Are there Christian songs that make you uncomfortable??? Talking (or singing) about the Love of God.
I'll give you an example. Heather Clark wrote a song called - Kisses of your mouth. Kiss me with the Kisses of your mouth, Lord...
I love the Lord and God, with all of my heart. But the thought of Jesus kissing me...

This is a most interesting question, and I will be curious to see the responses from the guys. I have often wondered how men can relate to Jesus as His "bride" since that is feminine. I think to see myself as the bride of God is easier as a female than for someone who is male.
But in response to your specific question about the lyrics you posted, for me as a female, if I sing lyrics like that, I would envision kissing the Lord as an expression of love. Like a Father and Child kissing, not a husband and wife.
jesus loves me

I am extremely uncomfortable with the 'bridal theology' going around out there. Jesus is NOT my boyfriend or husband. Like Mary said she too would think of kissing the Lord out of love as more of a parent/child thing -or for me, as a friend. I believe this kind of thing goes WAAY past what Christ meant when He calls us His bride. As a female, I love our Lord as my God, my Lord, my Savior and my friend. I believe taking it to the other extreme is just plain wrong. I too want to hear what the guys have to say. WE the church are collectively His bride, not individually and not in the same way as a husband and wife on earth. So glad you brought this up, Roger!

I find those lyrics highly disturbing....

Well, the bridal theology is correct. There's a lot more than just that one verse. It's pretty clear.
Not that I am fond of it, though. The song that really can't get into goes like this:
I want to sit at your feet
taste from the cup in your hand
lay against you and breathe
feel your heart beat
this love that I feel
is more than I can stand
I melt in your peace
it's overwhelming
Can't recall the song name, though. I just don't feel too much like laying against Jesus and feeling His heartbeat. I realize John did place his head against Jesus chest at the last supper, but it's just not my thing.

Even Matt Redman songs. I'm a big fan of Mr. Redman, I use to sing a lot of his songs when I was a worship leader. When I came across his song - Let my words be few. I really had to think about the lyrics, and asked myself if I wanted to sing that song. Jesus I am so in love with you. I love Jesus, no doubt. But not really in that way...

Nobody is denying that the bride/groom thing is in the bible, Mike. The question he asked is: does it make you uncomfortable? My answer is yes.

Oh dear, I am afraid I highjacked your thread! My simple mention of the Bride of Christ may have taken things a little off topic! So sorry.
I am certainly no theologian, but I believe that God refers to our relationship with Him in terms of Bride and Husband because it is a covenant relationship, just like an earthly husband and wife enter into a marriage covenant. And it is adultery when the covenant is broken.
But back to the song lyrics, I am sure there are lyrics that are weird for guys, just like certain Bible passages that refer to Christians in female terms. I have always felt that it must be hard for men to relate to some of the Bible passages that refer to a believer in female terms. I hope more guys will jump into the thread and tell us how they feel about songs lyrics such as the ones you mentioned!

One song we sing in church a lot that makes me uncomfortable is I Am a Friend of God. I understand the theology behind it, but it's sung in a way that feels flippant to me, instead of reverent. I think, if we're going to claim to be a friend of God's, we should be in complete awe over that title, not bouncing around church clapping and laughing over it. Does that make sense?

...some songs we sing @ the Church, about being the Bride of Christ. I'm totally ok with that...

Roger, would this song bother you?
You Are Near
In the darkness, I feel Your warm embrace
Your whispers, Lord, they calm my fears
My heart melts within me
Knowing that You are near
CHORUS:
Lord, You are near
I long to feel Your touch
Lord, You are near
I'm thirsting for your love
You are near
Lord, You are near
Through my trials, Lord, I know You are with me
Loving hands so strong, they wipe my tears
Sorrow turns to joy
Knowing that You are near
CHORUS

I was watching a clip of an interview with Matt Redman on this very topic on Tangle.com (it's probably still there). He said he wondered if a man's man (or blokey bloke as he said lol) would be uncomfortable singing "Jesus I am so in love with You."
I don't remember how it ended.
I have wondered about the bride of Christ analogy many times myself. I certainly think it would be easier for a woman to embrace this idea. But I know one thing, if I am uncomfortable it's probably because I don't really understand it. So I'll pray for understanding and take up Mathew 25 again.

Welcome to the evangelical church, where reverence is tossed aside in attempt to make church seem cool and Jesus seem like a hippie.
Back to the original question, I think you should all watch the South Park episode where Cartman starts a christian band, called Faith + 1, and rewrites love songs, trading out words like baby and honey for Jesus. It's high comedy!

"I am a whore, I do confess, I put you on just like a wedding dress, and I walk down the aisle."
Derek Webb
the catholic church is the bride of christ. Jesus is not my husband, so this bastardization of the theology is what bothers me. These songs do not make me uncomfortable because I do not listen to nor sing them.
