I figured this was going to be an off-season with quite a few firings. The writing on the wall was was there for Romeo Crenell, weeks ago. Nobody can be surprised at Rod Marinelli being fired after going 0-16. And I think there will be few more; probably Jim Haslett in St Louis, Herm Edwards in KC, probably Tom Cable in Oakland (although with Al Davis, who knows). Heck after the drubbing the Cowboys took yesterday I wouldn't have been surrpised to wake up and find out that Wade Phillips was out. But the fring of Eric Mangini was one I did not see coming. Something tells me, he gets a shot somewhere else.
IMO, not a good call for the Jets.

Everyone in NY saw this coming like a runaway train from miles away. The Jets collapse has sealed his fate, and he was fired.

As crazy as it sounds, there are actually quite a few people (players, press, et al.) publicly pushing (http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/sports/columnists.nsf/bryanburwell/story/234E0FE437EB99DB8625752E0 013DF2E?OpenDocument) for Haslett to be rehired in St. Louis. Others find the idea laughable (http://www.stltoday.com/blogzone/bernies-extra-points/bernies-extra-points/2008/12/five-minutes-for-blogging-dec-29/); a poll on the stltoday.com website shows 38% of fans in favor of keeping him, so he's not terribly popular outside the locker room.

Interesting article. For all the mistakes he may have made I still think he gets another shot, maybe not right away. I could see Marty Schottenheimer going to Celeveland and bringing his son Brian along to be his offensive coordinator and Mangini to be his defensive coordinator.

Apparently The Cleveland Browns are interested:
CLEVELAND (AP) - The Cleveland Browns have scheduled an interview Tuesday with fired New York Jets coach Eric Mangini, a person with knowledge of the meeting told The Associated Press. Mangini, dismissed Monday by the Jets after they collapsed down the stretch and missed the playoffs, will meet with Browns owner Randy Lerner in the New York area, said the person who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the interview.
Lerner has set up an interview for Wednesday with Scott Pioli, New England's vice president of player personnel, the person said.
Lerner also received permission to interview Atlanta president Rich McKay. Falcons owner Arthur Blank granted the request as his team prepares for a wild-card game on Saturday.
"Rich has had some casual conversations — I don't think with Randy, but with someone else in their organization — but there have been no discussions on a face-to-face basis," Blank told the AP. "We think Rich is an important part of the success of the franchise. He's responsible for all the business side of our operations, helps (GM) Thomas (Dimitroff) tremendously with the salary cap and all of the (contract) negotiations, and he's responsible for helping us as we go on a journey for a new stadium and a whole variety of other things.
"We're hopeful Rich will stay in Atlanta and we certainly believe that, but on the other hand, we have to let the process take its course."
Lerner wants to interview as many candidates as quickly as possible because he's competing with several other teams.
Pioli and Mangini both began their NFL careers in Cleveland under coach Bill Belichick and spent several seasons together with the Patriots.
Mangini, who started out as a public relations assistant with the Browns in 1994, went 23-26 in three seasons and made the playoffs once with the Jets. However, after starting the season 8-3, the Jets lost to Denver, San Francisco, Seattle and Miami in the last five weeks, costing Mangini his job.
The Browns are in complete rebuilding mode after coach Romeo Crennel and general manager Phil Savage were fired following a 4-12 season that began with playoff expectations coming off a 10-win season in 2007.

Wow!! That's one that I definitely did not see coming. I think he definitely gets another shot. If he wants one. He may choose to take some time off.

But Cowher is not interested in the Jets, or at least he is not interested in returning to coaching next year.

Yeah this was a shocker. Probably a longshot, but with Herm presumably on his way out in KC wouldn't it be interesting if he ended up there?

If we're gonna grab a guy who's a former head coach other than Cowher, I'd rather see us get a Brian Billick or Steve Mariucci. Bowlen and Shanahan are also both supposed to hold a press conference tomorrow morning; I'll add details as time allows.
Speculation is that Bowlen won't pick a new head coach until after he first settles on a new GM. (Shanahan wore both hats). Another issue is that Shanahan is still owed about $20 million for the rest of his contract; unless he takes another coaching gig where some of that cash can be absorbed it's gonna tie Bowlens hands in paying top money.
Everyone around here was stunned by todays firing. Yikes.....

