As we know, debates on political issues can get very heated. It doesn't have to be that way if people make an effort to debate civilly.
Here's a good article on how to have a civil political debate:

Key points:
* Just because someone disagrees with you doesn't make him or her an idiot
* Try your best to see the other side
* Ask questions that will help you understand the other viewpoint rather than questions like "How in the world could you think that?"
* Consume media from both sides
* Concede a point when appropriate
* Find common ground
* Don't use inflammatory language such as "McCain is a philandering, lying corpse of a man!"
* Stick to the facts
