Notice, I said "world," not "worldly." ;)
I know we've totally had, like, 2 or 3 other "celtic music" threads, but I want to start another, slightly different music thread, by golly!
I like a lot of world music, but my passion is for the music of the various celtic nations. Here are a few of my favs, so what are yours? (Youtubes highly encouraged.)
Runrig
Capercaillie
Afro Celts
Ofra Haza (not celtic)
Peatbog Faeries...
And that's it for now. Hawkeye Childs had better come out and play.

Blowzabella
<wiki> 'bagpipes, hurdy-gurdies and an array of acoustic instruments to produce an inimitable, driving, drone-based sound influenced by British and European traditional dance music.'
I love the sound of Northumbrian pipes, bagpipes and hurdiy-girdies.
Their music reminds me of old whaling songs and sea shanties with a (sometimes) celtic slant, sometimes eastern european folk music.
From their site - http://www.blowzabella.com/ - a list of members and the instruments they play...
Andy Cutting - diatonic button accordion.
Jo Freya - clarinet, saxophones.
Paul James - bagpipes, saxophones.
Gregory Jolivet - hurdy-gurdy.
David Shepherd - violins.
Barn Stradling - bass guitar.
Jon Swayne - bagpipes, saxophones.
Jo Freya is also a member of the band 'Lush' (along with Kathryn Locke) which is one of my favourite live bands of all time. No one can play their chosen instruments the way they do (well I have never experienced anything like them before).
One of my favourite blowzabella tunes (The Rose of Raby) - not played by the band but played by a competent mazurka player - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1yDyH4U968

Durn! I muted my sound earlier, and now I can't find the icon to unmute it. I love sea shanties, too.
In the meantime, here's a video of one of my favorite capercaillie songs. Also good for awesome 80's hair.

Whilst looking for Blowzabella tracks I came across this one by David Jones (who is playing the pipes on the example I posted above).
Amazing Grace and Scotland the Brave played on the Great Highland Bagpipes.

Be Thou My Vision
Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art.
Thou my best Thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.
Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word;
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father, I Thy true son;
Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.
Be Thou my battle Shield, Sword for the fight;
Be Thou my Dignity, Thou my Delight;
Thou my soul’s Shelter, Thou my high Tower:
Raise Thou me heavenward, O Power of my power.
Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise,
Thou mine Inheritance, now and always:
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,
High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art.
High King of Heaven, my victory won,
May I reach Heaven’s joys, O bright Heaven’s Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.

Success! The sound is fixed. The pipes on the David Jones video have an almost electronic sound to them. I'd actually like to get a chanter to play with, but I think the full set would be a bit much in my apartment!
I really like the Rose of Raby. It has a gypsy feel to it...makes me want to dance.
So, David, do you mostly like trad or do listen to anything progressive?

That's one of my favorite hymns. And the words are right in front of me so I can sing!

I rarely find good bands myself - I have to wait for someone to recommend them to me.
I like traditional music - almost makes me believe in reincarnation - as if I have sat around a fire and heard the songs before.
I like the fusion of different traditions - celtic and african go well. Some western bands take it too far and lose the natural feel of the traditional music, although some of the heavy metal bands when they play 'unplugged' sound very folky.
I have some music by an Irish folk band playing a concert in China and it is uncanny how similar the music of China and Ireland can be when played on violins. I would like to hear some Celtic Chinese folk fusion (know any?)

Yes! Capercaillie, the Afro Celts, and Eileen Ivers are who immediately come to mind. I wish I could find a youtube of Co Ni Mire Rium and Inexile, two of my favs. Have you heard of Kila? They're a mishmash of lots of random sounds. I think there may be a digeridoo in there somewhere too.

KROKE
This is a klezmer band - I saw them live and clapped my hands until they bruised. I have never smiled so much while listening to a live band so much - I am quite a reserved person and I giggled and laughed out loud with joy listening to them. they really enjoy playing their music - I will try to find some of the music they played.

I recall seeing capercaillie many many moons ago - they had a great support band too - I will have to ask my friends if they can remember who it was.
I like digeridoo - when used appropriately - I will have to look out for afro-australio-celt music.

To let everyone know:
During the few years that I wasn't on here, I was finding out about totally ignored, overlooked, under-appreciated, overshadowed, but yet completely AWESOME and super talented bands that hardly anyone knows about.
Bands that I have never once heard of, and really only stuff that you find out about through word of mouth.
Bands that MTV and VH1 will never tell you about, b/c these bands are far superior talented than anything and everything played on MTV and VH1.
Bands that The Media refuses to tell you about, b/c these bands don't fit in the little mold that The Media wants to categorize music into.
These are bands you have to find out on your own.
If you want to hear some first class Progressive Rock/Metal: Check out Symphony X, early Dream-TheateR, and Pagan's Mind for Prog Metal. YES, RUSH, and the Peter Gabriel days of 70's Genesis for Prog Rock.
If you want to hear some first class Epic Power Metal: Check out SkyLark, Virgin Steele, Rhapsody, Blind_GuardiaN, Kamelot, Nightwish, EPICA, Oratory, Black Majesty, Domain, White Skull, early Dark Moor, Vision Divine, Labyrinth, Magic Kingdom, Heavenly, Celesty.
If you want to hear some first class regular Power Metal: Helloween, Gamma-Ray, SonatAArcticA, early EdGuy, AngrA, more recent DIO, and CeLLadoR.
If you want to hear some first class Speed Metal: early Stratovarius, Dungeon, MetaliuM, primaL feaR, DragonForce, early Blind_GuardiaN, the first CD from Helloween, Dinoysus, and Lost Horizon.
If you want to hear some first class Thrash Metal: ICED EARTH, TestAmenT, early EXODUS, Sentenced.
If you want to hear some first class Melodic Death Metal/Brutal Thrash Metal: Arch Enemy, Children of Bodom
If you want to hear some first class early Death Metal: Obiturary, Death.
(Symphony X, and Dream-TheateR are from The U.S.
Pagan's Mind is from Norway.

It is surprising what you can find in an independant record store in the UK.
Problem is, without making a guess, or being recommended something, you do not know what is going to be good or not.

This is Magic Kingdom:
Magic Kingdom = Ignored Symphony Power Metal band from Germany. (This band has a TON of Yngwie J. Malmsteen influence in them. The guitarist in this band plays just like Yngwie, and the guy even sort of looks like Yngwie too).

DragonForce - (you might already know about this band. I am not sure? They are farily well-known, around Metal circles anyways. Awesome Speed Metal band from England).

I had to go up to Delaware (family vacation reasons) to get Helloween - "Helloween EP", Helloween - "Walls of Jericho", Stratovarius - "Visions" CDs.
That is not stuff that you find here in North Carolina.
Also, I had to get SkyLark - "In the Heart of the Princess" greatest hits 2-CD set from Amazon.com for Christmas, and that had to be sent in from Texas.
No place anywhere on the Eastern Seaboard of The U.S. carries that CD set.
Stuff you have to take a plane trip to Italy or Germany to find.
Very rare CDs.

Since every internet radio station I really love tends to crap out on me eventually, I started using Pandora, which is just the bee's knees. Unfortunately, they don't have every obscure band I like, but it's a lot more interesting than listing to one genre of radio at a time.
