born Again and Run To You. They really made the songs that much better live. The show ended with Call My Name, then an encore with Tunnel, I've Got A Feeling (incredible audience participation here, BTW), and finally Revelation.
Guys, thank you for what was, IMHO, the greatest show you have ever put together. Tai, I know you are especially passionate about the show, and how it is presented. Dude, you should be dang proud. Of course, I know you guys do it for the glory of the Father. And that just makes it that much better. Well done.
