It's only a couple of days before the race. Who's it going to be this year and why?

At risk of being set upon I have to say something: NASCAR is immensely BORING! I am an avid motorsport fan: F1, rally, bikes etc. but I cannot stand the NASCARs. All they do is go round and around and around. I have seen some of the coverage on the HD channels here in Auz but would honestly rather peace and quite.

So my question, then, is this; what's the attraction?

While not a big NASCAR fan, I do enjoy attending racing events live. It's a hard to describe adrenaline rush.

I do look forward to watching Daytona in HD with my surround sound turned way up!

As far as Sundays race, I'll be doing just like Dan - the surround sound will be maxed out all day. It's hard to pick a winner; this race is so different from all of the other events because everyone is so dependent upon help from others. A perfect day for me would be a strong top 10 for both entries from Stewart/Haas racing; strong performances by the new - and very small budget - teams from Jeremy Mayfield and Tommy Baldwin/Scott Riggs; A.J. Almendinger to prove that he's worthy of driving a car wearing Petty Blue; and Mark Martin to finally get his Daytona 500 win.

Aussie 3dfan - I'll get back to you later with my thoughts on why NASCAR is so popular......;)

Whoa! Where have you been?! :P I will not be surrounded by sound because I have to work. :D Besides, there is drag racing on tomorrow night. You want an adrenaline rush, go check out 300+ mph race cars in person. :D :D ;) You do know your last sentence is a joke waiting to happen. :D

Speaking of Tony, I thought he had a great run and had a shot at the win had the rain held off. And isn't it funny how there was no penalty handed down to Dale Jr. for dumping Brian Vickers when Jason Leffler got hit with a 5 lap penalty for doing basically the same thing to Steve Wallace in yesterdays Nationwide Series race?

Oh, my - did I just infer that Earnhardt gets special treatment? Shame on me....... :D

Fox said that Junior and Vickers had an accident "because it was Daytona". Did not see the accident in detail but know that Vickers did not mince words about it being Junior's fault.

What about my friend that dvr'd the race only to have it rain out? I think he must be bummed.

Is Toyota still running bigger engines this year than Chevy and Ford? Did I misunderstand last year's changes to Toyota?

Did I misunderstand last year's changes to Toyota?Doriano, I'll take these in reverse order: Toyota has always had to use the same size engine as everyone else (which is a conventional 358 cubic inch pushrod engine with a cast-iron block and a good old fashioned carburetor). However, there are many variables allowed to teams in areas such as carburetor size; cylinder head design; etc. Toyota seemed to have unlocked several secrets about how to get the most bang for the buck in those areas where NASCAR allows teams to make their own engine modifications. A couple of years ago NASCAR felt that Toyota had gained an unfair advantage in horsepower in the Nationwide and Truck series, so they mandated a different manifold to reduce their advantage and level the playing field. But those changes didn't apply to Cup, and I'm not aware of any changes recently made. (Guess I'm off to Google this one.....:D )

Ah, the rain. In terms of not continuing the race NASCAR probably made the right call, because it continued to rain for a couple of hours after they shut everything down. My complaint is that they've pushed back the start time so much in order to accommodate TV (primarily the West coast markets); had they gone with an earlier start time - as they used to do - the race would have been able to go the distance. With 1 out of every 4 races being affected by rain last year, this is an ominous way to kick off 2009.

Regarding Vickers and Junior, opinions seem divided on who was more at fault or if they share equal billing for being knuckleheads. From my view I've got to place most of the blame on Dale Jr.; here's a couple of links to stories (one with video):http://www.thatsracin.com/135/story/3797.html

Rain can be a big problem in racing. The NHRA season opener started on Sunday and finished on Wed. because of rain. A few years ago they got delayed by rain so much someone said NHRA means Next Heavy Rain Area. :D

I do somewhat agree with you. It does seem like Jr gets special treatment! But BV deserved it. I can sense a new rivalry, one that I did not predict (http://nascargirl14.blogspot.com/2009/02/top-rivalries-for-2009.html) in my blog.

However that being said. I think that BOTH men were genuinely sorry and honest when they said they didn't do it intentionally. I've never known Leffy or Jr to be aggresive drivers.

And here's MY opinions on the Daytona 500 09: The Great American Joke (http://nascargirl14.blogspot.com/2009/02/great-american-joke.html).

Didn't Tony finish 9th? If so, that is a good job for a new team.

Nope. 8th. And you're right, Tony exceeded everyone's excpectations but I know Tony's capable of driving a crap car to a top 10 or 5 finish.

But those Petty cars were AMAZING. Look at AJ Allmendinger, he finished a career best of THIRD. Amazing. There were a lot of surprises out there, including a Petty car being in the top 5 once more.

Fox said that Junior and Vickers had an accident "because it was Daytona". Did not see the accident in detail but know that Vickers did not mince words about it being Junior's fault.

The accident was 100% Jr's fault. I'll tell you why.

He was racing Vickers to be the first car a lap down WAY too early on in the run. Jr had gone down low, but he was below the yellow line *what lost Regan his Dega win and gave it to Tony- another stupid race* so when Jr tried to pop back UP, Vickers couldn't go anywhere. There were some bumps and scrapes and Jr kept pushing Vickers into a spot where he just couldn't fit and Vickers lost control.

Jr was just too desperate. Even my best friend, a HUGE Dale Jr fan, understands that the whole thing was his fault. He was just being stupid and acted like a total rookie. Then Brian went and said that he took him out intentionally which was not the case. Jr was pretty peeved, and anyone can understand why after BV's notorious Talladega win, at Brian because he runs his mouth.

Don't get me wrong, I like BV, he's really cool and I've talked to him in the past. But sometimes he needs to quit running his mouth.

I always run my mouth when it comes to NASCAR hahaha. I just think BV should have watched the replay before he ran his mouth like he did.

Maybe. He did win one of the duels *which pissed me off a lot, no offense* but when it comes to races like the 500, the 400, or the N'Wide races, he hasn't got it down yet. To be there at the end there's a few things he needs to learn about the draft. Other than that he tends to run pretty well for like 100 laps then he loses it.
