I've been up for a while and have been watching parts of Barack Obama's inaugauration. I saw part of his speech, which was impressive. Will see the transcript in the paper, I'm sure. This is the first time Australia has telecast much of the inaugauration of a President, so it is viewed as a significant event here. Glad to see the luncheon menu has improved since 1953, too. :P

What!? There's a new American President! I hadn't noticed.
He has a very challenging road ahead. He is being expected to fix the economy, manage two wars, fix America's image, and keep everyone happy at the same time. If he does it, he'll be hailed a hero and everyone will love him, if not, even his charisma won't save him.

I don't know... Americans are gracious in general. Besides, even according to Obama's speech, the fault is on the people of America:
"Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age."
(Isn't that about as nebulous as can be?)
Anyway, I don't see too many Americans playing the blame game now, and there is always a long honeymoon period for any newly elected leader in the USA.

Not all Americans.
I believe in the US Constitution & everything it stands for. I'm a believer in capitalism. I believe that the people should work hard for the good of man & not sit around & wait for the next government handout.
Obama will most certainly make a difference in America. In 20 years, you won't even recognize her.

I thought Obama's speech was very gracious and very promising for the future. And I found the quote have you have posted especially insightful and accurate. Many people blame the previous adminstration for the terrible state the US economy is in (and in some respects that a fair point) but one of the cheif causes of the current US recession was people buying stuff they couldn't afford. To borrow a phrase: their eyes were to big for their stomach. To make matters worse, the big banks kept giving money to these people who couldn't pay it back. And now the world economy is being screwed because of it.
Barrack Obama is a good man, and I genuinly believe things will improve if the right decisions are made by both his administration and the American people. It is your responsibility as well. Good luck. You're gonna need it... :D

Obama's speech was very good and I liked the content of it. The thing I hope Obama can do more than anything is encourage each american to make a difference. I know HE wants to make a difference, but until he can get each person to want to make a difference, nothing will change. I sincerely hope he can inspire people to want to change, regardless of how long he's president (1 or 2 terms).

I agree. Much of the problem in America is people buying what they can't afford... the live for today mentality. This, combined with overzealous banks who lent to just about anyone caused the current banking crisis.
It feels as if we finally have a president who cares. I genuinely feel as if he really wants to make a difference. He really wants to succeed. I personally never felt that way with Bush. I felt Bush took the job more out of duty, than desire.

Many loans to unqualified borrowers were made because "community organization groups" strong-armed them with discrimination lawsuits. Don't forget the people who were in charge of Freddie and Fanny. Don't forget that GW Bush (the fiscal liberal) spent us into a recession that was compounded by unethical and criminal practices at Fanny and Freddie push and approved by liberals.
Please pray for us in the USA the sky is not falling but bigger govt is not the way to go. Read your Constitution and demand your public servants KEEP THEIR OATH TO DEFEND AND UPHOLD IT!!!!

Banks are not required to lend downstream. Banks all wanted a piece of the pie... there was record profits to be had.. and most banks wanted some of that action. There's a big difference between banks loosening lending standards and community organization groups strongarming banks, which is what you said. I work in Banking regulation, and what you previously stated just did not happen.

Yep. America and Americans need change. Especially at a time like this America needs a change of image; and a fresh start. With two ongoing wars continuing to drain both the failing US economy and the nations pateince the nation needs a new set of clothes. And then of course there's the conomy. Having such an inspirational and passionate leader at this time is just what America needs to unite it under one banner. As you say, I genuinly believe Obama wants to succeed (he has to), and I genuinly believe he will.

JL, you are right the recession and the subprime mortgage crisis is Bush's fault. His pathetic attemp to create a legacy in saying under his administration there became more first-time homebuyers has failed and also left us not only with more first-time home buyers but more first-time foreclosures.
There I mean what I just said and I also still posit that there was corruption at Freddie and Fanny and greedy banks and mortgage houses as well.
That being said do you think the Govt. should abide by the US Constitution?

I think capitalism is scary when out of control... when people consider it their right to have what they want when they want... we were talking about hire purchase (time payment) the other day and how we are both very grateful to our parents and the way they trained us - Kevin's parents pay cash for everything which can be a bit tricky as they don't have a great bank record but they've never gotten into financial trouble, ever...my parents would only ever have one hire purchase at a time and never ever got into trouble either!
We operate a VISA card as we need it and tend to keep the balance very low - we have quite a high limit but have never been anywhere near it - thank you Mum and Dad and Mum and Dad...

While a certain amount of blame can certainly be laid on the previous administration, it is both unfair and inredibly ignorant to say it's all "Bush's fault." For a start, this problem arose because the American people kept taking out loans for houses they couldn't afford. Secondly, the big banks kept giving money to these people and got snapped in the backside because of it. And thirdly, very few people actually did anything when it was needed. America is quite simply in a hole of it's own digging.

US Population in 1981 229,465,714 Reagan Inauguration viewers 41,800,260 = 18.2%
US Population in 2009 305,529,237 Obama Inauguration viewers 37,793,008 = 12.4%
One thing to consider is that President Obama's inauguration was more thoroughly covered than was President Reagan's. So I don't know how Neilson's ratings worked in either case.
I do think that it is not so much a commentary on Mr. Ronald Wilson Reagan versus Mr. Barack Hussein Obama but more a commentary on the apathy in Americans here in 2009. Also check out this map of election results by counties in the US.

Yes, I totally agree. I seriously doubt there were less viewers. People in my neighborhood had house parties where people got together to watch. At work, conference rooms were reserved with hundreds in them. So many people I know were really into watching history being made Tuesday.

Here's what the local paper showed as viewing numbers for the inauguration on Tuesday...
Snowed in, Triangle tuned in
What do you get when 6 inches of snow collides with a historic presidential inauguration? Eye-popping television ratings in the Triangle.
Nielsen numbers show that more than 51 percent of the households in the Raleigh-Durham TV market were tuned in for the daylong festivities -- the highest concentration in the nation and a higher percentage than even in President Barack Obama's hometown of Chicago.
For the nation as a whole, just under 30 percent of households watched the inauguration.
Local stations were thrilled with the "Snowbama effect."
John Idler, general manger of WTVD, said the ABC station's numbers -- 15.9 percent of households -- were higher than expected. He attributed that to the fact that people had "more time to watch." WRAL had the highest rating in the market -- 17.9 percent -- during the noon to 12:15 p.m. period when Obama took the oath. (A ratings point equals about 10,800 homes.)
Steve Hammel, general manager of the CBS affiliate, said such viewership is higher than on most Super Bowl Sundays.
"Snowbama". Heh. :P

Amen and amen. Whether we agree with his policies, the man has been divinely appointed to serve his country. It's a monumental task and office. The minimum the Church can do is pray that he will be able to execute that office in accordance God's wisdom and will. The fact that he's failing at it a week in already doesn't excuse the kind of vitriol coming from the mouths of Christians. There is a right and a wrong way to go about change, just as there is a right and wrong way to support the president. Supporting him doesn't mean agreeing with everything he does - but praying for him is not optional.

So since assuming office Obama has overturned the Mexico City policy, in which I am robbed at gun point, for my hard earned money to pay for the slaughter of defenseless babies in the world.
He has also expressed interest in passing a law which would essentially make abortion the law of the land, overturning the earlier Prior Birth Abortion ban...