I'd also love to see us get Spagnoulo from the G-men; Lord knows our defense needs the help. No no. I meant the other way around, Shanahan going to KC. I like Herm also, but after tow basically failed tenures in New York and KC I don't see anyone lining up to sign him, if he gets fired.

Cowher is not a candidate per this story, but he had expressed interest in the job:

That assessment of showing interest sounds like the speculation of someone with the Jets. Adam Schefter, who apparently had spoken with some of Cowher's representatives if not Cowher himself, reported yesterday that the only "interest" that he had shown was that he was willing to show the Jets the courtesy of listening to what they had to say. I'd also heard that Boomer Esiason, who Cowher works with at CBS, was urging Cowher to interview with the Jets. It sounds like maybe he agreed to take the interview when they asked him, as a favor to Boomer and then the Jets representatives started reporting it as Cowher pro-actively showing interest and maybe that irked him and turned down the interview.
He does seem pretty insistent on waiting another year but there has to be the thought in the back of his mind of "Are the same kind of openings gonna be there next year?" I would have to think that the Denver position would seem pretty appealing to him. There is a good group of core players, at least on offense. They are a good, stable organization with good ownership and an incredibly loyal fan-base. This type of position does not open up every year. I would think if any opening is going to get him to change his plans then it would be Denver.

I would think if any opening is going to get him to change his plans then it would be Denver.I'd tend to agree (and also admit that as a Bronco fan living in Denver I'm influenced somewhat by my environment). Two of the things that Cowher has reportedly stated are important to him are the ability to bring in some of his own personnel and having a good young quarterback. We've definitely got the QB in Cutler; if the money is there to lure Cowher in I also can't imagine Bowlen not giving Cowher pretty much a green light to bring in whoever he wants for his staff and allowing him to have as much control over the football operation as he feels he needs.
The money is the key issue, because right now the only way the Broncos can get out of paying off Shanahan is if Mike takes another gig as a head coach. And since he's arguably the best available candidate right now (with the possible exception of Cowher) I can't imagine him not being offered several different jobs.
Oh, yeah - Steve, I hear you on Shanny and KC. That might actually make sense, because he's finishing up the construction of his dream house here in the Denver area and KC's only about 10 hours away by car; their fan base is even crazier than ours; and he'd stay in a division where he knows everyone elses strengths and weaknesses. Hmmmmm.......

Browns have hired Mangini:
CLEVELAND (AP) - Eric Mangini is starting over where he started out.
Mangini, who began his NFL career as a ballboy for the Browns, was introduced as Cleveland's 12th full-time coach on Thursday, less than two weeks after he was fired by the New York Jets.
The 37-year-old Mangini signed a four-year deal with the Browns, who are rebuilding once again following a 4-12 season that ended with the firings of coach Romeo Crennel and general manager Phil Savage.
The hiring was first reported by FOXSports.com's Jay Glazer on Wednesday.
Browns owner Randy Lerner hasn't decided on a GM yet, but the frontrunner is George Kokinis, Baltimore's director of player personnel and a longtime friend of Mangini's. Kokinis is scheduled to interview on Friday.

What about Boston College's Jeff Jagodzinski being fired for interviewing with the New York Jets?
He knew the line in the sand and he crossed. He can work anywhere he wants but he also has rules in his current job that he cannot break.
They do this in my industry so I have no problem with it in the NCAA.

Okay, y'all......The letter "M" is just two keys to the right of the letter "B". It's an honest mistake caused by the combination of fatigue, fat fingers, small keyboards, and bad eyes.
So nice to have friends who are willing to help out a brother in need - especially if they can also get a laugh at his expense.........:D :D

That reminds me of a joke by a married couple I know from church. The husband called his wife "Mitch" once, and her response was "My name starts with a 'B'." (He wasn't seriously insulting her; it was all good natured.)
