It came over the wire today (no pun intended), that former Toronto Maple Leaf Captain Mats Sundin...signed a 1 year contract with the Vancouver Canucks. The only other team that wanted to sign him was the NY Rangers, but couldn't work out a deal.

Mats is set to be in Vancouver after Christmas. And being a Canuck myself, I welcome him.

Wire? I don't get it. Plus why did not one want him?

When will we know when his first game as a Canuck will be? Thrashers fans are excited with the prospect of it being against the Thrash...(ya, that makes sense....we want to play Sundin, cause that worked so well playing the Leafs, right?) apparently it will be good publicity for the boys of blueland.

3 teams were talking to Sundin, but the NY Rangers couldn't work out a deal. And his old team, the Toronto Maple Leafs...he wasn't gonna go back to them.

I think its a good fit for the Vancouver Canucks, its a 1 year deal. And the Canucks have enough $$$ to sign another big name player if they want to.

PS- Wire was a reference to 3D's Wire CD... lol

Well, I'm glad the Red Wings didn't get him...they haven't had the best of luck with those washed up Maple Leafs. ;)

Naaaaa, I don't think the Red Wings have enough 'cap' space to sign Sundin. And they weren't even in talks with him...

Oh be nice to the Leafs! :(

some of the Thrashers fans are excited with the prospect of Mats' first game as a Canuck being against us.... all just talk as of last time I checked, but it doesn't make sense to me... we didn't do all that well against him when he played with the Leafs (although if the Thrashers have to lose, it's best against the Leafa, cause then atleast one of my teams wins)

...actually wondering how well Mats will do in a Canucks uniform. He hasn't played in half a year, and no one seems to know when he will play again. I hope upon hope he does well...

Yea, for most teams, its better to build on a good young team. For example, the Pens. They built a team around S. Crosby, and it worked out well for them.

As for my Canucks, we do have a great core of young players. We just need a leader in the locker room, now we have a leader - Mats. I know teams in the west (Calgary, Edmonton) are not happy we got him... but a lot of Canucks fans are happy.

They keep telling us that they are building a "younger team around Kovalchuk" and then they sign Schneider...and resign Moose (Who I love to death) who are two vets who really aren't getting all that much better.

Totally get where you are coming from with the leadership thing... we were all calling Kovy for captain last season, this season, we have no captain (really, no one wearing the C, and it would appear no one is really stepping up, Kozlov maybe?)

If I were a Calgary fan, and not so darn set on the Thrashers NEEDING to be younger, I would be happy...

ah, see there's where I disagree.... let's try Go Leafs Go!

I can't be nice to the Leafs...I took too much crap from my boss when they beat the Wings in the Opener. :P

I was very happy about that...I didn't mind the Wings till they signed Marian Hossa...

edited to add:

Found this on a Thrashers board:
let the announcer trouble begin:
"Sundin passes it to Sedin, who passes it to Sedin, who gives it back to Sundin..."

Being a Canucks fan, I get a lot of flack. Most people in my family are Leafs fans. And for years and years I got it good from them when they Canucks were not doing good.

Now, we Canucks took away the Leafs best player - Mats Sundin. Now we can rejoice here in CanuckLand!!!

I know! Both teams played very well...both goalies put on a good show too... Kari (he's my favorite...don't mess with the weasel!) put it best though when he said it's only one game and we still have a way to go.

I think my three stars have to go to Kovy, Joey's Crabb shack, and EC
