Hey team, as a new zealander i have a question for all my american friends , what is more american pumpkin pie or apple pie ? I am looking forward to all the answers , this question is being asked because on breakfast television they were debating this, so i am really interested to hear what americans think about this . as a new zealander i think that both pumpkin and apple pies are equally american .

I'd say apple is probably viewed as being more American.

As much as I love apple pie, pumpkin is my favorite. I've been craving some lately. This is the time of year when everyone should eat lots and lots of pumpkin pie. :D

Apple is more American.

Pumpkin is seasonal, October through December.

Apple pie and a seriously sharp cheddar. Blackberry cobbler fresh out the oven with the best vanilla ice cream you can get your hands on. Sweet potato pie with real whipped cream (not that calf slobber out of a can) and a light dusting of freshly ground nutmeg. Pumpkin -- eh, not so much. Can you tell I'm a foodie? And I really like pie. Goes good with coffee.

My own two cent's worth - pumpkin pie originated with the "Native Americans" who were here before there was an america. They ate a pumpkin custard that later evolved into the pumpkin pie we know and most of us like today. So, from that standpoint, it has been around longer.

Ask any school child who Johnny Appleseed was, and he/she will tell you about how he went around spreading apple seeds across the northern tier of states. Apple pie, however, was not an american invention. All the way back in the days of Chaucer (he came a bit before Shakespere), there were recipes for "apple tarts" available. The Dutch also had a similar dish, and recipes for that go back to the 1600's. The Germans had their own version as well, the "apfelkuchen" which features rings of sliced apples over a pastry crust. So, apple pie is NOT of american origin.

Good question . . .

for the rest of this month Pumpkin pie, then back to apple pie after thanksgiving.

This works because my wife found a pumpkin desert(cake) which reminds me of pumpkin pie but works great for family get togethers.

No cheese. No ice cream. Just lots of pie!

I put cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, ginger and tumeric into my pie, making it very "warm" even if it cools off. The biggest problem when I make pie is that it almost never gets a chance to cool completely. It usually gets devoured before it gets a chance to cool. That's why I made two tonight, but DON'T tell my hubby!

Mmm. Don't worry. He won't know. I'm sure we'll all be happy to get it out of the way before he has a chance to know. :P

I didn't know the exact origins, but I was pretty sure that apple pie didn't originate here. People just have this idea in their heads that it's really American. Like baseball.

Well, he knows I made one, but he doesn't know I made two. We can sit out on the front porch, listen to Downhere (or Third Day - depends on who shows up!) and eat our pie and you can have cheese or homemade vanilla ice cream to go with it. Forget about the election!

We actually don't do a lot of apple pie here, when we do apple anything, it's usually a cobbler of some sort.

This time of year, it's either pumpkin pie, or my preference, mincemeat pie. Yum!

Other times of the year, we usually get some sort of variation on chocolate creme or an occasional cheesecake, or during the warmer months, either key lime or lemon meringue.

Edwards frozen pie by the slice pies are really good, they come packaged in pairs of two, just right for two of us to have pie on the weekend, without any leftovers to botch up the rest of the week.

Just took them out of the oven. I put one out on the back porch, so the hubby doesn't attack it! I'm letting mine cool just a little - I hate it when I burn my mouth!

Sounds like an excellent idea! Ice cream for me. And I can totally get down to some Third Day. I talk about downhere a lot (and think about them a lot, honestly), but I became a member of this board for a reason.

I'm a bigger fan of pumpkin pie...in fact, I made two this past Saturday for Thanksgiving that I stuck in the freezer (in those nifty new ZipLock vacuum seal bags...they are awesome!). I used a Paula Deen recipe, so they are guaranteed to be good. :D

I'm not as big a fan of apple pie...but Mrs. Baird's apple fried pies (warmed in the microwave)... I can be all about those.

As far as perception goes, I think apple and pumpkin pies tie for being most American.

Loads of berries and dumplings in between the crusts, a generous dustingn of sugar and cinnamon on top, and finish up with a premium high milkfat vanilla ice cream. Worth wrecking your blood sugar over.

Aah, the other definition of Gomer: Get Out of My Emergency Room. Something usually said of frequent fliers. Actually, I got offn the hospital treadmill years ago. Now I do homecare for special needs medically fragile children. Currently trying to keep my little patient from completely disrobing. He wakes up in the wee hours and gets bored. Got a cup of coffee here that needs some pie real bad.

Me too. Last year I was in the throes of depressive anxiety disorder. It was horrible. This year I'm in a much better place in my head. I'd love a big, gooey pecan pie, but I can't eat it. It totally shreds my blood sugar.
